Involvement to Career Clarity Among Senior High School
StudentsReviewReview of Related Literature
The influence of parental involvement and career guidance
on high school students' career development and decision-making has
been extensively studied. These studies highlight the significant role
parents play in shaping their children's career maturity, self-efficacy, and
overall career choices, especially during adolescence when career
exploration is crucial.
Zahra and Malik (2024) investigated how parental
involvement, particularly through sensitization, affects the career maturity
of high school students. Employing an experimental design, they
examined three groups: students alone, students with sensitized parents,
and students with non-sensitized parents. The intervention involved
career exploration activities using the Urdu-translated Career Key
(Hussain et al., 2014) and focus group discussions for parental
sensitization. Results indicated that students with sensitized parents
demonstrated significantly higher career maturity (M = 19.82, SD = 3.02)
compared to students without parental involvement. These findings
suggest that parental engagement, especially when parents are trained
and sensitized, can enhance students' readiness and confidence in
making career decisions. This underscores the importance of parental
involvement in career guidance programs.
Similarly, Baldon et al. (2023) explored the relationship
between parental career behavior and students' career decision-making
self-efficacy among senior high school students. Using validated
questionnaires and correlation analysis, they found that high levels of
parental career behavior positively correlated with students' confidence in
making career decisions. The study emphasized that parents’ active
modeling of career behaviors and providing guidance significantly
contribute to students’ self-efficacy. The authors recommend that both
parents and students actively explore various career options, supported
by school programs that foster career awareness, thereby facilitating
informed decision-making.
Furthermore, Schroedel and Carnahan (2019) highlighted
how parental encouragement and activities support the career
development of deaf high school graduates. Their qualitative and survey
data revealed that most parents engaged in discussions and activities to
stimulate their children's career awareness. Despite their support, a
substantial number of parents expressed a need for more career planning
information. The study advocates for improved communication and
training for parents to better assist their children in career planning.
In the context of adolescents’ career indecision, Fernandes and
Bance (2015) examined how career thoughts, parental support, and self-
efficacy influence career decision-making. Their findings indicated
significant correlations among these variables, with parental support and
self-efficacy serving as protective factors against career indecision. The
study recommends integrating these factors into career guidance
programs, emphasizing active parental involvement and fostering
adolescents’ confidence in their career choices.
Extending beyond high school students, Alboliteeh et al.
(2022) investigated how parental authority mediates the relationship
between career decision-making self-efficacy, decision ambiguity
tolerance, and career choice among nursing students in Saudi Arabia.
Their path analysis revealed that parental authority positively influences
students’ career decisions and mediates the relationship between self-
efficacy and career choice. This study emphasizes that authoritative
parental support can significantly guide students in making confident
career decisions, particularly in specialized fields like nursing.
Collectively, these studies demonstrate that parental
involvement, whether through direct engagement, modeling, or
authoritative support, plays a vital role in fostering career maturity, self-
efficacy, and informed decision-making among students. Implementing
structured interventions and enhancing communication between parents,
schools, and students can bolster career development outcomes.
