What is Humility and What is the

What is its meaning in the Bible?
Daniel Conegero

Humility is the opposite of pride. Being humble means having a mental attitude.
that never lets itself be carried away by pride and arrogance. Throughout the Bible the
humility is a praised quality, and not seldom the blessings of the Lord are
poured out upon the humble.

The writer of Proverbs says that humility precedes honor (Proverbs 15:33;
In the Bible, humility often appears in connection with meekness.
This relationship is so deep that in certain biblical passages the words
humility and meekness are used to translate the same original terms.

The meaning of humility in the Bible

The word "humility" translates a biblical term that in its derivation suggests
a close connection with distress; as a result of it. This means that
Many times, affliction is part of God's purpose with the intent of producing

Humility is such a fundamental virtue that it is part of one's own character.

Just the fact that the Almighty God relates to such a flawed creature

of the Holy Spirit in your life. Humility is not just a mere complex of
inferiority. It is a sincere attitude that leaves no room for arrogance and the
self-sufficiency; for one who is truly humble recognizes their total
dependence on God; he knows that everything he has comes from the Lord. The Bible says
God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble (Proverbs 3:34).
Through the prophet Isaiah, God Himself, who is sublime and great, says that if
delights in dwelling with him who has a contrite and humble spirit (Isaiah
57:15). The Lord Jesus also said that the humble are blessed
(Matthew 5:3-12). Moreover, He Himself declared: "Take my yoke upon you,
And learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart; and you will find
rest for your souls" (Matthew 11:29).

One of Jesus' parables also addresses this very issue.

In the Parable of the First Places, Jesus taught an important lesson about the
humility and self-deprecation. This parable aligns with the teaching that the
humility precedes honor. That is why Jesus concluded the parable by saying that
whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself

Paul urges Christians not to do anything out of selfish ambition or vanity.

superior to themselves (Philippians 2:3).

The same apostle advises believers to develop true

humility, a humility that is accompanied by other virtues such as the
mercy, kindness, meekness, patience, forgiveness and,
mainly, love (Colossians 3:12-14). This love, however, is not just any
type of love, but it is agape love, a selfless and true love.

Examples of humility in the Bible
There are several examples of humility in the Bible, just as there are examples of

people who suffered from a lack of humility.

King Nebuchadnezzar was someone who embraced arrogance and despised the.
divine exhortation about the need for humility. For this reason, he was
punished by God and in the end had to acknowledge the greatness of the Lord (Daniel
5:18-21.

Later, Belshazzar fell into an even worse error. He learned nothing from the
an example of Nebuchadnezzar who was reprimanded by the prophet Daniel who denounced
your lack of humility (Daniel 5:22).
On the other hand, men like Abraham, Job, Moses, Jeremiah, Paul, and many others,
they reflect what it means to have a humble spirit. But without a doubt we find
Jesus Christ is the supreme example of humility. During his earthly ministry,
He provided several visible demonstrations of humility, such as his
attention to the disregarded and rejected people, or when He washed the feet of
his disciples (John 13:3-16).

The Apostle Paul looked at Christ's own incarnation as the greatest of

all the examples of humility, and with which Christians must learn and
to imitate. The Son of God deliberately set aside his divine prerogative and
he emptied himself by taking the form of a servant. Being found in form
human, He humbled Himself and was obedient to death. But at the time
Because He was exalted sovereignly (Philippians 2:5-9).

4 things everyone should know about

humility
Is your understanding of humility biblically correct?

There can be a lot of confusion around the concept of humility. Often, the
humility is associated with silence, submission, and thoughts of inadequacy.
But what does the Bible really say about him?

Here are four biblical points that every Christian should know about humility.
1. Humility means to subordinate oneself, but not
to crawl
Humility and submission go hand in hand. The word of God says that we, as
Christians should submit to one another in humility. "And you young ones
submit yourselves to the elders. And all of you must clothe yourselves with humility for
with the other. Because God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble." 1.
Pedro 5,5-6.

By subordinating ourselves and 'clothing ourselves in humility' we can create peace.

be the unit with others. We should not be so proud and haughty that we do not
we may receive reprimand or warning. We should also not have the
mindset that our own opinions and thoughts are always
better than others. Thinking this way does not lead us to progress or to
unity in Christ.

Being submissive and humble does not mean in any way that we should bow down.
for other people. Paulo was very clear when he said that we must serve others.
God is only God. "For you were bought, do not be servants of
men!» 1 Cor. 7:23. He also writes: "I am now seeking to be recognized
by people – or by God? Or am I trying to please people? If I still
I seek to please people, I am not a servant of Christ." Gal. 1:10.

Although it is important for us to submit, that is, to accept reprimand and

to remain humble in our own eyes, we, as Christians, must
to seek to please God with our lives. We must fear Him and obey His
word. This should be our focus: to humble ourselves under the will of God and
to live and breathe to obey your commandments, and not to try to meet the
demands and expectations of people.

2. Humility does not mean that we are people

silent or passive
Your adornment will not be the external... but the hidden man of the heart, with the

incorruptible ornament – a gentle and tranquil spirit, which is precious to

God." 1 Peter 3:3-4. God wants Christians to have a gentle spirit and
calm. It is extremely important that we are humble and calm, in our
inner man, so that we can hear the Spirit of God speaking to our
hearts throughout the day.

Having a gentle and calm spirit does not mean that we should be people
passive. God also requires action and zeal in our lives. Jesus teaches us
for the kingdom of heaven is taken by force. (Matthew 11:12) whoever wants a life more
Deep in Christ realizes that it needs to be zealous and humble in its being.
interior. Sin cannot be allowed to prevail in the heart of a
disciple! If we are humble in our inner man, with the desire to do the
will of God, we will do everything to keep our hearts and minds
pure. Paul writes: "Do not be lukewarm in fervor! Be fervent in spirit,
"Serve the Lord!" Rom. 12:11.

In the same way, while we must always have a quiet and humble spirit
of the Lord, there are some situations where God wants us to be bold and
let's talk. Here we must, as always, set aside our own honor, reputation
and natural expectations, and obey the Lord with all reverence. Not
we should question our own authority or the ability to say or do
anything that God will do through us. Instead, we must let God
use us as he wants in any situation.

3. Humility means that we use our

talents and skills
Because of the grace that was given to me, I say to every one of you, do not think of yourselves more highly than you ought to think.

become superior to what is appropriate. But think with moderation, according to the measure

of the faith that God has distributed to each one." Rom. 12:3. Having a humble mindset is,

think moderately about yourself. This means not boasting about your
skills and abilities. Also recognize that our capacity comes from
God in all things. (2 Cor. 3:5)

This does not mean that we should ignore the gifts and the heavenly calling that God gives us.

God wants to do a huge and transformative work through our lives!

He endowed us with each of our own talents and gifts and purchased us.
by the precious blood of your son Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 1:18-20)
God wants him to be able to use us for His glory and for His plan, and each one
we must be aware of this. Humility is when we use our talents and
skills in God's direction and leadership, thus giving Him the honor for what was
made in us and through our lives.

"As each one has received a gift, let them serve one another, as good"
administrators of the multifaceted grace of God. If anyone speaks, he speaks the word
of God. If anyone serves, he serves by the power that God gives, so that God may be
glorified in all things through Jesus Christ – To Him is the glory and power
forever and ever. Amen." 1 Peter 4:10-11.

Humility is the key to progress

God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble. Therefore submit yourselves,
to God! Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Draw near to God, and he will
He will draw near to you. ... Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you." James

4,6-8.10. God works according to the laws. It is a law of nature that, if we

we humble ourselves under the mighty hand of God, and we give our will and
honor, he will give us the grace we need to live a Christian life, in
Truth, and exalt us in due time.

To be humble is to have the same mindset as Jesus Christ. He had the likeness
of God, but did not consider equality with God something to be grasped
to secure. Instead, he took on a position of a slave and came in
similarity of men. "And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself and became obedient to death—yes, even death on a cross.

Jesus is the greatest example of humility. He did not value his own reputation.
you honor, but offered it voluntarily in any situation, so that the
God's will can be done and God can be glorified through your life.

If we have the same humble mindset, and abandon reputation and honor
to be obedient to the word and will of God, we will be able to do
incredible progress in our Christian life! God keeps a watchful eye over the
our hearts are ready and eager to strengthen those who want to live

who is poor, and those who have a broken spirit, and who tremble before the
my word.» Isaiah 66: 1-2.

God wants us to be among those people who have a humble mentality.

It is a desire and longing to do your will and tremble before your word.
We should not be rich and satisfied with ourselves. That is pride that
hinders God from doing the transformative work in our lives. No,
we must be humble and poor in heart. Thus, God sees us and gives us grace
what we need to have real progress in our Christian life.
