SUMMER HOLIDAY
   HOMEWORK
           GRADE -V
                           EXPEDITION
Theme: “Grow, Observe, Share – My Plant Journey”
Hello Young Scientists and Nature Lovers!
This summer, YOU are going to become a plant parent, a careful observer, and
a confident presenter!
Your mission? To grow a plant, observe how it changes, and then share its story with
your class.
What You Have to Do:
Step 1: Choose a Plant to Grow
Pick any small plant or shrub: a seed, cutting, or baby sapling.
Use a recycled pot, tin, or bottle if you like for growing the plant/ sapling/ seed in.
Some easy to grow plants are: coriander, fenugreek (methi), mustard, beans, tulsi, or
money plant.
Step 2: Observe and Record
Keep a Plant Journal for 10–15 days.
Every 2 days, record:
•Date
•Plant Height (use a ruler!)
•Changes in leaves, colour, shape, etc. (you can draw and colour the image also)
•Watering details (how much water was the plant given- 5 drops, 10 ml, 250 ml, etc)
•Notes or questions you have
You can draw, write, or stick photos too!
Date Day No. Plant Height Changes I Water Given My Notes or
                                                                  (Yes/No &
                               (cm) Observed Amount) Questions
May 8 Day 1 5 cm Two tiny Yes – 1 The leaves
leaves small mug are soft and
                                                appeared light green.
Step 3: Get Ready for Your Class Exhibition!
When you return to school:
Bring your plant in its pot (surely it would have grown by then)
Bring your decorated Plant Journal
Prepare a 1-minute talk about your plant:
Use this guide:
Hello! I’m [Your Name], and this is my plant, [Plant Name].
I grew it for [number] days during the summer break.
I observed that...
One amazing thing I discovered was...
Thank you for listening!
Green Explorer’s Challenge Checklist
After completing this task, do a self check using this checklist.
☐ I grew and cared for a plant — choosing the best spot, water schedule, and checking
for changes every few days
☐ I recorded my plant’s journey — with drawings, measurements, interesting facts, and
personal thoughts in my journal
☐ I named my plant and described its “personality” — Is it adventurous, sleepy, dramatic,
or cheerful?
☐ I wrote or drew my plant’s story — a day in its life, a comic, or even a plant poem!
☐ I prepared to share my plant’s adventure with the class — using a model, journal, or
creative show-and-tell
☐ I walked the extra mile: I created a Plant Profile Card — with its name, favourite
conditions, and fun facts to help others care for the same kind of plant
☐ Demonstrate Exceptional Initiative: I invented a Superpower for my plant — and
explained how it helps nature or the planet.
We can’t wait to meet your green companion and explore your growing adventure!
Together, let’s build a jungle of stories, science, and plant-powered imagination!
— Your Expedition Teacher
Note: Sharing with you three methods to make your plant journal and not buy a new diary
or notebook from the market!
Materials Needed:
A4 or letter-sized paper (6–8 sheets)
Pens, markers, and stickers for decoration
Optional: Scissors (if you want to make creative flaps)
Step-by-Step Folding Instructions
1. Choose Your Pages
Pick 6–8 sheets of paper for your journal. You can use blank sheets or printed pages with
plant-related prompts.
2. Fold Each Sheet in Half (Like a Book)
Take one sheet and fold it in half widthwise.
Repeat for each sheet you plan to use.
3. Stack the Pages Together
Place all folded sheets inside each other so they nest together like a booklet.
Align the edges neatly.
4. Secure the Pages Using a Folding Method
Option 1: Tuck & Fold
Take an extra sheet, fold it in half, and slide the pages inside the fold.
This acts as a natural “binding” without glue or staples.
Option 2: Accordion Fold
Fold all sheets together in an accordion style (zigzag fold).
The folds create sections for different plant topics.
Option 3: Slot Method (For a More Durable Journal)
Cut a small slit in the centerfold of each page.
Slide the pages into each other using the slits to lock them together.
5. Create Pockets (Optional)
Fold small rectangles and glue only the sides to make pockets for keeping dried leaves or
small notes.
Have fun!

Sample 2.
 Writing Prompt 1.
I am thrilled that May is finally here! Now I can enjoy what I call “the sweet taste of
summer”! Watermelons are in the stores, and I plan to eat one every day for the next
three months. I think watermelons taste better than any other fruit. Peaches, plums,
and strawberries are also great in the summer. I enjoy eating those, too. But they just
don’t taste as good to me as a sweet, sweet watermelon.
Writing Prompt 2.
Sustainable development is an important concept for our future and the health of our
planet. It refers to idea of finding solutions that meet the needs of the present
generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own
needs. Oslo, Norway, and Copenhagen, Denmark, are often cited as leading examples of
highly sustainable cities.
Oslo is praised for its green spaces, using renewable energy, and ambitious goals to
achieve nearly zero emissions. Copenhagen is renowned for its cycling culture, and
sustainable urban planning.
