OUR CASUARINA TREE
- Toru Dutt
“Our Casuarina Tree” was written by Toru Dutt. She loved the land of her
birth. She wrote both in English and French. “Our Casuarina Tree” is the most well-
known poem of Toru Dutt.
A creeper has wound itself around the trunk of the Casuarina tree like a python.
The creeper has left deep marks on the trunk. The tree is strong and brave so it can
survive the strong withhold of the creeper. Only a few trees can survive the strong
hold of the creeper. The tree is compared to a giant because of its huge size. The
Casuarina tree is covered with red crimson flowers. It looks like a scarf. The garden
echoes the song of a singing bird at night.
The poet is delighted to see the tree at dawn. A grey baboon is sitting on top of
the tree with its younger one in winter. The baboon is watching the sunrise. Its
younger one is playing here and there. The Kokilas praise the day by its sweet songs.
The sleepy cows stroll to their pastures. The shadow of the tree falls on the nearby
broad tank.
The Casuarina tree is dearer to the poet not because of its majesty. It is dearer
to her because she had played with her siblings under the tree. The poet remembers
the tree because of the many happy memories of her childhood days. The Casuarina
tree also laments the loss of her presence. She hopes that the Casuarina tree will be
remembered as the ‘Yew tree’ of Borrowdale immortalized by Wordsworth.
Toru Dutt and her siblings spent most of the time under the tree. The tree
harbours and nurtures animals and human beings. There is a godly nature attributed to
trees in India. The Casuarina tree may die one day. Its love and verse has
immortalised the tree even after her days. Thus the poet has given the Casuarina tree –
an endless life by writing this ode.
