5 KILLED AND 15 INJURED IN A TERRIBLE ACCIDENT

Kolkata, 18th March,2002 : A horrible road accident took the life of five persons today at Diamond
Harbour. The accident took place when a head-on collision made between a lorry and a bus. According
to the report of the eye-witness, the lorry going to overtake another lorry ahead of it with a high speed
collided the bus coming from the opposite direction. As a result, five passengers of the bus including the
lorry driver died on the spot and fifteen another including the driver and helper of the victimized bus
were injured. Among them the condition of the five was serious. They were rushed to the nearest local
hospital. Two were let off after first-aid. Both the bus and the lorry were greatly damaged. The agitated
mob blocked the road for half an hour. The police of the local station were informed. Normalcy was
restored with the intervention of them. Nobody has been arrested yet.

A SERIOUS BOAT CAPSIZED – 30 MISSING

Chinsurah, 28th October, 2002 : A serious boat accident took place at about 6 pm yesterday in Chinsurah
when a boat overloaded with 60 passengers was crossing the river Hooghly. According to the eyewitness
when the boat set off its journey with the passengers, it began to halt and its one side became crooked.
Then in the midst of the river it became capsized with its passengers. The cause of the accident was its
overcrowd. The police and the local people and some other boatmen rushed to the boat and began to
help the passengers. They rescued 30 passengers. The rest 30 were missing. The investigation was going
on.

A HORRIBLE BANK ROBBERY – 30 LAKHS LOOTED

Fairlie Place, 14th January,2009 : Last day at 10 am a gang of robbers invaded a Business House named
Fairlie Place and looted 30 lakhs. As per report of the eyewitnesses the three persons came by a black
car. They got down from car with gun in their hands. Each of them wore mask. They entered the office
surprising everybody standing there. They feared the shopkeepers and the manager and said, “They will
kill them if they say any word.”They continued their operation for half an hour and looted 30 lakhs from
the cashier at gunpoint. After the completion their mission they left the place hurriedly with the booty
by the same car. The police of the local station was informed. They reached the spot. None has been
arrested till now. Investigation was going on.

A Deadly Train Accident – 14 Died


Raigadh/Mumbai : Tragedy hit the Konkan Railway for the second time in a year, when 11 coaches of
the Mangalore-Kurla Matsyagandha Express jumped off the track on a bridge between Veer and
Karanjadi stations in Raigadh district on Wednesday morning killing 14 passengers and injuring 62.
Railway officials said at about 6.10 am a boulder rolled down a slope and landed on the track. Within
seconds, the engine collided with the boulder and the train derailed. Two bogies were dagling from the
bridge as the engine lay smashed on the ground below. Most of the injured were rescued from the
bogies., precariously hanging from the bridge.
The mishap had occurred at a place which was generally considered quite safe. However, the Railway
Safety Commissioner has ordered a probe into whether a technical fault or lax safety norms were to
blame.

A Bus Rammed Into A Lorry – 18 Injured

Amtala, 24-Pgs South, 14th Jan’09 : 18 were injured on Amtala Road, yesterday early in the morning
when a bus rammed into a lorry.
Police said the brakes of bus that was coming from Gangasagar with full of pilgrims failed when the
driver tried to stop near the Amtala bus stop around 4.30 am.
As the bus hit the private bus, it rammed into a lorry standing ahead of it, sources said.
“None died while 16 passengers of the bus and the driver and the helper of the lorry sustained injuries.
They were admitted into the Behala Hospital by the help of the local police,” the officials said.
Dilip Kumar, 40, who was driving the lorry said, “He heard a loud thud and felt a jerk. My head banged
against the steering. I almost blacked out. I felt a searing pain”
Officers of Baguiati Police Station have slapped a case of rush and negligent driving against the driver of
the bus. He was detained for some time before being allowed to go.

CTC Bus Hit Private Bus --- One Killed

A cyclist was killed and two people were injured on VIP Road Saturday evening when a government bus
rammed into a private bus which lurched forward and hit on Ola cab that dashed against another private
bus.
Police said the brakes of Calcutta Tramways Company bus on the Tollygung-Barasat route failed when
the driver tried to stop at the Kestopur bus stop to pick up passengers around 7.30 pm.
As the CTC bus hit the private bus, it rammed into the Ola cab ahead of it and swerved right and hit a
cyclist who was passing by and a sergeant posted at Kestopur, sources said.
“Nimai Bala, 30, died on the spot while another person riding with him sustained injuries,” the officials
said.
“The cyclist banged his head against a concrete slab,” Gopal Shil who was present on the spot said.
Shankar Kumar Projapoti, 50, who was driving the Ola cab, said he heard a loud thud and before he
could understand what happened his cab had rammed into the private ahead of him.
“As my cab hit against the bus, my head banged against the steering. I almost blacked out. I felt a
searing pain” he said.

SEVERE CYCLONE HIT COASTAL ORISSA

PURI, Aug. 12 : A severe cyclone hit coastal Orissa today leaving a trail of widespread havoc behind. The
coastal towns of Puri, Baleswar and Paradip were the worst affected. The cyclonic wind lashed across
the area at a speed of 80 km per hour around 6.45 pm. It resulted in huge tidal waves that swept across
the coastal towns. More than 10,000 people were rendered homeless. The train services have been
disrupted due to blockage of railway tracks by uprooted trees and severed overhead electric wires.
Though a prior warning of the storm had been sounded across the coastal towns, the fate of the
fishermen who had already ventured in the sea remains uncertain. The State Government has already
taken measure to provide immediate relief to the affected people and has pressed into services all the
state machineries to combat the calamity on war footing, reports TNN.

17. On Monday last at Sonarpur in the district of South 24 Parganas three persons, including a child

LIGHTNING KILLS THREE

SONARPUR, MARCH 6 : 3 persons including a child were killed in Sonarpur area after they were struck
by lightning. The victims Panchanan Mondal (45), Subhasini Mondal (36) and Aritra Mondal (11)
belonged to the same family. According to the sources, the parents along with their son were going to a
relative’s house when they were electrocuted near the paddy field at Majhergram. An eye-witness who
was tilling the land some five hundred feet away said that it seemed to him that a dazzling silver ball
came down from the cloudy sky with ear-splitting sound. When he rushed to the spot, he found the
victims lying dead on the road. The bodies were sent to Sonarpur Hospital for post mortem. The incident
cast a shadow of gloom over the family and the village.
