8. Read the article and put the sentences A–G in the correct place.
SETTING GOALS
Very few people achieve success totally by accident; you have to make it happen – and that
means having goals. Setting your own goals is the first step towards getting what you want
out of life.

Why set goals?

Do you sometimes feel that your life has no real purpose? Do you drift from one event to
another? 1 ....... Sometimes that’s not good enough and you need to take more control of your
life. Setting goals can help focus your mind and give more meaning to what you do. Your
goals will motivate you so that you get the best out of life, and your confidence will increase as
you reach each goal. Most successful people have set goals for themselves along the way.
With careful thought and planning, you’ll find that all your hard work will start to take you in the
right direction.

Decide what's important

This is a good time to stop and think about what really matters to you. For some, success is
money, and that means finding a way of making it, whether it is through years of study and hard
work, by starting a business, or by inventing something. But we’re all different, and different
things make us happy. It might be more important to you to have a large family, or a job that
you love doing, rather than being super-rich. After all, what use is making a million if it means
you have no time for yourself, your family or your friends? 2 ....... It can’t buy health either, so
don’t kill yourself over something you’re not all that sure you really want.

Visualise your future

What image do you have of your future self? How do you see your life twenty years from now?
3 ....... Of course, we don’t know what will happen in the future and our dreams might not come
true. But this is no time for negativity. Think only about positive things and try to see them in
detail in your mind’s eye – your home, your job, your lifestyle. A clear image of what you want
to achieve can be very motivating. You can deal with any changes later. For now, you need
something to aim for.

Prioritise
You should now have a good idea of your main goals, but you need to choose the most
important ones. 4 ....... Too many goals will leave you without enough time to work on any of
them; too few and the chances are you won’t put in the effort. Also if you only have one goal,
there’s a danger of you becoming obsessed with one thing, and that’s not healthy. Now take
a piece of paper and write down your goals. It’s a lot harder to cheat if you’ve written stuff down.

Keep your goals focused

Writing ‘Get rich’ won’t help you much if you have no idea how to go about it. You need smaller,
more manageable goals that will help you get there. What can you do today that will help you
move towards your idea of your perfect future? Perhaps you want to get fit or improve your
health. Decide what you need to do in order to achieve that. 5 ....... These are things you could
do today – add them to your list of goals, and start working on them now. Even going to bed
early (so that you get a good start tomorrow) can make a difference. Don’t ignore your long-term
goals, but stay focused on the things you can do now.

Extend and review

Follow up your daily goals with weekly or monthly ones. These could be something like, ‘Finish
the project by the end of next week,’ or ‘By the start of November, I want to have saved €100.’
Keep reviewing your goals. 6 ....... If not, why not? What can you do to make it happen?
Perhaps you need to change the goal. Consider this a valuable lesson. If you did achieve a
goal, congratulate yourself. Even reward yourself with a day off, or a similar treat. Just one
small goal that you achieved is a great success. Feel proud – you deserve it!

Be flexible and enjoy the ride

If you ask someone at 40 to remember what they wanted when they were 18, they’ll probably
tell you about the goals they didn’t achieve. We plan for the ideal, but we often have to settle
for less than perfect. 7 ....... It’s quite normal, and it doesn’t mean you’re a failure. But don’t
stop having goals because of this. Maybe one of your goals can wait another year while you
deal with something more urgent. Above all, it’s no good thinking that your happiness is all in
the future – you have to enjoy the journey. So make sure that you live your life now, because
you won’t get a second chance.

1 ....... 2 ....... 3 ....... 4 ....... 5 ....... 6 ....... 7 .......

A How about ten years or five years from now, or even next year?
B Naturally, things happen that make us change our direction in life, but that’s OK.
C It could be something very simple, like giving up snacks or taking up a sport.
D Did you reach your last goal?
E Think about which goals you most want to achieve – five is a reasonable number.
F Do you just let life happen?
G Money, they say, can’t buy happiness.
