LinkedIn Guide

1. What is LinkedIn?

a. Think of instagram but instead of selfies and vacation pics, it's people
showing their professional side. That’s basically LinkedIn. It’s like an online
resume and networking platform where you get FOMO and motivation just in
a scroll. You make a profile where you add your education, experiences,
skills, and things you’re proud of. Then you connect with other people, your
friends, tutors, seniors, professors, industry people.

2. What are connections?

a. Think of connections on LinkedIn like friends on Facebook—but way more

professional. When you connect with someone, it means you both are now
part of each other’s professional network. You can now message each other,
see full profiles, and engage with each other’s content (like, comment, etc).
But unlike Instagram or Snapchat, LinkedIn connections aren’t just about
people you vibe with socially. They're mostly people you want to learn from,
collaborate with, or grow with professionally.

3. What is that “1st, 2nd, 3rd+” written beside the profiles?

a. Its a web, a professional web which tells you about the connection level

i. 1st: These are people you’re already directly connected with. Like,
you've sent them a connection request and they accepted or they
added you..

ii. 2nd: These are friends of your LinkedIn friends. You’re not directly
connected to them, but you share at least one mutual connection.

iii. 3rd+: These are basically strangers. They don’t share any direct or
mutual connection with you. You might not be able to message them
directly unless you have LinkedIn Premium. But you can still try to
connect or follow them.

4. What should I write in my LinkedIn headline apart from “student at XYZ
college”?

a. Your headline is your first impression so apart from just adding your college,
you can add what you currently are at and what you are exploring.
5. How do I write the “About Me” section so that it looks interesting?

a. Keep this a bit conversational, start by mentioning your course then go on
telling what do you want to pursue or what excites you, what are your
hobbies, your likings etc. For eg -

“Hey there! I'm a second-year B.Com Hons student at Shaheed Bhagat Singh
College. I’ve been diving into equity research and quantitative analytics
through python and mathematics, and I’m really curious about fintech. I'm
learning every day and open to any opportunity that helps me grow.”

6. Is it necessary to put a professional photo on LinkedIn? What kind of photo

should I use?

a. Yes, you don't have to look “corporate”, it’s about looking real. Just wear a
plain shirt, stand in front of a clean background, and smile. No selfies or
group pics, it isn't Instagram.

7. Is it okay to post on LinkedIn if I don’t have big achievements yet? What kind
of posts can I make?

a. Absolutely, no one looks at you for being a millionaire or prodigy but a
budding and growing individual, so post your learnings from podcasts, books,
real life incidents, or small victories of finishing the tasks to cracking an exam,
winning a competition, sometimes post about random happenings by linking
them to something useful.

8. Can I post about college projects or non-academic activities too?

a. If you did a group project, made a PPT, or even volunteered at a fest, share
what you learned. Anything in which you learnt certain skills or applied . You
can also post about hobbies and link them to something meaningful.

9. Is it useful to follow company pages or join LinkedIn groups?

a. Yes, it does help you with receiving great insights from their posts and helps
you be updated about what's going on in your interested areas.

10.I don’t have internships or work experience—what should I write in the

“Experience” section?

a. Write anything about where you learned something practical. It could range
from being a head boy to organising events at your school.

11.How do I find internships on LinkedIn? Should I message people directly or

just apply?
a. Both. After applying, drop a nice smart message where you crisply introduce
yourself while connecting yourself with the role you applied for.

12.How often should I update my profile?

a. Every time you do something new. You acquired a certificate, new
experience, reached a milestone, go for it!

Remember, LinkedIn is not instagram so you don’t have to be worried about getting bullied
or feel underconfident or hesitant about sharing something. All you will find is just positivity
and appreciation and opportunities flowing all around !!
