Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to indicate the correct
answer to each of the following questions from 31 to 36.

The brain is the most amazing part of our body and despite all medical research nobody really understands
everything about it. But just like our bodies, it needs to be cared for in ways that can be quite simple. Getting a
good night's sleep, eating a balanced diet and taking deep breaths are all important methods of looking after
both your body and your brain.
Many people think their brain will slow down with age and their memory will get worse as a result. The truth
is, just like your body, you can also improve your mind. I've found I can improve my memory by imagining
what I need to remember. For example, if I'm going shopping and I need bread, milk and a birthday card for my
brother, I imagine a loaf of bread, a carton of milk with a cow on the front and a birthday card with a football
on it.
The same kind of method can be used with important dates. If you have a picture in your mind of a particular
event it's much easier to remember than just a number on a calendar.
Another way of improving your mind is to make sure you regularly visit new places and have new experiences.
Personally I find learning Spanish is a great way to keep the brain working, but communication in any language
is important. Having a conversation is so much better for your brain than staring at a computer screen or at
other people talking on TV.

Question 31. What is the main idea of the reading passage?

A. The brain is impossible to understand fully, but we can take steps to care for it and improve memory.
B. The brain stops working effectively as we age.
C. Imagining pictures is the best way to remember things.
D. Watching TV is a great way to stimulate the brain.
Question 32. The word staring in paragraph 1 is CLOSEST in meaning to
A. gazing
B. looking around
C. peering
D. glancing
Question 33. What does the writer use to give more explanations to each point?
A. scientific studies
B. real-life examples
C. direct quotes
D. survey results
Question 34. Which example is NOT mentioned in the text?
A. Using imagery to remember a shopping list
B. Learning a new language
C. Imagining events to recall important dates
D. Solving puzzles to keep the brain active
Question 35. What does the writer say about her own memory?
A. It has been possible to make it better. (I’ve found I can improve my memory)
B. She finds objects more difficult to remember than numbers
C. It has got worse over the years.
D. She often forgets birthday.
Question 36. The word important in paragraph 3 is OPPOSITE in meaning to
A. essential
B. significant
C. trivial
D. crucial

Climbing Everest
Some years ago, I was feeling really depressed with my job. I was no longer sure I could manage in the
challenging environment of working for a big company in London. 1________. I knew I had to do something to
believe in myself again and then, while I was chatting with a friend, I decided to take a break to go and follow
my dreams.

At the time it seemed like a crazy idea. Perhaps it was only because I was scared of the unknown. 2________.
Interestingly, instead of feeling miserable, I felt glad that the decision had been made for me.

3_______. So I didn’t give it a second thought. I knew that this was a once-in-a-lifetime chance. I had some
money saved and I was reasonably fit, as I went jogging daily. All I needed, then, was to join a climbing club to
prepare. And that was really simple, as my brother owned one.

Three months later, I made an application to join a group of climbers who were preparing for Everest. Imagine
how glad I was when I heard that I had been accepted to join the team.
4________. This was a great idea, allowing us to meet each other online and talk about our preparation for the
trip.

The next step was to actually start preparing for the climb. Reliable equipment had to be bought as we would be
dealing with below zero temperatures. Of course, all this was experience but it was absolutely necessary.
Climbing the highest mountain in the world is not the easiest goal and trying to save money on cheap
equipment, as our group leader warned us, was something we could pay for with our lives.

A. I had always had one ambition: to climb Mount Everest

B. Then, someone suggested starting a chat group
C. However, a month later I suddenly found myself unemployed
D. I really had no confidence in myself anymore
