F. Writing
Practice 1: In some countries, people spend long hours at work. Why does this happen? Is
it positive or negative development?

In this day and age, it has been a common belief that in several nations a large number of people
work long hours a day. There are various reasons for this and I strongly believe that this trend/
fact/ situation is completely/ absolutely disadvantageous.

To begin with, there are many reasons why people spend long hours at work. The first reason is
that working long hours enables people to earn more money. By this way, they can meet their
increasingly higher demands such as purchasing a house and taking part in different entertainment
activities. The second reason is that employees sometimes are forced to work overtime by their
companies even if they do not wish to. For example, many international companies pursue really
high expectations, so they require their workers to spend more hours at the office to work.

However, I would argue that the fact that more and more people work overtime is a completely
negative trend for some following reasons. Firstly, working long hours can do harm to people’s
health. It is a fact that our body cannot suffer on-going long hours of working. If people work
long hours in a long period, they can get tired and they can get serious diseases such as backache,
short-sighted eyes, diabetes. Secondly, if people spend long hours at work, their relationships with
family and friends become worse and worse. That is because they can more easily get angry with
their children or their partner when they come home exhausted after a hard day of work.
To sum up, there is a good selection of reasons why some people work long hours, and from my
perspective, this is a totally negative situation.

Perspectives Body 1 (Positive) Body 2 (Negative)

1. …………. earn more money do harm to people's health
=> meet their demands => our body cannot suffer on-going
2. …………. => better standard of living long hours of working => tired/
=> support their family exhausted
=> get disease such backache, short-
sighted eyes, diabetes
=> have no spare time a enjoy meals,
not mention to exercising or relaxing
1. …………. - employees are forced to work - their relationships with family and
overtime => example: international friends become worse and worse
2. …………. companies - high efficiency - long => tired after working day - easier to get
hours - bring about the expected results angry with their children and their
partner => hang with friends -
gradually lose touch - become less close
with each other.
Practise 2: Viết outline cho đề bài sau: Children should watch TV. Do you agree or disagree?
