GELUKKIG
● Lien hears her mother pouring
wine into a glass “klink” – she
knows the ritual.

● Fridge door opens – “tjorrr” (pouring wine into glass) – fridge door closes.
● Freezer door opens, ice try cracks “ploinks” – puts two ice blocks in the wine –
freezer door closes.
● Silence, sip, pleasant sigh..

● Lien looks at Braam but he doesn’t look at her he just puts the television louder.

● Lien smells the scrambled eggs and toast burning. She should probably go help
but she doesn’t want to.

● A dull voice from the kitchen
GELUKKIG
calls out that the food is ready.

● Braam gets up. Lien knows by

now he is already starving and
she follows slowly.

● The pan with scrambled eggs is in the middle of the table. Next to it is a pile of
half-burnt toast and an opened tin of baked beans that they only ate half of last
night.

● Their mother leans with her nose against the window and stares at the lights at the
bottom of the valley that they can hardly see through the apartment’s kitchen
window.

● GELUKKIG
Her mom (now drunk) sighs
happily and asks “don’t we
have a wonderful view?”

● There’s a violin concert playing very loudly over the CD player in the corner.
Lien turns the volume down. Her appetite now completely gone.

● In the fridge, the wine box is the centrepiece. A piece of cheese, two
Tupperware bowls with something unknown in them, three tomatoes, a half-
empty Rama-container and a bag of milk – total content of the fridge.

GELUKKIG
Her mom pours herself another
glass. Klink, tjorr, kraak,
ploinks and sigh. She came to
stand with them, glass in one
hand.

● She touches Braam’s black curly hair and giggles as she said that every day he
looks more and more like Josh Groban.

● While Braam was chewing, he pulls his head away and told his mother to go to
sleep (without looking at her).

● His mom (her feelings now “hurt”) turns around and walks “feel-feel” against the

passage walls to her room.

● Lien asks her mom if she’s not
GELUKKIG
going to eat, but her mom does
not answer her. Lien knows
she won’t eat – she hardly ever
eats.

● Lien thinks of Braam’s school trousers and how he has been holding the hem
together with staples for the past week. There is no way that her mom will put a
hem in tonight.

● GELUKKIG
Braam leans back on the
couch and puts the television
louder. Her mom is already
sleeping (snoring), across the
bed, with clothes and all.

● Lien sighs and looks for the sewing kit at the bottom of her mom’s built-in
cupboard. She turns the light off and closes the door. Her mom will probably not go
to work again

● Lien takes the pants to her bedroom and closes the door. She puts Norah Jones’s
CD in her Walkman and puts the headphones on.

● GELUKKIG
There is no grey thread so she
uses a blue colour. She
struggles to get the thread into
the needle and pricks her finger

● Lien looks up and tells him in

the mirror that she hates him.
She says it more than once. The
second time she said it slower
placing emphasis on each word.

● She gets a fright when she sees her face in the mirror. Her long dark hair is messy and her
eyes are big and black. She asks herself if this is what hatred looks like?

● Norah’s lyrics mocks her – Lien sticks her tongue out at Norah.

(Haar ma is nie ALTYD DRONK NIE!)
2. n Ritueel is iets wat gereeld/baie gebeur – Lien se ma drink so gereeld/baie

haar gelukkig. Lien daarenteen is ongelukkig oor haar omstandighede. Sy
voel alleen in die gemors waarin hulle is.
