Abstract
This study investigates the advantages and disadvantages of ChatGPT and how it could
influence students’ level of English at the University of Kasdi Merbah,Ouargla. The study
attempts to determine the most important advantages that students earn from using ChatGPT,
assessing the extent of the effect of ChatGPT on the quality of the productive academic
content. The study adopted a mixed-method approach, using a questionnaire handed out to
twenty (20) teachers at the University of Kasdi Merbah, Results revealed that ChatGPT has
become a central and integrated tool in the academic routine for English students at the
University of Kasdi Merbah. Sudents have agreed that the use of ChatGPT contributes
effectively to Improve their academic writing and consider It a time saver that could
reformulate Ill-structured sentences into well-structured ones. However, this merger was not
without its challenges, as a large part of students face certain difficulties when using this
technology in their academic tasks. Moreover, teachers believe that misusing ChatGPT will
lead to dire consequences that decline critical thinking, and impede students to develop
linguistic skills.
Intelligence (AI) serving as a driving force reshaping various aspects of our lives. At the core of this
evolution, ChatGPT stands out as a leading deep language model, enabling seamless interaction
with intelligent systems through text and conversations. This technology has brought about
significant transformation in diverse fields, from scientific research to education, offering valuable
insights and assistance to students and researchers, particularly in comprehending complex concepts
generating ideas, and enhancing communication – its overall impact, especially on academic
performance, warrants in-depth study. This research aims to shed light on the advantages and
disadvantages of using ChatGPT and its effect on the academic performance of students at Kasdi

The dissertation is divided into two chapters, a theoretical chapter dedicated to definitional
foundations of the topic that covers sections related to Artificial Intelligence (its definition,
emergence, types, and applications), ChatGPT technology (its definition, uses, advantages, and
risks), and the impact of ChatGPT on scientific researches and education (its positive and negative
effects on the educational process). On the other hand, a practical chapter involves presentations,
analysis, and discussion of the empirical data collected. Based on this analysis, the general findings
of the study will be derived, and finally, the concluding proposals and recommendations will be

This shift has fundamentally changed how we live and work, opening unprecedented avenues
for innovation. At the core of this revolution, AI has emerged as a driving force for progress, with
its multifaceted applications spanning military, industrial, economic, and educational domains.
Among the most prominent and impactful of these applications is ChatGPT technology, which
marks a significant technological turning point in human-computer interaction. (Smith & Johnson,
2020).
ChatGPT technology is characterized by its ability to understand and interpret natural language
and generate human-like responses, allowing users to obtain accurate and quick information, find
solutions to problems, and even create educational content. These capabilities have sparked
considerable interest in academic circles, particularly among university students, given the potential
benefits it offers in enhancing the learning experience and improving student engagement with
However, the rapid spread of ChatGPT raises fundamental questions about its impact on
students' academic performance in higher education. While it can serve as a powerful tool to
enhance comprehension and research, concerns arise regarding potential negative effects, such as
over-reliance, which might limit the development of critical thinking and independent research

skills, encourage academic dishonesty, or lead to reliance on unreliable sources. Therefore, it
becomes essential to understand how university students utilize this technology, identify their
motivations, the gratifications they achieve, and observe the actual pros and cons on their academic
performance.(Jee, 2017)

As with any advanced machine learning system, ChatGPT raises potential security concerns.
One major concern is the risk of adversarial attacks, in which an attacker attempts to manipulate the

Another concern is the potential for ChatGPT to be used to spread misinformation or propaganda,
particularly if it is integrated into platforms that have a wide reach such as social media.
Additionally, ChatGPT's ability to generate human-like text raises the risk of impersonation
and identity theft. It is important for businesses and organizations to carefully consider these risks
and implement appropriate measures to mitigate them when using ChatGPT or similar technologies.

General Conclusion
This study concluded that integrating ChatGPT technology into the academic environment
at the University of Kasdi Merbah in Ouargla has had varied effects on the academic performance
of English students. On one hand, the results showed that ChatGPT is a powerful tool that enhances
understanding, facilitates access to information, and saves time and effort, which significantly
supports students' academic progress. ChatGPT's ability to provide instant feedback, offer precise
linguistic resources, and generate customized learning materials all contribute to enriching the
learning experience, increasing student engagement, and building their self-confidence, especially
However, significant challenges emerged regarding the optimal use of this technology and
dealing with its potential negative aspects, which might affect the quality of authentic learning and
critical thinking. Over-reliance on ChatGPT can lead to "intellectual laziness" and reduce students'
ability to engage in complex thought processes, such as deep analysis and self-assessment. There
are also concerns about academic plagiarism and the inability to distinguish between original work
The study emphasizes the urgent need to develop comprehensive strategies for Integrating
ChatGPT effectively and responsibly. These strategies should include providing appropriate training
for both students and faculty members. Students need to learn how to use ChatGPT as a supportive
tool, not a replacement for independent thinking, with an emphasis on critical thinking skills,
information verification, and the ability to formulate their own ideas. For faculty members, they
should be equipped with the knowledge and tools necessary to design learning tasks that leverage
Recommendations:
34
• The University of Kasdi Merbah should establish clear and detailed guidelines and
policies on the acceptable use of ChatGPT in academic tasks, especially in English language
courses. These guidelines should specify when and how students can use the tool to assist with
written work and specify the parts where the tool was used.
• Design writing assignments that require students to apply critical thinking and deep
analysis rather than merely producing texts. These tasks could include analyzing complex texts,
• Encourage students to use ChatGPT as a tool for generating initial ideas or receiving
quick feedback, but emphasize the necessity of critically reviewing and refining the generated
and analysis, so that students do not solely rely on information provided by ChatGPT.
• Organize regular workshops and training courses for both students and faculty members
in the English department on the effective and ethical use of ChatGPT and other AI tools.
• These courses should focus on best practices for using these tools to improve writing
skills, research, and text comprehension, while emphasizing the avoidance of over-reliance.
• Equip faculty members with the necessary tools and strategies to detect AI-generated
35
• Encourage instructors to re-evaluate their teaching and assessment methods to align with
the presence of ChatGPT. This could involve focusing on research projects that require reviewing
multiple sources, oral presentations, or exams that demand practical application of concepts rather
answers, such as requesting personal analyses or unique perspectives based on students' experiences
• Encourage further studies and research at the University of Kasdi Merbah to assess the
long-term effects of ChatGPT on the academic performance of English students and identify best
students to regularly review and update policies and guidelines related to AI use, based on the latest
By adopting these recommendations, the University of Kasdi Merbah can ensure that
ChatGPT technology serves the goals of higher education and contributes to enhancing the
