Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North Bus Route Changes
This weekend many bus routes in Kanata will have significant changes. Express routes remain the same but additional buses are being added to busy routes. The 160 is being shortened with a new route 168 serving Kanata Lakes and Beaverbrook. The 96 route will have more frequent service and there are more 96D buses at rush hour that follow the express route to downtown. There are also changes to routes 101 and 182 serving the business park. The 118 will go from Kanata to Orleans in peak periods. Check the changes affecting you by going to the OC Transpo website at http://www.octranspo.com/mapscheds/Service_Changes/Fall/Fall_SC_menue.htm and click on Kanata for more details. Thank you to those who participated in the survey on the proposed changes to route 165. The response was 73.6% of Penfield Neighbourhood residents in favour of having the165 include service along Penfield Drive. Residents living right on Penfield Drive voted 68.9% in favour. Since the survey found sufficient support for the proposed change I've notified OC Transpo to proceed with having the inclusion of Penfield Drive. The 165 bus only runs from 7:00 am until 4:00 pm, Monday to Friday, holidays excepted.
School is Back next Week
With students returning to school next week please be extra careful on the roads and watch for pedestrians and cyclists. Remember that you are required to stop from both directions when a school bus is stopped with its red lights flashing. We've had some close calls in Kanata from motorists passing a school bus while the children are crossing the road. So please follow the rules and protect our children.
Blasting Issues
There is considerable development occurring in Kanata where blasting is required for the installation of services and preparation of foundations. Much of Kanata North is situated on precambrian rock, an outcrop of the Canadian Shield that covers much of Northern Ontario. This rock is the roots of ancient mountains and is both very hard and difficult to remove. Many residents are concerned about the vibrations and dust which occurs during blasting activities. Presently this is occurring adjacent to Campeau Drive as well as continuing along Kanata Avenue near the Goulbourn Forced Road.
I will be holding a special meeting to discuss blasting issues in September. Once a location is confirmed the time and place will be on my website and in future columns. The meeting will consider the City Guidelines on blasting, the impact on your homes and recommend measures to minimize the disturbance caused by these operations.
Terry Fox Drive
ON September 5th the Transportation Committee will deal with my motion to fund the completion of Terry Fox Drive in the 2008 budget. This road is paid for by development charges (money paid for each new home and business to provide services to newly developing areas) so it won't increase property taxes. Staff were not considering having this road built until after 2013 but there is an immediate need to serve the Kanata North Business Park as well as present and future residents. To support this motion you can send your views to me by mail, email or fax or attend the meeting. It starts at 9:30 am so contact me if you're planning to attend so I can provide an estimated time for this item.
