KANATA NORTH NEWS Marianne Wilkinson Councillor, Kanata North POLICE CHIEF AT WARD COUNCIL, MONDAY March 30th,

7 - 9 pm, Program Room, Kanata Seniors Centre, 2500 Campeau (west end of Mlacak Centre)
If you have any questions on policing or safety issues, this Monday is your opportunity to ask the Chief directly. Police Chief Vern White will be attending the Kanata North Ward Council Meeting to bring you up to date on policing matters including the new Western Police Station, police activities to deal with crime such as the recent spate of robberies at convenience stores and banks, and to answer your questions and receive your suggestions. In addition, you will have an opportunity to hear an update of activities at City Hall and to ask questions and provide input. Current issues include the new Official Plan and a recommendation to add lands along March Road into the urban area; Carp River lands; the debate on Lansdowne Park and/or a Soccer stadium in Kanata; the impact of the transit strike; bus ads and more. Ill also run down construction projects that will start this year as well as comment on plans of subdivision, zoning applications and site plans that are presently under review. Ward Council is your opportunity to participate in decisions that affect your community. Everyone is welcome to attend.

TRANSPORTATION COMMITTEE FOR KANATA

The ongoing problems with our transit system consume a great deal of my time. When Kanata was a separate City there was an advisory committee on transit that participated in reviews of routes and made suggestions on serving new areas. Im proposing that we re-establish this Committee to look at all aspects of transportation transit, roads, cycling and pedestrian routes in urban Kanata. If you think this would be useful and particularly if you would be willing to serve on such a Committee please contact me. The Committee would meet 8 or 9 times a year in an evening at a time and place to be determined. Although all bus routes are now in effect we remain at about 95% of normal operations, as not all buses are yet roadworthy. This means a smaller number of buses on express and other routes as well as a reduced ability to replace a bus that breaks down or is in an accident. Check your schedule on the OC Transpo website. Im working with OC Transpo staff to see how we can deal with

overcrowded express buses, particularly the 60. Thank you to all who let me know when a problem occurs and also for your compliments on the many drivers who provide exceptional service.

HISTORY OF KANATA and STREET NAMES

Dont forget to put in your suggestion for the main collector road that will replace the Goulbourn Forced Road through Kanata Lakes and for suggested themes for our newer communities. Details and application forms are on my website, www.mariannewilkinson.com. The deadline is next Tuesday, March 31st. Ive been asked to speak to a number of groups about the history of Kanata. I do this through a series of stories of events in which I was a participant. Ive been urged to put these stories into print. Some of these Ive put into columns and will do more of those in the summer and then put them into a booklet. It would be great if other long time residents would do the same.
