Team returns for competitive season
By SHANNON CAULFIELD
The Shamong Sun
Seneca High Schools mens
soccer team will be returning for
a competitive fall season with a
handful of returning starters and
hopes of advancing further than
the semifinals in the state tourna-
ment.
Its kind of nice that up the
middle we have a lot of strength
returning, said head coach Sam
Maira.
The Golden Eagles are coming
back from a successful 2011 sea-
son and a record of 13-4, in addi-
tion to the last three of the five
years clinching the division title.
The team is anticipating a suc-
cessful run to the state champi-
onship.
Were looking to make states
and to make the coaches tourna-
ment. At midseason, they pick the
top 16 teams and put them in a
tournament. Last year we got in
there and won our first coaches
tournament, Maira said.
Fifteenth-seeded Seneca upset
second-seeded Williamstown to
take first.
We kind of fly under the radar
a little bit because in our district
are Lenape, Cherokee and
Shawnee, and theyre perennially
very good teams. We kind of fly
under the radar a little bit, so I
think well surprise teams this

Camp Ockanickon offers before
and after-school programs for kids
The 200 Club plans Sept. 11 ceremony
Providing youth with opportu-
nities to continue to learn and en-
gage in meaningful activities at
the end of the school day can
boost their academic success.
To help motivate and inspire
kids to learn, Camp Ockanickon
offers before and after school pro-
grams to school-aged children
throughout the Medford, Medford
Lakes and Shamong school dis-
tricts. The programs are based in
the schools themselves, offering
parents convenience and afford-
ability, while providing children
with a safe and secure environ-
ment.
The programs combine home-
work help with play and age-ap-
propriate activities, all super-
vised by the trained and experi-
enced staff of Camp Ockanickon,
a trusted 106-year-old non-profit
organization serving more than
10,000 children annually through
a variety of rewarding programs.
During the school year, 15.1
million U.S. children are left un-
supervised after 3 p.m., according
to the Afterschool Alliance, a non-
profit public awareness advocacy
organization.
With the start of the new
school year, Camp Ockanickon
encourages parents to make sure
that children are involved in safe,
educational experiences after
school.
At Ockanickon, we believe all
kids deserve the opportunity to
discover who they are and what
they can achieve, said Keith Van-
Derzee, CEO. In our before and
after school programs, youth are
cultivating values, skills and rela-
tionships and have an extra sup-
port system that encourages
them to achieve success.
Studies show participation in
before and after school programs
helps boost school attendance and
academic performance and re-
duces gaps in academic achieve-
ment among children from disad-
vantaged households.
YMCA before and after school
programs promote a love for
learning, social and emotional de-
velopment, character and creativ-
ity. In Camp Ockanickons after-
school programs youth receive
help with homework, team build-
ing and communication skills ac-
tivities, craft projects, special
events, literacy help, and most im-
portantly, encouragement and
care from professional staff who
strive to be role models. Financial
assistance is available to those in
need, to ensure every child and
teen has the opportunity to learn
and grow.
For more information about
Camp Ockanickons before and
after school programs, please con-
tact MaryAnn Birchler, Schools
Out Director, at 609-654-8225 or

year for sure, Maira said.
The top scorer last season, Kent Dim-
ming, who netted a total of 22 goals, gradu-
ated, leaving the team without a specific
driving offensive leader.
We dont have anyone returning with
huge numbers, but we have a lot of experi-
ence so its going to be pretty balanced. We
have a lot of guys capable of scoring multi-
ple goals, Maira said.
Three seniors will be making a return to
the team this fall goalkeeper Ryan Oyola,
central defender Alex McGrainer and mid-
filder Tom Coyne. Additionally, four rising
players will make their varsity debut to the
team, reinforcing the leadership Maira is
looking for in addition to the balance on
the field.
We have a lot of returning guys so I feel
like were going to play well together, said
Coyne. We lost a lot of seniors, but we had
a lot of depth on the bench last year so we
have a lot of seniors and varsity players in
our starting lineup.
Seneca was shutout by Timber Creek in
its final game of the season during the
semifinal round of the NJSIAA state tour-
nament. The team was eliminated from the
Division 3 states race.
Timber Creek and Bishop Eustace are
our biggest rivals, said McGrainer. We
want to beat Timber Creek.
Im really impressed with the kids and
the attitude. I remember when they came
in as freshmen, and all of a sudden they be-
come leaders. They go from boys to men so,
thats what Im excited about. Their enthu-
siasm and how they came back prepared
and in leadership roles, said Maira.
The Golden Eagles open their season
versus the Cherry Hill West Lions on Sept.
7 at 4 p.m. at home.

W
ere pretty sure that Repub-
lican Party leaders took a
close look at speeches before
they were delivered at the recent con-
vention. Which makes us wonder how
Chris Christies remarks actually saw
the light of day.
Make no mistake, the governor de-
livered a bang-up speech. He spoke of
values, sacrifice and the future of the
nation and his party. He had people
cheering. If theres one thing Christie
does well, its deliver a speech.
But, in his remarks, that Romney
guy seemed to be an afterthought. It
took a long time for the governor to
even mention the GOP nominee. There
was a lot of stuff about Christie, his
views and his vision, but not a lot
about trying to get Mitt Romney elect-
ed president in November.
Christie took some heat for his re-
marks the day after he delivered them.
Were guessing the heat didnt bother
him one bit.
Christies blunt, tell-it-like-he-sees-it
approach is one of the things people
like about the guy. In an era when al-
most every other politician tailors his
or her speech to whomever they are
speaking to, Christie never leaves a
doubt in anyones mind about what he
thinks. Its not always what people
want to hear. But theres something to
be said for a politician not worrying so
much about being popular and just
speaking his mind.
The governors speech certainly was
an accurate introduction to the rest of
the nation. And it set him up well for a
future presidential run perhaps as
early as 2016 should President Obama
win re-election.
Love him or hate him, Christie defi-
nitely would be an interesting presi-
dential candidate. No one will accuse
him of pandering to special interests.
No one will wonder where he stands on
issues or what he would do if elected.
In these days, where politicians
promise one thing and deliver another,
Christies openness and bluntness set
him apart.
in our opinion
Hi, my name is Chris
Governors convention address sets him up for a future presidential bid
Christie in 2016?
The governors speech at the
Republican National Convention last
week was long on vision and short on
politicking. That might not be great for
Mitt Romney, but it could serve Christie
well in four years.
