MODULE NAME: COMPUTER APPLICATION

MODULE CODE: CIT-CAP-221
DUE DATE: 22 JULY,2025
1. APPLICATIONS OF THE INTERNET IN BUSINESS

The internet plays a vital role in modern business by making operations faster, easier, and more
cost-effective. It improves how businesses connect, transact, and manage data.

One key area where the internet has made a significant impact is in marketing and advertising.
Before the internet, businesses used newspapers, posters, and flyers to advertise, which reached
fewer people and was expensive. Now, with the internet, businesses use social media platforms
like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube to advertise, which is cheaper and reaches many people
instantly.

Another important application of the internet is in e-commerce, which refers to the buying and
selling of goods and services over the internet. It involves online platforms like websites, mobile
apps, and social media. With increased internet access, businesses can now promote products,
accept payments, and manage deliveries digitally (Chaffey, 2019). Platforms like Amazon,
Alibaba, and eBay support large-scale operations, while Shopify helps small and medium-sized
enterprises (SMEs) join the digital market. E-commerce improves customer experience by
allowing 24/7 shopping and enables businesses to reach global markets.

The internet has also revolutionized how businesses handle banking and payments. With online
banking and mobile money services like Mpamba or Airtel Money, businesses can now make
payments instantly using their phones or computers. This has made business transactions
quicker, safer, and easier. Previously, businesses had to go to the bank to send or receive money,
which was time-consuming and sometimes unsafe.

In terms of data storage, cloud computing is a major internet application in business. In the past,
businesses stored their data in bulky files, which were often destroyed or lost. With the rise of
the internet, businesses can now store data efficiently and permanently in applications like
Google Drive and OneDrive. These platforms offer secure and user-friendly solutions. Data can
be retrieved at any time and is protected from destruction or unauthorized changes. This
advancement improves data security, increases productivity, and reduces the risks and costs of
traditional storage(Person Learning Solutions, 2011).

Moreover, the internet is widely used for information access and research in business. It plays a
vital role in market research by helping businesses gather information on market trends,
customer preferences, and competitor activities. Tools such as Google Trends, Statista, and
social media platforms are commonly used. The internet also supports product development and
innovation by providing customer feedback and showcasing global innovations.

Additionally, businesses utilize the internet for data collection and analysis. Platforms like
Google Forms, Typeform, and web tracking tools help collect information directly from
customers. Cloud-based analysis tools, such as Microsoft Power BI, are also used to collect,
organize, and analyze data, leading to better decision-making and improved business strategies.

The internet also enhances communication and collaboration within and across businesses. It
enables the fast exchange of information over long distances, thus breaking geographical
barriers. Communication tools like Gmail facilitate professional interactions, while platforms
such as Google Meet allow for virtual meetings, saving time and promoting collaboration
between distant business locations or partners.

Furthermore, the internet has significantly transformed business operations in the area of
customer support. Online customer service allows businesses to assist their clients more
efficiently through various digital platforms such as live chat, websites, email, and social media.
Many companies now use chatbots and automated systems to provide 24/7 service, addressing
common inquiries instantly and reducing the need for human intervention. Additionally, support
ticket systems and self-service portals enable customers to find solutions on their own or track
the progress of their requests. This not only improves customer satisfaction but also helps
businesses manage resources more effectively and maintain strong relationships with their clients
(Lee, 2017).

In conclusion, the internet has greatly improved how businesses operate by making processes
faster, easier, and more efficient, as it supports key activities like marketing, communication,
data management, and customer service.

2. DANGERS OF THE INTERNET

The internet, despite offering many benefits, also comes with several dangers. Some of the most
significant risks are explained below.

To begin with, cyberbullying is a major concern. Cyberbullying involves bullying others using
the internet, such as through email, social media, or other communication methods (Morley &
Parker, 2016). It usually happens anonymously, where the sender of the messages is unknown.
This form of bullying mostly affects teenagers, who may reveal other people’s secrets or say
harmful things about a person or their relatives. Such behavior can cause victims to feel
depressed, lose confidence, and even consider or commit suicide. In response, some countries
have initiated anti-bullying policies and campaigns in schools and districts, while new laws have
been introduced to address this problem.

Another danger related to the internet is internet addiction, which is linked to excessive use of
social media, gaming, and video streaming. This addiction impacts mental health by leading to
anxiety, depression, and reduced productivity. It also hinders focus on important tasks and
negatively affects relationships, social life, and overall well-being. Especially for students,
internet addiction often results in poor academic performance and a lack of interest in physical
activities.

The internet also exposes users to online scams and fraud, which pose serious risks.
Cybercriminals use fake websites, emails, or messages to trick people into sharing personal or
financial information. This can lead to identity theft, loss of money, or unauthorized access to
bank accounts. Common scams include phishing, fake job offers, lottery fraud, and investment
scams. These scams are often successful due to lack of awareness or desperation. Therefore,
internet users must be cautious and verify sources before sharing sensitive data online(Federal
Trade Commission, 2023).

Exposure to inappropriate content is another danger of the internet. Children, in particular, can
be exposed to unsuitable material such as violent videos or explicit images, which may harm
their well-being. For example, watching excessive violent content can desensitize children to
aggression, potentially influencing their behavior and emotional responses. Encountering content
that is not age-appropriate can also negatively impact children’s development and mental
health(Livingstone & Smith, 2014).

One of the major threats on the internet is the spread of misinformation and fake news. The
dissemination of inaccurate or misleading information, often via websites and social media,
makes misinformation and fake news one of the internet’s biggest dangers(Lazer et al., 2018).
This can result in confusion, fear, damage to one’s reputation, and misinformation about crucial
matters such as politics, safety, and health. Fake news has the potential to spread rapidly and
reach a wide audience before being corrected, which can have serious social and individual
consequences.

In conclusion, while the internet offers many benefits, it also comes with serious risks. Users
must exercise caution and use it responsibly to stay safe.
