Helps understand his/ her feelings and attitude.

Things to focus to interpret a speaker’s attitude

1. Tone

a. High or rising tone: strong positive feelings

b. Lower or falling tone: negative attitude

2. Speech rate

a. Fast speech rate: strong feeling (positive and negative)

b. Slower speech rate: calm or neutral attitude

3. Language

a. Positive expressions: positive view

b. Negative or critical phrases: negative view

e.g.

Self-tracking takes discipline, but can offer really useful information that’s
easy to implement.

Self-tracking takes far too much time and gives useless information that’s
impractical to act on.

SPEAKING:
SPEAKING SKILL: Express your View Strongly

There are several ways to express a strong point of view:

1. Using modals
e.g. You can do that. (normal) → You must do that. (strong)

2. Using adverbs of degree


e.g. I believe that… (normal) → I truly believe that. (strong)

3. Using subjunctive after certain adjectives


e.g. Maybe he should go… (normal) → It is essential that he go… (strong)

Contrasts

To compare and contrast, use stress and intonation to clarify your points:

Stress — stress the words showing comparison or contrast, or the things or ideas
that are being compared.
e.g. This new fitness tracker cost less than my old one, but it has more features.

Intonation — In sentence contrasting a positive idea with a negative one, use rising
intonation on the positive and falling on the negative.
e.g. Tracking your life us great, but it can take a lot of time.

PRESENTATION SKILL: Rehearse your Talk

When rehearsing, follow these tips:

1. Rehearse the talk repeatedly until being confident and delivering it naturally and
fluently.

2. Ask others to watch the rehearse. Ideally, ask one person who knows the subject
and one person who is unfamiliar with it. Listen to their feedbacks and adopt the
best suggestions.

3. If possible, record yourself rehearsing, play back and note things need improving.
If impossible, practice in front of the mirror.
