One Nation , One Election
One Nation, One Election is a proposal under consideration by the
Government of India to synchronise all elections in the country either on
a single day or within a specific time frame, with an objective of cutting
election cost. One of its most notable proposals is to simultaneously
conduct elections to the Lok Sabha & state legislative assemblies of all
28 states & 8 union territories.
The Bill was Introduced in Indian Parliament's Lower house, Lok Sabha
on 17th December 2024.
In August 2018, the Law Commission of India released its draft report
on simultaneously holding all direct elections in the country beginning
from the panchayats upto the Lok Sabha within a given time period of a
single year.
In order to conduct such simultaneous elections, it said that there needs
to be made appropriate amendments to the Constitution, the
Representation of the People Act 1951, and the Rules of Procedure of
Lok Sabha and state Assemblies.
on 18 September 2024, the Modi cabinet approved the 'One Nation, One
Election' bill which is scheduled to be brought before the Parliament on
the 2024 Winter session.
The bill was introduced in Lok Sabha on December the 17th, 2024. A
division vote was followed, where 269 members supported the move and
198 opposed it.
The Opposition INDIA bloc strongly objected to the Bill, arguing that
the government failed to secure the required two-thirds majority for such
measures. However, parliamentary procedures suggest that a special
majority may not be required for introducing Constitutional Amendment
Bills.

Manmohan Singh
Minister of Finance (1991–1996)
Manmohan Singh[a] (26 September 1932 – 26 December 2024) was an
Indian politician, economist, academic, and bureaucrat, who served as
the 13th prime minister of India from 2004 to 2014. He was the fourth
longest-serving prime minister after Jawaharlal Nehru, Indira Gandhi
and Narendra Modi.
A member of the Indian National Congress, Singh was the first Sikh
prime minister of India. He was also the first prime minister since Nehru
to be re-elected after completing a full five-year term.
In 1991, as India faced a severe economic crisis, the newly elected prime
minister, P. V. Narasimha Rao, inducted the apolitical Singh into his
cabinet as finance minister. Over the next few years, despite strong
opposition, he carried out several structural reforms that liberalised
India's economy.
In 2004, when the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance came to
power, its chairperson Sonia Gandhi unexpectedly relinquished the
prime ministership to Singh. His first ministry executed several key
legislations and projects, including the National Rural Health Mission,
Unique Identification Authority, Rural Employment Guarantee scheme
and Right to Information Act.
