THE RABBIT AND THE LION

Augusto Monterroso

A famous psychoanalyst found himself one day in the middle of the jungle, semi-lost.

With the strength that comes from instinct and the desire for research, he easily managed to climb up to a
very tall tree, from which he could observe at his leisure not only the slow setting of the sun but
also the life and customs of some animals, which he compared time and again with those of
the humans.

As evening fell, she saw the Rabbit appear on one side, and the Lion on the other.

At first, nothing worth mentioning happened, but shortly after, both

animals felt their respective presences and, when they bumped into each other, each
he reacted as he had been doing since man was man.

The Lion shook the Jungle with its roars, majestically shook its mane as it was.

with great speed, he caught a glimpse into the eyes of the Lion, turned around, and ran away.

Upon returning to the city, the renowned Psychoanalyst published cum laude his famous treaty in
which demonstrates that the Lion is the most childish and cowardly animal in the Jungle, and the Rabbit the
braver and more mature: the Lion roars and makes gestures and threatens the universe driven by the
fear; the Rabbit notices this, knows its own strength, and withdraws before losing the
patience and deal with that extravagant and out of his mind being, whom he understands and that
after all, I hadn't done anything to him.
THE MONKEY WHO WANTED TO BE A SATIRICAL WRITER

Augusto Monterroso

In the jungle, there once lived a Monkey who wanted to be a satirical writer.

He studied a lot, but soon realized that he lacked what it took to be a satirical writer.
to meet people and applied to visit everyone and to go to the cocktails and to observe them by the
eye tail while they were distracted with the cup in hand.

As he was really funny and his agile tricks entertained the other animals, in
Any place was well received, and he perfected the art of being even better received.

There was no one who wasn't enchanted by his conversation, and when he arrived, he was treated to...
joy for both the Monas and their spouses and for the other inhabitants
of Selva, before whom, however contrary they may have been to him in international politics,
national or domestic, he was invariably understanding; always, of course, with the
the spirit of thoroughly investigating human nature and being able to portray it in their satires.

Thus came the moment when among the animals he was the most expert connoisseur of the
human nature, without missing anything.

So, one day he said I'm going to write against thieves, and he focused on the Magpie, and
he began to do it with enthusiasm and he enjoyed it and laughed and climbed with pleasure to the
trees for the things that occurred to him about the Magpie; but suddenly he reflected
that among the social animals that honored him, there were many Magpies and
especially one, and that they were going to be portrayed in his satire, no matter how gently he wrote it,
and he/she refrained from doing it.

Later he wanted to write about the opportunists, and he focused on the Serpent, who for
different means - auxiliaries in reality of his flattering art - always managed to maintain,
or to replace, improving their positions; but several friendly Serpents of hers, and
especially one, they would feel addressed, and he refrained from doing so.

Afterward, he wanted to satirize the compulsive workers and stopped at the Bee, which
he worked stupidly without knowing for what or for whom; but out of fear that his
friends of this genre, and especially one, became offended, ended up comparing her
favorably with the Cicada, who selfishly did nothing but sing and sing, showing off.
as a poet, and she gave up doing it.
Then he thought of writing against sexual promiscuity and directed his satire against the
Adulterous hens that were restless all day searching for Roosters; but so many of
he had received them and was afraid of hurting them, so he refrained from doing so.

Finally, he compiled a complete list of human weaknesses and flaws, and not.
he found whom to direct his batteries against, as they were all in the friends that
they shared their table and in it.

At that moment, he gave up being a satirical writer and began to embrace Mysticism and Love.
and those things; but as a result of that, it is already known how people are, everyone said that it had happened
crazy and they didn't receive him as well or with such pleasure anymore

THE BLACK SHEEP

Augusto Monterroso

In a distant country, many years ago, there was a black sheep. It was shot.

A century later, the remorseful flock erected an equestrian statue that remained very
good in the park.

Thus, from then on, whenever black sheep appeared, they were quickly passed through
the weapons so that future generations of common sheep could
to also practice in sculpture.
