Placement of Signs
• Usually placed on left side of the carriageway
• Optionally repeated on right side (sight distance requirements)
• On hill roads, placed towards valley side, under constraints only on hill
side
• Ground mountings should be 300 mm to 3 m from carriageway or paved
shoulder
• Gantry mounted – Min 7 m from nearest traffic lane; 1.8 m under
restricted condition or on ramps of interchanges
• Minimum headway for signs 2.0 m (2.1 m above footpath)

Placement of Signs
• Minimum headway for mandatory sign 1.0 m above paved surface
• Minimum clearance between two signs = 0.60 V for inter-urban roads
– Where, V = Design speed, km/h
– For urban roads, minimum 20 m distance between signs
• Speed limit repeater signs: @~(4 to 6) Speed; from 2.5km if placed on
alternate side and 5km if placed on same side
• No parking sign: within 25m of prohibition limits, @ < 30m repeated up to
100m
• Clear visibility distance of cautionary sign: 1.1V
• Distance of sign from Hazard = (1 to 3)V

• For series of bends ~ 50 to 100 m ahead of start of section
• For long steep gradients (10% and above) more than 500 m long ~ 30 m
ahead of the section
• Transition single to dual CW ~ 100m ahead; dual to single CW ~ 100 -
150m ahead
• Speed breaker ~ 50 to 60 m in advance
• Barrier, railway crossing ~ 200 m ahead
• U turn ~ 80 to 100 m ahead
