The Garden of Words
Japanese anime drama released in 2013, written, directed, and edited by Makoto Shinkai.
produced by CoMix Wave Films and distributed by Tōhō. It stars Miyu
IrinoyKana Hanazawa, with music by Daisuke Kashiwa instead of Tenmon, who had been
the regular composer of the director. The main song, "Rain", was originally written and
performed by Senri Oe in 1988, but was redone for the movie and sung by Motohiro
Hata. The tape was adapted into a manga, with illustrations by Midori Motohashi, and later
novelized by Shinkai, both in the same year as the film.
The movie focuses on Takao Akizuki, a 15-year-old aspiring shoemaker, and Yukari Yukino,
a mysterious 27-year-old woman; they meet in the National Garden Shinjuku Gyoen, where
they both meet during rainy mornings. While Takao skips his classes.
Morning sessions to design shoes, Yukari avoids going to work due to personal issues in her
professional life. She does not tell him anything, including her name, while the boy is
opens up to the girl, shares her passion for shoes and offers to make her a pair. The emotions
they reach a critical point when Takao discovers Yukari's identity and they realize that
they have been teaching each other 'how to walk'. Shinkai wrote the story as
"lonely sadness", based on the traditional Japanese meaning of "love", and uses the shoes
as a metaphor for life. The motives include rain, poetryCollection of Ten Thousand Leavesand the garden
Japanese. According to the director, the age difference between the two main characters and their
character traits show how clumsily and disconnectedly people mature, where
Even adults sometimes do not feel more mature than teenagers.
The garden of words premiered in theGold Coast Film Festival, in Australia, on April 28
from 2013, and its general release in Japan was on May 31. In this last one, the film is
projected with a short animated film titledSomeone's GazeSomeone's gaze ?
