The Importance of Education
(By Yuvraj Dhama)
“The function of education is to teach one to think intensively and to think critically. Intelligence plus
character - that is the goal of true education.”
These famous lines by Martin Luther King Jr. still resonate with the essence of education. Education
means how we see and perceive things. It is the training of the mind to think critically beyond the
facts. Children are often the most disillusioned with education. This disillusionment leads to the
most sought-after question -Why is education important for us?
We often hear our elders say that without education we won’t be able to get a good job; without a
good job there’d be no money and without the riches we can’t be happy. This breaks down to the
conjecture that education is essential only to get money and thus lead a happy life. Is that really so?
Is that the only reason why we study? The conventional wisdom focuses on this aspect only and that
is why not only children but all of us need to re-evaluate why we need to be educated.
Education from schools and colleges is important because it helps us to gain a new perspective
towards… everything! Whether we talk about working towards the eradication of social evils,
alleviation of poverty, scientific research in any domain or the prevention of wars, terrorism and
strife, education brings a change in our thought processes at the most basic levels. It teaches us to
respect other people’s opinions.
It is an essential tool for getting a brighter future as well as plays a vital role in the development and
progress of the country. Citizens of a country are responsible for the betterment and development
of the country. Highly educated people become the base of a developed country. So, proper
education promises a better future for both the individual and the country. It is only the educated
who build the nation and take it to the heights of success and progress. Education makes people as
perfect and noble as possible. Whether in the lap of luxury or not, an educated person is an asset for
the entire society.
Someone once remarked, “If you give a man a fish you feed him for a day; teach a man how to fish
and you feed him for a lifetime”. Education is just like that. A person who is educated once, who
once learns to question and think, carries that learning throughout his or her life. Such a person will
always work towards his betterment and above all the betterment of whole humanity. This is what
we need to contemplate when we talk of education’s importance.
