How To Sew A Tea Cozy - Instructions

Materials for my pattern (or adjust to your own pattern see below):

Fabric 14” x 54”

Quilting batting: 7.5” x 10.5”
Thread
Optional: Bias tape

Scissors
Pins
Measuring tape
Taylor’s chalk
2 pieces of paper 11” x 8”

1. Create a Pattern: Either you create your own pattern (see the instructions on the next page)
or use the my pattern you just downloaded.
2. Cut out all the pattern pieces and lay them over your fabric. Note: You need to have the
fabric fold where it says “FOLD” on your pattern. The pattern has a ½” seam allowance
included!
3. Cut the fabric and the batting. Note: you will only need 2 pieces of batting but you will need
4 pieces of fabric (or 2 pieces of fabric and 2 pieces of lining).
4. Sandwich 1 piece of batting between 2 pieces of fabric, pin, and sew together. Repeat with
second one.
5. Cut out the piece for the loop handle. Fold the loop handle in half. Then fold each long side
in towards the middle. Sew into a long string.
6. Fold the loop handle in half lengthwise so that the ends are next to each other not on top of
each other. Place the loop handle right at the top of the sewn fabric piece with the raw
edges facing out. Sew it into place.
7. Place the two fabric on top of each other with the right sides together (and the loop handle
on the inside!).
8. Sew the 2 pieces together along, leaving the bottom open.
9. Either make your own long strip of bias tape or use ready-made bias tape so that it will go
around the bottom edge of your cozy (about 28” long).
10. Pin that to the bottom edge of your cozy and sew into place.
How to measure for your own pattern:

1. Place your tea pot in front of you.

2. With a measuring tape measure the width of your pot from spout to handles and add at
least 1 ½” inches. Make sure you account for the curve of the tea pot. Note this
measurement on a piece of paper.
3. Repeat this step for the height and note it on a piece of paper.
4. Multiply both of those numbers by 2. Then add 1”.

Example:

W = 13” x 2 = 26” + 1 = 27”

H = 9.5” x 2 = 19” + 1 = 20”

5. Mark the ½ of the width measurement and the total of the height measurement on a piece
of paper and draw a long curved line between them.
6. Continue with step #2 from above.
