Brief Information about the student.
The student I observed in Adventist International Mission School (AIMS) is the only
international student in the class. She is about 10 years old and is Vietnamese. I have
observed her behaviours and learning styles. As grade 4 student, she mostly answers to the
teacher’s questions and rises hand before answering the question. She mostly works or
studies alone as other students less cooperate with her. She was left out alone as she was quiet
struggle in Mathematics. In Library Skill class, she worked alone on her project, and
sometime, she worked with her only male friend. I could observe that she works only alone or
work with him. Moreover, mostly in my observation, I have seen that she was delay and slow
to do something such as, return the materials, be ready to go somewhere, and doing
assignments. For doing the assignment, she was leftover most of the time because she was
quiet often absent because she frequently was ill, said her assistant teacher. Furthermore, I
have seen that she drew the picture and talkative while she was doing classwork or project.
She is supportive friends. For example, in Thai class, one of her classmates needs assistant,
she went and helped him even though she didn’t finish working on her own.
She is delay submitting assignment
During the lesson and class discussion, she pays fully attention to the teaching, but
was quite talkative during the class discussion. She was active in the class most of the time.
She could respond to the teacher because she heeds to the teacher instruction and was clever
students. However, because of her hobby which is drawing, she always left behind most of
the students to do her assignment or classwork. According to Santelli, B., Robertson, S.N.,
Larson, E.K., & Humphrey, S. (2020) Late assignments submissions are sometimes
generalized as procrastination. The procrastination can be defined as the intentional delay of a
task… While procrastination might be seen as a harmless trait, one of its main results are late
assignments. Because the teacher doesn’t punish or gives penalties for any late submission,
she didn’t fully concentrate on her assignments and talks to her friends or draws on the paper
within a period of given time. As Gonzalez, J. has explained about slow submitter,
“It’s easy enough to say we want all our students to work at their own pace, and in
most classrooms, some flexibility is built in to allow for this. Still, when a student
completes work at a significantly slower pace than his peers, sometimes taking three
or four times longer than everyone else, it can create problems for the student and his
teachers: Group work gets more complicated, whole-class instruction is limited, and
the student is too often put in an uncomfortable position as the one everyone else is
waiting for. Furthermore, working at this slow pace means the student is simply
putting too many hours in on schoolwork, time that could be spent playing, reading,
socializing, relaxing, or exploring other interests.”
Referring to per statement of the Gonalez, students are dealing with heave load of work in
their day at school and it is even harder for a teacher to manage it if they have a slow student
inside their class. From my perspective, the statement suggest that we must have a proper
procedure for intervention.
In this section, I am going to describe the strategies that teacher uses to deal with talkative
and slow learners from my observations. Usually, the teacher applies uniformity idea inside
the classroom. Given example, teacher will instruct steps by step at a normal pace regardless
of the students learning pace. Teacher will move to another instruction after majority of the
students able to catch up with teacher. If there are any students especially slow students, they
have to ask their friends. Refer to this particular student, she is not a slow learner but a
student who could not follow up with teacher instruction due to her talkative behavior
including putting other needs first, and sickness which is another issue. In addition, her
friends do not really want to cooperate with her so it is challenging for her to be on track with
teacher as the teacher only providing instruction instead of encouragement.
Per the sources (iccomipe, 2023) said that communication is a tool teacher can use in creative
learning environment for slow learners as a teacher to express their patience and empathy
toward them in learning. In communication, there are servals strategies that a teacher can
communicate to meet the students need. Individualized communication plan would be an
effective way to know the students learning needs, said the source (Effective Communication
Strategies – Classroom Management, 2019). As for the teacher, she will create a plan for a
particular student especially intended for the slow learning and talkative students to
communicate with. As such, teacher and students can learn what is the best way to
communicate for the learning to happen. This method will enable the both teacher and
students to know their preferred communication method.
Based on a sources (Nella, n.d.), encouraging the students to verbally expressing their needs
will be a great assistance to the teacher while creating a instruction. For example, teacher will
learn how to construct an effective lesson plan and a reinforcement for the learning to occur
in the classroom. Frequently, teacher will students are reluctant to mingle with other students
they don’t like. In fact, this is a useful platform for the teacher to the students, students to
student to communicate how they are experience or feeling in terms of learning, and
socializing. According to the report I have observed, this student does not have an
opportunity or channel to reach out or communicate with her other classmate although she
tries hard to be cooperative with her classmate. In reference, teacher applying this method
would be a platform in developing a communication channel with students and create an
effective learning environment in the meantime.
Conclusion
This student needs a proper channel to communicate her need to the teacher and friends
related to academic or social sector. The evidence from the observation has suggested that
isolation can delay learning performance as well as social well-being. Encouraging the
students to be expressive in terms of socializing and academic, as well as a teacher
developing a various and effective communication tool will be a useful platform while
creating a learning environment. Therefore, the suggestion provided above will be greatly
helpful to the student learning performance.
