MARKET SURVEY REPORT

OF WOOD PRODUCTS
By- Radhika Shinde
B.des 3rd year.

Wood is the first material and one of the most used materials to be
employed in the construction field.
There is difference between two terms -timber and wood.
1. Wood includes all types of wood that may be burning wood,
structural wood, furniture wood etc.
2. Whereas timber is suitable for work as structural material.

TIMBER:-
3. The wood that is suitable for use as structural material is called
timber.
Characteristics of timber-
o It should be hard and durable.
o It should be properly seasoned.
o It should be free from large knots.
o It should be from well matured tree.
o It should be capable of resisting weathering effect.

There are two types of seasoning method for timber i.e natural
seasoning and artificial seasoning.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF WOOD PRODUCTS ARE:-


VEENER-
• Veener is typically made up of a thin layer of natural hardwood,
that is then bonded to a stable composite base material.
• Veener is sliced off from tree like teak, rosewood, mahogany,
etc.
• Veener is need to be polished.
• Thickness- 4mm
• Size- 8’ x 4’
• Uses- To produce flat panels such as doors, tops and panels
for cabinets, parquet floors and parts of furniture.
• Also used to cover furniture of inferior quality for better look.

PLYWOOD-
• Plywood is a composite material manufactured from wood
veneer that are glued together with adjacent layers at right
angle.
• There are two types of plywood
a)Commercial plywood- Grade MR, IS 303
b)Waterproof plywood- IS710
• Grades of plywood are-
a) MR- Moisture resistant
b) BWR-Boiling water resistant
c) BWP-Boiling waterproof
• Thickness- 6mm to 18mm.
• Size- 8’ x 4’, 7’ x 4’
• Rate- 65 to 150 Rs per
sqft

MEDIUM DENSITY FIBRE BOARD (MDF)-


• These boards are made up of hardwood or softwood and other
vegetable fibres.
• These boards are generally stronger and denser than particle
board or plywood.
• It is available in commercial, HDHMR, and waterproof.

• Thickness-4mm, 6mm, 8mm, 12mm, 10mm, 15mm, 18mm.


• Size- 8’ x 4’
• Uses- To construct partition , wall panels ,Suspended ceiling,
table top, as insulating ,material for heat & sound, flush door.
• Rate-

BLOCK BOARD
• Block board consist of core made up of small timber blocks up
to 25mm thickness. The edges are glued and both sides are
covered with thin ply of 3mm thickness.
• Thickness- 19mm, 24mm
• Sizes- 8’x 4’, 7’ x 4’
• Uses- To make doors & flush doors with solid core, wall panels,
wardrobe shutters, tables, partition walls.
FIBRE BOARD
• The boards are made up of wood and other vegetable fibres.
The pulp of fibres is boiled and then pressed together in various
thickness.
• The various types of fibre board include hard board, insulating
board, plaster board.
• Thickness- 3 to 20mm.
• Uses- Hard fibre board can be used as wall slab, door board,
floor furniture & other decoration.

BATTEN BOARD-
• These boards have similar construction as that of theblock
board.
• The inner core is made up of 2 & 3 cm thick and sides are
covered with ply.
• They are light weight and strong.
• Uses- Used as door panels for shelf.

PARTICLE BOARD-
• Particle board is an engineered wood product manufactured
from wood chips and a synthetic resin or other suitable binder,
which is pressed and extruded.
• Particle board is cheaper ,denser and more uniform than
convential wood.
• Size- 8’ X 4’
• Thickness- 9mm, 15mm, 18mm, 25mm
• Uses- Extensively used in residential kitchen, playing role in
cabinets, shelving, countertops and floor underlayment.

FINISHING MATERIALS
• Finishing material are types of material used to complete a
construction or repair job.
• These materials are mainly used to make final touches of a job
look neat & tidy.
• Types of finishing material are-
Laminate, veneer, acrylic laminate, highlighter sheet etc.
LAMINATES
• Laminates are thermos-set composite sheets generally called
high pressure decorative laminate (HPL).
• These sheets are made of numerous layers of paper saturated
with thermosetting resins and bound by the combined action of
heat & high pressure.
USES- They can be used to laminate or cover the surface of any
appropriate material like chipboards, plywood, MDF boards, WPC
boards , walls etc.
In interior decoration applications like furniture, tabletops, counter
tops, study tables, kitchen cabinates etc.

• Acrylic laminate is a popular material known for its durability
and aesthetic appeal.
• They are heat and water resistant.
• Size- 8’ x 4’
• Thickness- 1.5mm
• Rate- 4000-5000
• Uses- In bathrooms,
kitchen etc.

HIGHLIGHTER SHEETS
• It refers to the material visually & texturally different from rest
of the surface that is installed into walls and floors to add
colour and texture.
• They are used for decoration purpose.
• Size- 8’ X 4’ , 8’X 2’
• Rate- 6500 to 7500, 3000 to 3500
