How Ananse Tricked His Children

Kweku Ananse has a wife and six children. Anytime his wife asked him for money, he beat her. His wife
Okondor, left him because he was stingy. She left and went to stay in her father’s house. Two of her
children went with her. Ananse went to his father-in-law’s house and brought the children back. He also
beat them to serve as a warning to the rest of the children.

Kweku Ananse did not know how to prepare any food. There was too much salt in the first soup he
prepared. His children could not eat. He beat them. The second soup he prepared had too much pepper.
His two little children cried after eating. His friend Gbagla advised him to go and bring Okondor back.
Ananse was very proud. He refused to go and bring his wife.

Ananse suffered a lot when his wife left him. He could do very little work when he went to the farm. He
had to take a long time in preparing food on the farm. Kweku Ananse went to Okondor with plenty gifts.
Okondor took the gifts and did not return. Kweku Ananse became sad an lazy.

One year, there were poor rains and food became scarce. There was little to eat. There was hunger
everywhere. Many people grew very lean. Kweku Ananse cooked six fingers of plantain. He gave all to
the six children. There was nothing for him. Then one of the children said, “Dada are you not going to
eat?” He said, “I have given all the food to you. I know I’ll die soon. Do you all want your father to die?”
The children said that they would not want their father to die. Each of them gave half of their finger of
plantain to Kweku Ananse. Ananse had three fingers and all the children had three fingers in all.

Anytime he shared food, he would ask, “Do you want your father to die?” All the six children would say,
“We will not”.
