The Pinelands gears up
for a festive season

The holiday season is here again, and before you know it,
the trees of the Pinelands will be dressed up with decorative
lights and festive ornaments.
From the traditional Thanksgiving high school football
Turkey Bowls kicking off tomorrow morning to the always
popular Dickens Festival, there is something for everyone to
enjoy.
Each year, the holiday season seems to go by faster and
faster, so be sure to make this one count by joining in on the
holiday fun that the area has planned for folks of all ages.

Tabernacle Tree Lighting

Following a successful inaugural event last year, Tabernacle Township will have its second tree lighting ceremony on
Dec. 4 at 7 p.m. on the grounds of Town Hall.

seeded 13th out of 16 teams in its

team advanced even further. Seeded No. 10 in the South Jersey

Group III tournament, the Golden
Eagles upset three higher-seeded
teams on the road and advanced
all the way to the sectional championship game, where they came
one goal short of completing
their Cinderella run, as they lost
to No. 4 seed Toms River South, 32, in double overtime on Nov. 12.
Head coach Ronald Jensen believes a number of factors played
into Senecas surprise playoff
run. He felt the team was always
better than its record and seeding
indicated because it played a difficult schedule in the Olympic Conference.
We played good teams, we
played a really difficult schedule, Jensen said. The other
teams we play that have mediocre
.500 records, like Cherry Hill East
and Timber Creek, theyre good
teams, too. The record doesnt
quite indicate.

Seneca was seeded No. 10 after

finishing the regular season with
an 8-7-2 record. However, the
Golden Eagles had played well in
the weeks leading up the playoffs,
winning four of their last six regular season games.
Jensen said a Sept. 30 game
against Washington Township
was the turning point for his
team this season.
We came out and scored two
goals in the first minute and a
half, Jensen said. Were up 3-0
at halftime and we ended up losing the game 4-3. Thats when
they realized we can play with a
team like Washington Township,
but we cant have breakdowns.
The Golden Eagles had to overcome a few obstacles along the
way. Injuries left Seneca with just
three seniors on the roster late in
the season. Despite this, Jensen
said the seniors leadership was
important down stretch.

spirits up and keeping the team
focused was rewarding for me to
see as a coach, Jensen said.
Seneca didnt go into its playoff
opener against No. 7 seed Mainland with the mentality of an underdog. The teams strong finish
to the regular season gave it confidence in the playoffs.
Instead of saying we were the
underdog, we took the opposite
idea, Jensen said. We said we
may be seeded 10th, but were no
underdog. Going in with that
mentality, I told the girls thats
what we worked for. Dont be surprised that were here.

team continued its run through
the SJSL with a 6-0 win against a
tough Hammonton team. That
brings its record to 8-0.
The goal scorers for the Warriors were Luke Leach (2), Cian

There are people throughout New Jersey who could use your help
omorrow officially kicks off
the holiday season. Thanksgiving is here, and with it comes
family, friends, food and football.
In elementary schools across the
country this week, children will be
taught the history of Thanksgiving.
Some will celebrate it by making pilgrim and Indian hats out of paper and
by having a feast of their own. Theyll
be asked what they are thankful for
and share it with the class.
At most of our homes on Thursday,
well be sitting around a TV or at a
dinner table or keeping a close eye on
the oven so we dont burn the turkey.
Well be welcoming relatives, near and
far, to gather for a day where we can
also give thanks for all we have.

Edison, recently released a report that
suggests that 2.8 million people in the

Garden State are living in poverty. A

family of four living in this state
would have to earn $60,000 per year to
be considered above the groups poverty line. Thats because, according to its
President Melville Miller, the group
defines poverty as being significantly
deprived of any one particular need
after considering practical costs for
everything from food, clothing,
health care, housing and transportation.
Its expensive to live in our state
we know that. And people are in need
throughout our state, not just in its
urban centers.
So be thankful for what you have,
and help those who arent in the same
position as you are. Do more for others
this holiday season. Itll be the best gift
you can give.

Tree lighting to take place rain or shine

I am so proud to be involved in this
project again this year after the success of
last year's event. We're building it bigger
and, hopefully, better each year, Tabernacle Historical Society President Mary Ann
Silvers said.
The tree lighting is jointly sponsored by
the Tabernacle Historical Society, the Tabernacle Womans Association and the Tabernacle PTA. It is free and open to everyone.
Along with the ceremonial lighting of
the tree, the evenings program will also include musical performances by thirdgrade singers of the elementary school, an
instrumental ensemble from Seneca High

School, the Olson Middle School chorus

and the OMS Hand Chimes group. Santa
Claus will also make a special appearance
and will be available later in the gazebo for
visits and photos.
All portions of the program this year
will take place outdoors. Tents will be in
place for the musicians as well as complimentary refreshments. In addition, Girl
Scouts will be on hand to help children
with a holiday craft.
The festivities will go on, rain or shine,
so guests are advised to dress for the
weather. Guests are also advised to bring
cameras for photos with Santa.
Parking will be available at the Holy Eucharist Church lot, which is adjacent to
Town Hall. Members of the township
CERT Team, Tabernacle Fire Company
No. 1, Tabernacle Rescue Squad and representatives of the Office of Emergency

Management will be on hand to ensure an

enjoyable and safe evening for everyone.
The community tree will be illuminated
every night until early January as a symbol of the good will in Tabernacle. The goal
of the ceremonial lighting, according to
the groups involved, is to one day have it
become a well-loved holiday tradition in
the township.
(Last year) there were a lot of happy
families enjoying the holiday festivities
and appreciating the wonderful community in which we live. This event warms the
heart, enlightens the spirit and enriches
the soul of the community, Silvers said.

Dickens Festival
The Medford Sunrise Rotary
will once again be hosting the
26th annual Dickens Festival as it
transforms the historic Medford
Main Street on Saturday, Dec. 5
from 6 to 10 p.m.
The Dickens Festival set in
colonial Medford Village signals
the beginning of the Christmas
holiday season. The singers, performers and vendors, along with
Santa and Mrs. Claus, all come together for this festive occasion,
Medford Sunrise Rotary Vice
President Jim Robinson said.
The festivities begin with the
parade transporting Santa, Mrs.
Claus and Grand Marshall Ron
Murphy of Murphy's Markets,
the presenting sponsor of the
Dickens Festival, to the gazebo at
18 N. Main St. at 6:15 p.m. Guests
will then witness the annual tree
lighting ceremony as town officials turn the lights on. Santa and
Mrs. Claus will be at the gazebo
all evening to greet children.
The streets of downtown Medford's historic district will be
flooded as folks stroll past lights
strung across the street and
quaint shops decked out with
twinkling decorations adorned
for the holidays.
The holiday spirit will overflow
from carolers along the street and
bands on porches playing everyones favorite holiday tunes.
Along with the live music, guests
will find food vendors, crafters,
jugglers, face painters, stilt walkers and, of course, the live nativity scene, a family favorite, at Tomlinson Park across from the
Pinelands Library, sponsored by
the Medford United Methodist
Church. The food court on Union
and Main streets will have an inflatable movie screen showing
holiday movies. The Medford
Arts Center at 18 N. Main St. will
host an art show. The Medford
Community Center will welcome

visitors with hot chocolate, cookies, Mrs. Claus and a face painter.
The Medford Friends Meeting
will continue more than a quarter-century of cherished holiday
tradition with a free concert at 7
p.m. The concert will be held in
the Meeting House located at 14
Union St. This year, the concert
will feature the acclaimed ChildrenSong of New Jersey, founded
and directed by Polly Murray, a
music educator with numerous
awards to her credit. Admission
for the concert will be free.

season against Central. The win
over Central was also the 100th in
program history.
Throughout the season, the
team started to realize we could
play really good soccer, Jensen
said. As we really got toward the

playoffs, that became the mentality. Buckle down defensively and

dont let opportunities slip by on
the attack.
Senecas season ended in a wild
South Jersey Group III championship game against No. 4 seed
Toms River South. The Golden
Eagles battled back from 1-0 and
2-1 deficits to tie the game each
time. Seneca and Toms River
South went into overtime tied at
2-2, and with time ticking down in
the second overtime, the game appeared to be destined for penalty

kicks.
However, Toms River South got
a corner kick in the final minute
of the second overtime, and Aliya
Canfield scored the game-winning goal on a scramble in front
of the net, ending Senecas playoff
run.

When it ended the way it did,

it was a shock, Jensen said. It
was so sudden.
Despite the loss, Jensen said
the playoff run was important in
setting up the program for 2016.
Seneca had a lot of underclassmen on its varsity team this year,

and Jensen feels his team will

have the ability to get back to the
sectional final again.
We have a lot of juniors and
sophomores who now have this
run under their belt, Jensen
said. They now know what it
takes.

In an effort to encourage
Seneca High School students to
make good after-prom decisions,
the school hosts an after-prom
party. The event is open to all seniors and their dates whether they

event, there are plenty of games

Ten games of bingo will be
played, and a bag or wallet will be
given as a prize for each game.
It will cost $20 per player if
their registration is received by
Nov. 24, and $25 after Nov. 24 and

Seneca hosts Powder Puff game

After dabbling in subjects, Jackie Lambusta

has found a home in the English department

As a student at Rowan College,
Jackie Lambusta developed a passion for teaching.
She knew she wanted to pursue
the profession as a career, but she
just didnt know what subject she
wanted to dedicate herself to.
I dabbled with math and science and quickly learned they
were not my areas of expertise,
Lambusta said. Then, I took a
few courses in American and
British literature and fell in love.
That love for teaching English
has taken her a long way. She is
now doing what she has always
wanted to do and has gotten quite
good at it.
This will be her 10th year at
Seneca High School, where she
was just recently awarded the
Employee of the Month honor
for October.
Lambusta could not say
enough about her fellow staff
members and teachers in the
English department, attributing
much of her success to the group
she is so proud to be a part of.
I feel so blessed to work with a
group of people who are so dedicated to their profession. I am
surrounded by such amazing educators, and I am honored to be
recognized, Lambusta said.
She alluded to how her colleagues welcomed her and made
her feel like a part of the Seneca
Family from the first day she

began teaching at Seneca.

She frequently works with this
group in a collaborative effort to
create dynamic lessons that challenge students and help them create meaning in their own lives.
The strength lies not only in
our congeniality, but also in our
collegiality, as Lambusta put it,
when referring to the Seneca English department.
Lambusta uses reading as a
channel to experience life on a
multitude of levels and make
sense of people's lives in the
grand scheme of things. She believes reading helps develop empathy and form connections to
people whose lives are different.
Literature from different genres and different schools of
thought gives us a platform from
which we can grow into more
well-rounded members of society
people who genuinely care and
can appreciate the struggles of
others, Lambusta said.
The Waretown resident who
used to spend her time scuba diving with her husband now spends
the majority of her free time
being a mom to her son Liam.
Though being a mom can be a
full-time job in itself, she continues to read and obtain knowledge
she can pass down to her students.

field by putting on a high-scoring display while the boys tried to steal the show at halftime with their
cheerleading skits. Here, the junior team gets the play call from their coaching staff as they look to piece
together a drive a to get points on the board before halftime to spark a comeback against the senior team.
