❖ Lien and her brother, Braam, live

with their mother, Christien, in a
flat in Pretoria.

Inleiding ❖ The household is extremely dysfunctional.

➢Dad is in jail for committing fraud.
➢Their mother, who could not handle the situation at all, seeks refuge in alcohol. As an
alcoholic she is unable to take care of her two children and on top of that she loses her
job. Not only is she emotionally absent, she does not earn money to take care of their
physical needs.

 Inleiding ❖ Lien initially works in a coffee shop and later in a hair salon, but when she can
no longer work there, the situation worsens and the family can no longer survive
without an income.

❖ Lien decided to disguise herself and to go beg for money in another

neighbourhood.

Miemie, each have their own
problems, but they support her
emotionally.

❖ Tannie Bets, who lives in the same apartment building as Lien, helps the children
