PUBLIC OPEN HOUSE ON RAIL ROUTE TO THE WEST

The first open house on the planning and environmental assessment study for the western light rail transit (LRT) corridor is being held on Monday, November 29th from 5:30 8:30 pm at the Tom Brown Arena Upper Hall at 141 Bayview Road. A presentation will begin at 7 pm. If you cannot attend you can view the information on the project web site at www.ottawa.ca/westernLRT. This study will determine the location of LRT from Tunneys Pasture to Baseline. Three key routes are being considered the Parkway, Byron Ave. and Carling Ave. This first meeting is to provide an overview of the work underway, planning objectives, design criteria and more. A weakness in this study is that it does not include the route that will connect from Lincoln Fields to Bayshore, providing the first stage towards Kanata. I had asked that it be included but the request was not approved. I will be raising it again with the new Council as it makes sense to have the planning work done to show how the connection to Kanata will fit into the system. Staff has indicated that some of this work will be necessary to ensure that the connection will work, so including it in this study makes a lot of sense.

WINTER IS COMING
Weve had some snow and freezing rain so winter is upon us. Dont forget to sign up for the Citys snow notification service. By signing up you will be notified when the snowfall is expected to be 7 cm or more as forecast by Environment Canada. Vehicles that remain on the street during overnight parking restriction will get a $60 ticket, even if it ends up not snowing! You will also be notified when the restriction is lifted which can be several days later. Go to www.ottawa.ca/winterparking for details and to sign up for email or twitter notifications. There is no charge for this service.

TERRY FOX, KANATA AVE and HYDRO LINES

The detour on Kanata Ave. will be lifted about the end of November. At that time the road will be open to Terry Fox and about the same time the new portion of Terry Fox to the Richardson Side Road will also be open, providing a connecting route from Kanata Ave. to Richardson Side Road. The part of Richardson Side Road directly from Kanata Ave. down the steep hill will not be reopened for safety reasons. Ive been asked when the hydro lines along Kanata Ave. will be buried. The work on Kanata Ave underway includes placing concrete ducts underground for placement of hydro cables. Next year, once the road is completed to the Goulbourn Forced Road, (including the roundabout at the Stikine/Keyrock intersection) the wires will be pulled through the ducts and the temporary overhead lines removed. Terry Fox at Morgans Grant will also be completed around the end of the month, together with the extension of Second Line to connect to Terry Fox. This should remove most of the cut-through traffic in Morgans Grant. Work is progressing on Terry Fox from Second Line to Richardson Side Road. One section, which had to be compressed by weighting it with stone, will not be completed before winter. As a result the entire section will be open by early summer next year, providing easier access to Centrum and an opportunity to improve bus service from Morgans Grant and Briarbrook.

COYOTES
Coyotes have been sighted in parts of Kanata near open space area. Coyotes rarely create a problem with people but you should keep a close eye on small pets. Coyotes often come near bird feeders as rodents and squirrels, their primary food source, are often in the vicinity. For more information on Coyotes visit: http://ottawa.ca/residents/rural_connections/livestock/wildlife_en.html
