Read the following article and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the correct option that best fits
each of the numbered blanks from 1 to 6.
People volunteer for different reasons, but probably most of us volunteer in order to try to
improve life for others. However, (1) brings a reward. It seems that volunteers can expect (2)
themselves as well! In the past few years, studies have been showing that people who
volunteer typically experience greater (3) of self-esteem than those who don’t. Similarly,
their overall health and well-being also improves. People who volunteer regularly today will live
longer in the future, and they tend to suffer from fewer diseases – although of course there are no
guarantees!
Partly, these health benefits are (4) the extra exercise, as volunteers are usually fairly
active people. Helping others burns calories! What’s more, it seems that we generally enjoy making
others happy, in turn (5) our energy and fitness levels.
So how much time should we volunteer for? (6) studies suggest that we need to
volunteer for at least 100 hours a year to enjoy the full advantages.

If they hadn’t owned a goat …
When we think about who has had the biggest impact (7) our lives so far, many of us
would probably say parents, friends or teachers. For Beatrice Biira it is … a goat. Beatrice, her mother
and her seven brothers and sisters lived in a small village in Uganda. They were very poor and basic

family was given a goat by a (9) called Heifer International.
Within three months of receiving the goat, Beatrice and her family had (10)
enough money from the sale of the goat’s milk to send Beatrice to school. Although she was much
older than the other children in her class, she did well, studied hard and soon won a scholarship to a
school in Massachusetts, USA. From there, she (11) to
Connecticut College and then finally studied for a Master’s Degree. Beatrice has many people to
thank for their support and encouragement along the way. But most of all, she’s grateful to that first

Beatrice now works as an ambassador for Heifer. It’s a very (12) and worthwhile job
– she is happy to help other children like her and to return the gift of hope that Heifer gave her when

Read the following passage about Fat America and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the
correct option that best fits each of the numbered blanks from 18 to 22.
America is getting fatter. Back in the 1970s, only 10% of teens were overweight, but today, one in
three teenagers (or more than 25 million) are overweight or obese. Let’s take a look at the reasons why.
In the suburbs, houses are bigger, gardens are bigger, and teenagers are bigger, too. It’s easy to
see why – they go everywhere in cars. Suburbs are a long way from shopping centres, schools and
friends’ houses. (18) . As a result, families spend an average of two hours a day in their cars.
A typical American family has three TVs and the average teenager, or ‘screenager’, (19)
. By the time they leave High School, most teenagers will have spent more time in front of a
TV than in the classroom. But it’s not just TV (20) . The average US home has 24 electronic
gadgets, including smartphones, computers and games consoles. It’s not surprising that only 12.2% of
American teenagers actually exercise each week.
Fast food is one of America’s great success stories and Americans have been eating hamburgers
for decades. Today, 50% of meals are eaten outside the home and more than three quarters of American
teenagers eat at a fast food meal at least once a week. (21) . Why? Probably because the salt,
fat and sugar makes it taste really good.
So what does the future hold for America? Doctors fear an epidemic of illnesses like diabetes,
heart disease and cancer. But health centres for obese children are starting to make a difference. At the
centres are children like 12-year-old Conchita. Conchita’s tired today because she’s been exercising.
‘It’s hard work, but I’m feeling good,’ she says. ‘How many times has she exercised this week?’
‘Three,’ she replies, ‘and I’ve given up fast food, too.’ ‘Wanting long lives and hoping to achieve
many goals, (22)
.’ explains a doctor at the centre. Ving , S + V

Read the following passage about Nick Vujicic and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 23 to 30.
Before Nick Vujicic was born, his parents had no idea that he would go on to have any medical
problems – none of the medical checks had ever shown a problem. However, when he was born, it was
clear that his life would be different from that of other babies. Growing up would not be easy. His
parents decided to send him to a normal school, where he would use a wheelchair, and where there were
carers available to assist him.
The experience was difficult, but Nick feels it was the best decision his parents could have made,
because it would give him a sense of independence. Unsurprisingly, when he was at school, he
sometimes felt depressed and lonely, and was sometimes bullied. But he always had the support of his
loyal friends and family, and these people made him determined to overcome many problems. He even
went on to study at university, where he was awarded a degree in Financial Planning and Real Estate.
What surprises many people is just how optimistic Nick can be, and how many different things
he has managed to do. Much of this is down to his parents. His father put him in the water for the first
time when he was 18 months, so that Nick would be self-confident enough to swim when he was older.
He has one small foot which he can use to help him move around in the water. He is able to operate a
computer by using the toe on this foot to type, something he learned to do when he was just six years
old. And when he plays golf – yes, he even plays golf – he is able to hold the golf club under his chin.

Read the following passage about stealth marketing and mark the letter A, B, C, or D to indicate the
correct answer to each of the questions from 31 to 40.
Imagine this: on your way home, a ‘tourist’ in the street asks you to take a photo with their
camera.
[I] You do and, afterwards, they tell you how they bought the camera recently and how it’s on special
offer. [II] Welcome to the world of stealth marketing. [III] You may say you haven’t met a stealth
marketer yet, but that’s the point. [IV] The chances are that you have.
Stealth or ‘word of mouth’ marketing isn’t like normal advertising. We can recognise adverts on
billboards or in glossy magazines, but it’s difficult to spot stealth marketing – it just tricks us. More
than
$500 billion a year is spent on advertising worldwide, but compared with conventional advertising
campaigns, stealth marketing is cheap and effective. So how does it work? Well, let’s look at
company
X. Company X wants to launch a new product for teens. They need their product to look ‘cool’ and
interesting, so they decide to pay young people to talk about it. Seventeen-year-old Tanya Fulham is one
of them.
Tanya Fulham is beautiful, sporty and clever. She’s interested in fashion, loves shopping, and
listens to the latest pop music. She has more than 150 friends on her social media page and she often
influences their choices and opinions. She’s the latest recruit of an undercover marketing agency. People
like Tanya promote brands in blogs and on social media websites. ‘It’s great getting free samples of
cool, new products that my friends haven’t heard about,’ adds Tanya. ‘It makes me feel important
because I have insider knowledge.’ But do her friends know that she is paid to promote them? ‘No,
they don’t,’ she admits. ‘But I don’t think it’s dishonest. If I find something I like, I talk about it. It
doesn’t make any difference whether I’m paid or not.’
Perhaps Tanya is right. Lots of people tell others about the new book they’re reading, a new
place they’ve discovered or a cool gadget they’ve just bought. We’re also a 24/7 generation and see
more than 3,000 ads a day, so what difference does it make? However, other people are worried. ‘You
think a person is being helpful,’ says retail psychologist David Green, ‘but that’s very different from
someone telling us something because they are getting paid for it. We don’t know who to trust or who to
listen to anymore.’ We have already met the stealth marketers and they are just like us.

surpasses $500 billion, unlike conventional advertising campaigns.
B. Were traditional campaigns more affordable and effective than stealth marketing, companies wouldn’t

C. Although over $500 billion is spent globally on advertising each year, stealth marketing is a cheaper
and more effective alternative to traditional campaigns.

C. We are constantly bombarded with ads, so we fail to realise the power of marketing.
D. Living in a modern society means we’ve lost our ability to distinguish real and fake ads.

A. Stealth marketing uses ordinary people like Tanya to promote products online without clearly
revealing they're paid, making it hard to tell advertising from friendly advice.
B. Young influencers like Tanya promote trendy products openly on social media, helping companies
advertise more effectively than traditional campaigns like magazines or billboards.
C. Stealth marketing often involves influencers like Tanya sharing product recommendations with
friends, making it an honest and affordable approach to advertising.
D. Tanya shares products she likes with friends online, and stealth marketing relies on teens’ opinions to
spread excitement about new items.
