DEFINITIONS
A.P.I. Gravity @60F:
The A.P.I. Gravity of an oil is derived from an equation which relies upon the Specific Gravity or Relative Density of
the oil. As the equation relies upon a parameter which has no units (as it is a ratio) this parameter also has no units
and is only a factor without any scientific meaning. It is believed that it was originally derived for oil trading
purposes for price fixing i.e. the higher the A.P.I, the higher the price for the oil.

DENSITY
Density is by definition measured in vacuum at 15C.
Use tablles 54A or 54B in volumes VII and VIII.
Density - this parameter is normally recorded at the standard measurement/calculation temperature of 15C. Its
units are reported as either kilograms per litre (kg/ltr) or more correctly kilograms per cubic meter (kg/m3). This
parameter gives the ratio of the mass of the oil to its volume albeit that its units record an apparent weight per unit
volume. The Density of an oil is normally reported on a certificate of quality to four decimal places as say, 0.8590
kg/ltr. @ 15C. It is the preferred parameter for the calculation of quantity of the oil cargo.
Reference to density "in vacuo" and density "in air" is to be specifically avoided.
The standard parameter of density is only density (to be associated with density "in vacuo") and density "in air"
does not exist save for its associated Petroleum Measurement table 56 factor for tonnage calculation/conversion.

RELATIVE DENSITY 15/4


Relative Density 15/4 is the density of oil at 15C/density of fresh water at 4C.
Relative Density 15/4 can be treated exactly the same way as density at 15C as it is almost the same.
Use tablles 54A or 54B in volumes VII and VIII or convert to API using table 3 in volume XI/XII.

RELATIVE DENSITY 60/60 (SG)


Relative Density 60/60 is the density of cargo at 60F/density of fresh water at 60F.
Convert this density at 15C, or API using table 3 in volume XI/XII.
Specific Gravity - this parameter is more correctly identified and termed Relative Density. The parameter has no
units as it is the ratio of the Density of oil at a temperature to the Density of water at a temperature (thus the
correct terminology of Relative Density). Commonly the recorded temperatures are 60/60F but alternative
temperatures of 15/4C may also be found. This latter Relative Density is in fact Density @ 15C given that the
Density of water at 4C is 1.00.

ASTM Tables
- Table 5A, 6A, 23A, 24A, 53A, and 54A are ASTM tables for Crude Oils
- Table 5B, 6B, 23B, 24B, 53B, and 54B are ASTM tables for Petroleum products.
- Table 5C, 24C and 54C are ASTM tables USING Thermal Expansion Coefficients.
- Table 5D, 6D, 53D and 54D are ASTM tables for Lubrication Oils.
- The ODD tables are for converting API, Relative Density or Density into API60, RD60 or DENS15.

If using Table 11 together with API60/60 and Stowfactor Longtons per Barrel, the result will be weight in longtons
and in AIR.
If using Table 13 together with API60/60 and Stowfactor Tonnes per Barrel, the result will be weight in Metric Tons
and in AIR.
If converting from VACUUM to AIR do not subtract 1.1 from Dens15/15, always use Table 56 (Dens15 is in Kg/m3,
therefore 1.1, and not 0.0011)

Definition of terms used


API Gravity
API Gravity is a numerical system used on petroleum and petroleum products correlated to density and relative
density (see API MPMS Chapter 9). The relative density to API relation is:
API Gravity @ 60F = (141.5 divided by relative density @ 60F/60F less 131.5
Automatic Sampler
An automatic sampler is a device used for obtaining, by automatic means, representative sample from the
fluid flowing in a pipe.
Crude Oil Washing (COW)
The use of a high-pressure stream of the crude oil cargo to dislodge or dissolve clingage from the bulkheads,
bottom and internal tank structures of a vessel during discharge operation.
Density
The ratio of the mass of a substance to its volume. Since density is dependent on temperature and pressure
these should be stated.
Free Water (FW)
The water that exists in a layer. It typically lies beneath the oil.
Gross Observed Volume (GOV)
Total Observed Volume (TOV) less Free Water (FW)
Gross Standard Volume (GSV)
The Gross Observed Volume (GOV) multiplied by the Volume Correction Factor (VCF). This may be either
the volume in a tank or correction Factor (VCF). This may be either the volume in a tank or the
difference between the volumes before and after a transfer.
Load On Top (LOT)
The procedure of commingling the recovered oil slops with the next cargo by loading the cargo on top of the
slops.
Meter Factor (MF)
The ratio of the actual volume of liquid passed through a meter to the volume indicated by the meter.
Net Standard Volume (NSV)
The Gross Standard Volume (GSV) less Sediment and Water (S+W).
Observed Reference Height
Observed reference height is the distance actually measured from the tank bottom or datum plate to the
established reference point.
On Board Quantity (OBQ)
All Material in vessels cargo tanks and associated lines immediately prior to loading. OBQ quantity may
include any combination of water. oil, LOT slops, oil residue, oil/water emulsions and non-liquid material.
Outturn Loss
The difference in Net Standard Volume NSV between the quantity shown on the Bill of Lading and the quantity
shown on the Outturn.
Reference Height
Reference height is the distance from the tank bottom and/or datum plate to the established reference
point or mark.
Remaining On Board (ROB)
All material in vessel's cargo tanks and associated lines after discharge. excluding vapour. ROB may include
any combination of water, oil, oil residue, oil/water emulsion and non-liquid material.

Sediment and Water (S & W)


The non-hydrocarbon solid material and water in suspension within the oil.
Sediment
Suspended non-hydrocarbon solids material present within the oil but not in solution.
Slops
Material collected after such operations as stripping, tank washing or dirty ballast separation. It may include oil,
free water, suspended sediment and suspended water and is usually contained in a tank or tanks permanently
assigned to hold such material.
Suspended Water
The water within the oil which is finely dispersed as small droplets. It may, over a period of time, either collect
as free water or become dissolved water, depending on the condition of temperature and pressure prevailing.
Total Calculated Volume (TCV)
The Gross Standard Volume (GSV) plus Free Water (FW)
Total Delivered Volume (TDV)
Total Calculated Volume (TCV) on board before discharge less Total Calculated Volume (TCV) ROB.
Total Received Volume (TRV)
Total Calculated Volume (TCV) on board after loading less Total Calculated Volume (TCV) OBQ.
Total Observed Volume (TOV)
The volume of oil including total water & total sediment measured at the oil temperature and pressure prevailing.
Vessel Load Ratio (VLR)
The Total Received Volume (TRV) divided by the quantity (TCV) measured by the shore loading terminal, i.e.

The mean of the VLRs, over several voyages is called the Vessels Experience Factor at Loading (VEFL).
Vessels Experience Factor Discharge (VEFD)
The mean of the VDRs. over several voyages is called the Vessels Experience Factor at Discharge (VEFD).
Volume Correction Factor (VCF or Ctl)
A factor dependent upon the oil API/Density/Relative Density and temperature which corrects oil volumes to
the standard reference temperature. In dynamic measurements this factor is known as Correction for Temperature
on Liquid (Ctl)
Weight Conversion Factor (WCF)
A factor, dependent on the API/Density/Relative Density, for converting volume to weight-in-air. Such factors
shall be obtained from the API-ASTM-IP Petroleum Measurement Tables.

This programme is designed to determine quantity of cargo to be ordered for


SHORE LINE DISPLACEMENT at the end of loading where there is difference in shore tempe
ship temperature of cargo.

Usual situation for Loading on SBM at Juaymah Port, when vessel will load 2 or 3 Grade of Cargo.
Before completion of 1st, 2nd and 3rd Cargo, Terminal will request to Stop loading for Line Displacement when Vessel w
Cargo Tanks free space 200,000 bbls or More ( @ Obs.Temperature ).
NOT Less, due to capacity of Shore Underwater Cargo Lines 200,000 bbls, and this volume will be pushed by ANOTHE

Problem : Due to Shore Cargo Line is Underwater - Cargo will cool.


If you order for Loading 200,000 bbls, Vessel will receive 199,100 bbls due to cooling of cargo in underwater Shore Line
As result - Short Loading.

REQUIRED : Calculate Quantity of Cargo for Ordering to Terminal in order to receive 200,000 bbls at Obs.Temperature

IV.1.3. Wedge formula


This SAYBOLT wedge-formula is only to be used with liquid, when the liquid doesn't touch all four bulkheads.
By means of soundings the innage of the liquid is determined. On this innage a correction, (different from the trim correctio
applied. This correction is calculated using the wedge formula.
Abbreviations used:
Ls =length between perpendiculars
Ts = trim of the vessel
Y = distance from the ullage point to the aft bulkhead
Da = dip corrected to aft bulkhead
D = observed dip
Dt = total height of the tank

NOTES for VLCC "CHELSEA"


The tank bottoms of all of the centre tanks are box formed and will give an exact wedge. It should be noted however that 1 C is only box formed over the last 36m
of the compartment.
The tank bottoms of 2W, 3W, and 4W are box formed, but the outer bulkheads are inclined, (into the ballast tanks), and therefore the wedge will not be strictly
accurate.
1 W, 5W, and the slop tanks are not square formed and data on the following pages have been taken directly from the calibration tables.
Length and breadth data has been derived from drawing "Midships Section DA200H001" (Box SA 1 /2), which gives a frame spacing of 5.12m between frames
51-111 and 3.42m for frames 50-51 for 5C.
Reference heights and swinging points are taken from data in the Vapour Control Valve calibration tables.
Data tabulated on the following pages shows calculated wedge volumes.
Note that 1 W, 5W, and the Slop tanks are not wedged, and data has been taken directly from the calibration tables.
All wedged volumes have been adjusted by a factor of 0.993 to allow for permeability. This factor which was supplied by the shipyard has been applied to
data in the Trim and Stability Book and to all volumes in the Calibration tables.
