Button Sewing Lesson:

We show you the different ways to work with the

buttons, hooks, and clips, which may be very useful for you
at the sewing level of garments or for decorating bags,
brooches...

Position:

To fix the position of the buttons, place the garment in question on the
table, assemble the two parts that will be fastened, aligning them
lines from the center of the front (or back) of both parts: the right
on the left, for women's clothing, the opposite for men's.
If the buttonhole is horizontal, mark the point where the button goes by pinching.
vertically a pin in the center of the round part of the buttonhole; if the buttonhole is
Vertical, sew the button 2-3mm below the upper end.

How to sew buttons with a collar

It is advisable to use silk for buttonholes or sewing thread,

or better yet, special strong thread for buttons. Secure
the thread at the established point with some stitches
back made by the right. Holding the button with the
left hand, use its index finger to give to the
stitches the desired length for the neck or stem and pass several times the
thread from the fabric to the button holes, forming a bundle of threads together
at the base (A). Wrap the neck, winding the thread around it
several times (B). Finish by tying the thread backwards.

How to sew buttons without a collar

The button should be sewn on without making the collar.

when it only serves as decoration; otherwise, it would fall: it is
the case of the second row of buttons of a
cross garment.
It is useless to make a collar when sewing buttons that have a little ring.
metallic: since the latter wears out the thread, that is why it is important to use
resistant threads.
The photo shows the different decorative effects achieved by changing the
way to pass the thread through the holes

How to sew buttons with reinforcement

In unlined garments, it is advisable to reinforce the point where they are sewn.
buttons with a smaller button made of a different material (mother-of-pearl, crystal...) than
it will be sewn on the reverse, while the right button will have a collar
as usual (A). A second way to
reinforce the point where the button goes consists
in sewing at the same time, on the wrong side, a
square of lining or a piece of cotton tape
fold to match the fabric.

Twin buttons

By connecting the buttons in pairs, you can

obtain twins and, to make them, one can resort to
two very simple different procedures. With the
first system, just connect the buttons with different threads
that they pass through the holes of both; afterwards,
cover the bundle of threads that has formed at the point
festoon or eyelet point.

How to sew hooks

The brackets are made up of two elements,

one shaped like a hook (male) and another shaped like
ring (female), and they end in small rings each one,
that are used to sew them to the fabric. The position varies
according to the type of closure of the garment. When
the edges must match, sew the snaps on the reverse side of the fabric,
highlighting the female, while the male is somewhat hidden.
Completely cover the rings, then reinforce with two points.
transversal the male and female (A). When the closure of the garment is
overlaid, sew the male on the reverse side of the part that overlaps, inside, and the
female in the right of the part that goes underneath. The female can be replaced.
by a covered thread with a blanket stitch (B).

How to sew automatics

The automatics are made up of two elements of

metal, macho and female, that coincide, meeting each other.
They are especially suitable for flat closures and
hidden, which don't have to be too much
resistant. The automatic ones must be sewn on fabric
double reinforced: the male on the reverse side of the top of the closure and the
female at the bottom part. Sew it at regular intervals, passing the needle
several times through the holes and under the automatic, without allowing the stitch
go straight until covering each hole(A). We can cover the
automatic with a lining disc matching the fabric, in the male force the lining
on the until it perforates it.
