The Sock Socks | Pattern by Athena Liu

The Sock Socks pattern is a modi cation to my basic sock pattern “No Frills Toe Up Socks”. The
colourwork pattern is adapted from a stitch pattern from the KnitOvation Stitch Dictionary by Andrea
Rangel. This document includes the colourwork chart and the modi cations done to the basic sock
pattern. However, feel free to use the chart on any other toe-up sock pattern that you are comfortable
with! You may also read the chart reversely and knit the sock cuff-down. Please make these socks
however you like to showcase your love for sock-knitting!

PATTERN (SUPPLEMENT)

Follow the stitch counts at the 4th position of the No Frills Toe Up Socks pattern, i.e. casting on
32 sts at the beginning of the toe and increasing to a total of 64 sts per round on the foot. If you
are using another basic sock pattern, select the size that has 64 sts per round on the foot and leg.

< Toe >

Use the smaller needles, work the toe in CC. Do not break the yarn.

< Foot >

Change to the larger needles.

Rnd 1 (Setup): Join yarn in MC, knit one rnd even. This also reads as Row 1 of the Sock Chart.

Follow the plain stockinette version of the basic pattern and continue to work in stranded
colourwork like so: on the instep, continue working the Sock Chart; on the sole, work the two
edge sts always in MC and work a simple “salt and pepper” pattern (alternating every stitch in
MC and CC) within when there are two colours in that row, or work all in MC when it is an all-
MC row (i.e. Row 1 or 13 of the Sock Chart).

Work in this pattern until you have worked a total of 25 rows for the foot.

< Gusset increase >

Work the Gusset increase while continue working the instep following the Sock Chart and the
sole in the the salt and pepper pattern as established above. The increased stitches should be
worked in the salt and pepper pattern as well. By now you have worked a total of 47 rows on
the foot and gusset increase, and you have just worked Row 23 of the Sock Chart for the instep.
Break MC yarn.

< Heel Turn> & < Heel >

Change to the smaller needles, use CC and work the Heel Turn and Heel.

< Leg >

Change to larger needles.

Rnd 1 (Set-up): Remove the current beginning-of-round marker at the centre of the sole.
Continue with CC, K 15, remove marker, SSK. Join MC and continue working the Sock Chart
(i.e. Row 24) across the next 32 instep sts; Place the beginning-of-round marker here instead.
With MC, K2tog, remove marker; K to end of rnd - this also reads as Row 1 of the Sock Chart.
Note: the beginning/end of round has just been changed to the right side of the ankle! There are
now again a total of 64 sts on the needles.

2
Continue working the Sock Chart across all Leg sts repeating the 32 sts of the chart twice every
round. Work a total of 37 rows, ending with Row 13 of the Sock Chart. Break MC yarn.

< Cuff >

Change to smaller needles and work in CC, knit one round, and then *K1, P1* for 15 rounds.
Bind off using the tubular/Italian bind-off method. Weave in all ends in the WS. Wash and
block for a at and even result.

Sock Chart

The orange rectangle marks a pattern repeat.

⚠ An important tip: to avoid the jog when knitting in the round on the leg, move the stitches
on the last 2 sts marked in the purple rectangle down by 1 row so that the rst sock will have a
good-looking toe!
