➔ In a groundbreaking achievement, Italian researchers have successfully transformed light into a

supersolid for the first time in history.
What is a Supersolid? A supersolid behaves like both a solid and a liquid at once. It has a solid
structure but flows without resistance, like a liquid. Forms only at very low temperatures (near
absolute zero).
How Was It Created?
Scientists combined light with matter to create polaritons. Polaritons = light + excitons (particle
pairs). When cooled to their lowest energy, they formed a supersolid.
Potential Applications:
Quantum computing: Improves stability. Superconductors: Enables zero-resistance electricity.
Frictionless lubricants: Better efficiency in machines. Advanced materials: For tech, sensors, energy
storage. Physics research: Helps explore quantum behavior of matter.

➔ Total Fertility Rate remains constant at 2.0 in 2021
The Sample Registration System (SRS) Statistical Report 2021, released by the Registrar General of
India (RGI), highlights that India’s Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has remained constant at 2.0 in 2021,
the same as in 2020.

Total Fertility Rate (TFR)

– The average number of children born to a woman during her childbearing years.
– A TFR of 2.1 is considered the replacement level needed to maintain a stable population.

Key Findings
Bihar has reported the highest TFR at 3.0, while Delhi and West Bengal reported the lowest TFR of
1.4. The mean age at effective marriage for females has increased from 19.3 years in 1990 to 22.5
years in 2021.
Significance of the Findings
-Population Stabilization : TFR of 2.0 shows India is nearing population stability
Reduced pressure on resources, public services, environment
-Demographic Dividend :Larger working-age population = higher productivity & economic
growth
- Improved Maternal Health: Fewer births + delayed marriages = less maternal mortality, better
child care, healthier families
- Women Empowerment : Lower fertility linked to education, workforce entry & autonomy
Results in stronger social and economic outcomes
➔ Negative Impacts of Declining TFR
-Ageing Population
More elderly dependents = stress on working class
Greater need for pension, healthcare, and social welfare
- Skewed Sex Ratio
fertility drop + gender bias= rise in sex selective practices
risk pf unbalanced male female ratios
-demographic imbalance : Wide state-wise fertility gaps = increased migration
Potential for cultural shift & strain on low-TFR states

While the stabilization of TFR is a positive indicator for controlling population growth, it also
brings new challenges.
The rising elderly population will increase demand for healthcare services, pensions, and social
welfare schemes.
