HALLOWEEN

Halloween is a holiday that people in the United States celebrate on October

31 every year, no matter what day of the week it is. Even though Halloween
started from old religious traditions, today it is mostly about having fun.
People enjoy the decorations, costumes, sweets, and the fun feeling of the
day. Many people, both children and adults, take part in the celebration.

Before Halloween, many people carve a face or other design into a pumpkin.
A pumpkin is a big, round, orange vegetable. After making the design, they
put a candle inside the pumpkin. When the candle is lit, it becomes a Jack-O’-
Lantern. At night, the light shines through the design, and it looks bright and
a little spooky.

Besides carving pumpkins, people also decorate their homes. They often use
pictures or models of scary things, like ghosts, vampires, zombies, and
werewolves. Other decorations include spiders, bugs, webs, gravestones,
and anything else that looks creepy or strange. These things help make the
Halloween mood.

Some adults celebrate Halloween by going to parties. However, most

children celebrate by wearing costumes. These costumes can be scary,
funny, or based on characters from movies or cartoons. The children go from
house to house asking for candy. This is called trick-or-treating. When they
knock on a door, they say, “Trick or Treat!” If the house is giving candy, the
people inside usually give them one or more pieces of candy. It is a fun and
exciting night for many kids.
