Introduction

Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam was one of the most respected and inspiring figures in modern

India. Popularly known as the Missile Man of India, he served as the 11th President of India from 2002 to

2007. He was not just a politician, but also a brilliant scientist, a dedicated teacher, and a true patriot.

Early Life

Date of Birth: October 15, 1931

Place of Birth: Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu

Family Background: Born in a poor Muslim family, his father was a boat owner. Despite financial challenges,

Kalam was a bright and hardworking student.

Education:

- Graduated in Physics from Saint Joseph's College, Tiruchirappalli.

- Studied Aerospace Engineering at Madras Institute of Technology.

Scientific Career

Dr. Kalam joined the Defense Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and later moved to the

Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

Key Contributions in Science & Technology:

- SLV-III (Satellite Launch Vehicle): India's first satellite launch vehicle, successfully launched Rohini satellite

in 1980.

- Agni and Prithvi Missiles: Led the development of ballistic missiles under the Integrated Guided Missile

Development Programme (IGMDP).

- Pokhran-II Nuclear Tests (1998): Played a key role in the nuclear tests, making India a nuclear power.
