12
Chapter One:
Theoretical Part
Introduction
This chapter introduces the main aspects of ChatGPT, its genesis, development throughout

time and implications in academic settings. Moreover, the chapter provides a detailed description of

related points to the topic including AI and technological education.

1. The Fourth Industrial Revolution

The Fourth Industrial Revolution has brought about a radical transformation in how humans

interact with technology and data, driven by immense advancements in Artificial Intelligence,

robotics, and the Internet of Things.

This shift has fundamentally changed how we live and work, opening unprecedented avenues

for innovation. At the core of this revolution, AI has emerged as a driving force for progress, with

its multifaceted applications spanning military, industrial, economic, and educational domains.

Among the most prominent and impactful of these applications is ChatGPT technology, which

marks a significant technological turning point in human-computer interaction. (Smith & Johnson,

2020).

ChatGPT technology is characterized by its ability to understand and interpret natural language

and generate human-like responses, allowing users to obtain accurate and quick information, find

solutions to problems, and even create educational content. These capabilities have sparked

considerable interest in academic circles, particularly among university students, given the potential

benefits it offers in enhancing the learning experience and improving student engagement with

academic materials. (Smith & Johnson, 2020).

However, the rapid spread of ChatGPT raises fundamental questions about its impact on

students' academic performance in higher education. While it can serve as a powerful tool to

enhance comprehension and research, concerns arise regarding potential negative effects, such as

over-reliance, which might limit the development of critical thinking and independent research

14
skills, encourage academic dishonesty, or lead to reliance on unreliable sources. Therefore, it

becomes essential to understand how university students utilize this technology, identify their

motivations, the gratifications they achieve, and observe the actual pros and cons on their academic

performance.(Jee, 2017)

2. Definition of Chat GPT

ChatGPT is an AIChatbots developed by OpenAl. It was launched as a prototype on November

30, 2022. It captured attention for its detailed responses and articulate answers across many

domains of knowledge. Its uneven factual accuracy has been identified as a significant drawback.

Following the release of ChatGPT, Open AL's valuation was estimated at US$29 billion in 2023.

(Hernandez & Roberts, 2023).

Chatbots are Al systems that engage in spoken or written dialogue and commonly power

customer service sections of company websites as well as virtual assistants. ChatGPT stands apart

from other Chatbots because of its reinforcement learning from human feedback model, which

allows it to produce natural language, to understand when it has made mistakes. A free version of

ChatGPT is available on Open AL's website, and the company sells a programming interface to

organizations wishing to incorporate ChatGPT into their existing products and services. A paid

subscription model of the program is also available. (Fattouh, 2024)

3. Artificial Intelligence
It is a branch of Computer Science that pursues creating the computers or machines as

intelligent as human beings. It is the science and engineering of making intelligent machines,

especially intelligent computer programs. It is related to the similar task of using computers to

understand human intelligence, but Al does not have to confine itself to methods that are

biologically observableAccording the father of AI, John McCarthy (2022), it is "The science and

engineering of making intelligent machines, especially intelligent computer programs". p.22

15
AI is a way of making a computer, a computer-controlled robot, or a software think intelligently, in

the similar manner the intelligent humans think. AI is a branch of computer science looking at

understanding and applying technology that depends on computer simulation attributes human

intelligence(Rich et al., 2009).

1.1 Applications of AI
Al has applications in all fields of human study, such as finance and economics, environmental

engineering, chemistry, computer science, and so on. Some of the applications of Al are listed

below:

 Perception

 Machine vision

 Speech understanding

 Touch (tactile or haptic) sensation

 Robotics

 Natural Language Processing

 Natural Language Understanding

 Speech Understanding

 Language Generation

 Machine Translation

 Planning

 Expert Systems.

 Machine Learning

 Theorem Proving

 Symbolic Mathematics

 Game Playing

16
1.2 AI Technique:
AI research during the last three decades has concluded that Intelligence requires knowledge. To

compensate overwhelming quality, knowledge possesses fewer desirable properties.

 It is huge.

 It is difficult to characterize correctly.

 It is constantly varying.

 It differs from data by being organized in a way that corresponds to its application.

 It is complicated.

An Al technique is a method that exploits knowledge that is represented so that

 The knowledge captures generalizations that share properties, are grouped together, rather

than being allowed separate representation.

 It can be understood by people who must provide it even though for many programs bulk of

the data comes automatically from readings.

 In many Al domains, how the people understand the same people must supply the knowledge

to a program.

 It can be easily modified to correct errors and reflect changes in real conditions.

 It can be widely used even if it is incomplete or inaccurate.

It can be used to help overcome its own sheer bulk by helping to narrow the range of

possibilities that must be usually considered.(Rich et al., 2009)

4. The emergence and development of the ChatGPT technology:

In recent years, the fields of artificial intelligence and the treatment of natural language have

witnessed great developments. Among these developments is the technique of ChatGPT that has

sparked the interest of many specialists in this field, as this technique depends on artificial

intelligence, deep learning to analyze and understand the human language and generate natural texts

such as man. (Bhatia, 2023).

17
After the chat boot, ChatGPT is a linguistic model that depends on artificial intelligence and

aims to create a dialogue-like dialogue and can be returned to the beginning of ChatGPT to early

work on nervous language models and sequence models. The nervous language models were

presented in the early first decade of the twenty-first century as an alternative to N-Gram models

developed the conversation company Open Al 2010 in San Francisco by a group of entrepreneurs,

scientists and engineers who work in the field of artificial intelligence, then the developments

continued as shown in the following stages:

The first stage: On June 2018, at this stage, the company issued a GPT1 model and it contained.

On 11 million words and was characterized by his ability to create long and comprehensive texts in

a good manner.

The second stage: dated February 2019 at this stage, the company launched a GP12 model,

which is a larger model of GPT1 that contains one billion words and was able to create texts of

better and more quality.

The third stage: On the date of June 2020, at this stage, the company launched the GPT3

model, which is larger than GPT2. It was trained in huge amounts of data more than 75 billion

words, including books, web pages and other text sources, making it one of the largest and strongest

linguistic models.

The fourth stage: July 2021 At this stage the company launched the GPT STWBO model,

which is the upgrade of the GPT3 model, with new features such as support for other non -English

languages.

Fifth Stage: On March 14, 2023, Open Al -AL announced that the new GPT4 model has become

available to developers and subscribers of Chatgpt plus service with Microsoft asserting that the

Bing using the 4 GPT model.(Kenai, 2024)

18
4.1 Features of ChatGPT
ChatGPT has several features that make it a powerful Natural Language Processing (NLP)

system. It is able to understand the context of a conversation and generate appropriate responses It

can also generate responses in multiple languages, including English, Spanish, French, and German.

Additionally, ChatGPT is able to generate responses in different styles, such as formal, informal,

and humorous. (Bhatia, 2023).

5 Benefits of ChatGPT
5.1. Increased Efficiency
ChatGPT can help increase efficiency by automating conversations This can save time and

resources, as it eliminates the need for manual conversations. Additionally, ChatGPT can generate

responses quickly, allowing for faster conversations. (Bhatia, 2023).

With ChatGPT, businesses can quickly and accurately answer customer queries, freeing up

resources and providing a more personalized customer experience. Unlike traditional Al solutions,

ChatGPT is powered by a large-scale pre-trained language model, which enables it to quickly and

accurately understand customer questions and generate natural-sounding responses ChatGPT's

advanced NLP technology is unparalleled in its ability to provide businesses with a comprehensive,

personalized customer experience. This technology has helped numerous businesses improve their

customer service and increase their efficiency, allowing them to focus on more important tasks and

further grow their business. (Bhatia, 2023).

5.2. Improved Accuracy

ChatGPT can generate more accurate responses than manual conversations This is because it

is trained on a large dataset of conversations, allowing it to understand the context of a conversation

and generate appropriate responses. (Halaweh, 2023).

The ChatGPT Improved Accuracy (CGA) model is powerfulNLP system that utilizes a deep

learning-based AI architecture to produce accurate and meaningful conversations. By utilizing a

pre-trained model from OpenAl's GPT-3, CGA able to generate realistic and engaging conversations
19
based on given input. CGA's accuracy and generative capabilities are further enhanced by its ability

to learn from its own mistakes, allowing it to adapt to new contexts and produce more accurate

results. (Halaweh, 2023).

CGA has been tested in many domains, including chatbot conversations, customer service

conversations, and automated customer support. Recent research has shown that CGA has achieved.

An impressive level of accuracy and generative capabilities, outperforming other popular NIP

models in terms of accuracy, coherence, and readability. (Halaweh, 2023).

5.3. Cost Savings

ChatGPT is a novel language generation model developed by OpenAI that has the potential

to significantly reduce costs for businesses that rely on customer service chatbots. One of the key

benefits of ChatGPT is its ability to generate human.

6 Challenges of ChatGPT
6.1. Security Concerns.
As with any advanced machine learning system, ChatGPT raises potential security concerns.

One major concern is the risk of adversarial attacks, in which an attacker attempts to manipulate the

model by providing malicious inputs that cause it to produce incorrect or undesirable outputs

Another concern is the potential for ChatGPT to be used to spread misinformation or propaganda,

particularly if it is integrated into platforms that have a wide reach such as social media.

Additionally, ChatGPT's ability to generate human-like text raises the risk of impersonation

and identity theft. It is important for businesses and organizations to carefully consider these risks

and implement appropriate measures to mitigate them when using ChatGPT or similar technologies.

6.2. Limited Capabilities

Although ChatGPT is a powerful language generation model, it does have certain limitations. One

major limitation is that it is only able to generate text based on the input provided to it, and it does

not have access to external information or the ability to browse the internet. This means. That it is

20
unable to provide accurate or up-to-date information on a wide range of topics, and it may not be

able to generate responses to complex or unconventional questions. Another limitation is that

ChatGPT is trained on a large dataset of human language, and as a result it may produce responses

that contain based or offensive language. It is important for users of ChatGPT to be aware of these

limitations and to use the model appropriately. (Deng & Lin, 2022(.

Conclusion
This chapter discussed the general facts about ChatGPT as a tool, method, and a platform to

collect and analyze data, a medium to enhance learning and teaching and also to improve speaking,

listening and writing skills.

21
Chapter Two
Findings and Discussion
2.1.The curriculum used

It is the nature of the topic that determines the appropriate approach to the study, which

should be used, so it was the most appropriate approach to analyzing and revealing the aspects of

this study or the subject, Investigating advantages and disadvantages of ChatGPT on English

Students Academic Performance. It is the mixed-method approach.

• The concept of descriptive approach:

It is an attempt to reach the accurate and detailed knowledge of a problem or existing phenomenon,

to reach a better and more accurate understanding or setting its own policies and procedures. (Al -

Mahmoudi, 2019, p. 46)

• Justifications for using a mixed-method approach:

Because it is considered one of the most accurate curricula used in scientific researches, and

is not limited to collecting information and facts only, but also goes beyond the recording of

indicators and indications that enable the researcher to extract the data collected and because the

current study aims to describe the effects of ChatGPT technology, which leads to its use as it

analyzes and organized scientific explanation and photographing it quantitative by collecting data

and information through the data collection tools and then analyzing this data And come up with

results, then answer the questions included in the research objectives.

• The concept of questionnaire:

It is a set of written questions that promise with the intention of obtaining information or

opinions of the respondents about a specific phenomenon or position, and the questionnaire is one

of the tools used to collect data that requires obtaining information, beliefs, perceptions or opinions

of individuals, one of the most important characteristics of the questionnaire is to provide a lot of

time and effort on the researcher. (Muhammad Obaidat et al., 1999, p. 63)

23
•The justifications for its use:

Because it allows collection of reliable quantity data from a large and effective sample, which

facilitates the analysis of the results.

2.2 Duration on field

Conclusion
The results of the questionnaire show that Chatgpt technology has become a central and

integrated tool in the academic environment at the University of Kassdi Merbah, where the vast

majority of students indicate its intensive and repeated use of various academic purposes ranging

from searching for information, understanding concepts and reviewing texts.

Students agreed that using Chatgpt contributes effectively to achieving academic goals and

provides them with great time and effort, which reflects a wide positive awareness of its benefits in

promoting educational efficiency.

However, this integration is not without its challenges, as a noticeable percentage of students

indicates that they are facing difficulties when using this technique, which highlights the need to

understand these obstacles to ensure the maximum benefit from ChatGPT and its optimal support

for the academic march.

31
Furthermore, teachers agree that ChatGPT has its advantages that go in harmony with what

students have answered, but also has some grave disadvantages including absence of authenticity.

The lack of accuracy in information despite the ability of ChatGPT to provide extensive

information, it may be inaccurate or old information, which requires students to always verify

sources and references.

32
General Conclusion
This study concluded that integrating ChatGPT technology into the academic environment

at the University of Kasdi Merbah in Ouargla has had varied effects on the academic performance

of English students. On one hand, the results showed that ChatGPT is a powerful tool that enhances

understanding, facilitates access to information, and saves time and effort, which significantly

supports students' academic progress. ChatGPT's ability to provide instant feedback, offer precise

linguistic resources, and generate customized learning materials all contribute to enriching the

learning experience, increasing student engagement, and building their self-confidence, especially

in areas like improving writing skills and generating ideas.

However, significant challenges emerged regarding the optimal use of this technology and

dealing with its potential negative aspects, which might affect the quality of authentic learning and

critical thinking. Over-reliance on ChatGPT can lead to "intellectual laziness" and reduce students'

ability to engage in complex thought processes, such as deep analysis and self-assessment. There

are also concerns about academic plagiarism and the inability to distinguish between original work

and AI-generated content, requiring careful handling to ensure academic integrity.

The study emphasizes the urgent need to develop comprehensive strategies for Integrating

ChatGPT effectively and responsibly. These strategies should include providing appropriate training

for both students and faculty members. Students need to learn how to use ChatGPT as a supportive

tool, not a replacement for independent thinking, with an emphasis on critical thinking skills,

information verification, and the ability to formulate their own ideas. For faculty members, they

should be equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to design learning tasks that leverage

ChatGPT's capabilities while maintaining academic quality and integrity standards.

Recommendations:

1. Develop Clear Guidelines for Ethical Use:

34
• The University of Kasdi Merbah should establish clear and detailed guidelines and

policies on the acceptable use of ChatGPT in academic tasks, especially in English language

courses. These guidelines should specify when and how students can use the tool to assist with

writing, and what constitutes a violation of academic integrity.

• Encourage transparency, requiring students to disclose their use of ChatGPT in their

written work and specify the parts where the tool was used.

2. Foster Critical Thinking and Authentic Learning:

• Design writing assignments that require students to apply critical thinking and deep

analysis rather than merely producing texts. These tasks could include analyzing complex texts,

formulating original arguments, or developing creative solutions to specific problems.

• Encourage students to use ChatGPT as a tool for generating initial ideas or receiving

quick feedback, but emphasize the necessity of critically reviewing and refining the generated

content, adding their personal touch and unique analyses.

• Integrate intensive training on higher-order thinking skills, such as evaluation, synthesis,

and analysis, so that students do not solely rely on information provided by ChatGPT.

3. Provide Comprehensive Training Programs:

• Organize regular workshops and training courses for both students and faculty members

in the English department on the effective and ethical use of ChatGPT and other AI tools.

• These courses should focus on best practices for using these tools to improve writing

skills, research, and text comprehension, while emphasizing the avoidance of over-reliance.

• Equip faculty members with the necessary tools and strategies to detect AI-generated

content and design assessments that minimize opportunities for cheating.

4. Adapt Teaching and Assessment Methods:

35
• Encourage instructors to re-evaluate their teaching and assessment methods to align with

the presence of ChatGPT. This could involve focusing on research projects that require reviewing

multiple sources, oral presentations, or exams that demand practical application of concepts rather

than mere recall of information.

• Customize assignments to reduce opportunities for using ChatGPT to obtain ready-made

answers, such as requesting personal analyses or unique perspectives based on students' experiences

and knowledge backgrounds.

5. Continuous Research and Follow-up:

• Encourage further studies and research at the University of Kasdi Merbah to assess the

long-term effects of ChatGPT on the academic performance of English students and identify best

practices for its integration into curricula.

• Establish an advisory committee composed of academics, technology experts, and

students to regularly review and update policies and guidelines related to AI use, based on the latest

developments and challenges.

By adopting these recommendations, the University of Kasdi Merbah can ensure that

ChatGPT technology serves the goals of higher education and contributes to enhancing the

academic performance of English students in a sustainable and responsible manner, while

preserving the essence of authentic learning and critical thinking.
