APPENDIX B

Beauty and the Beast

(Adapted from 365 Fairy Tales, Rhymes and other Stories)
Once, a girl called Beauty lived with her father and sisters. One day her father was going to an old town and he asked his daughters what they would like him to bring them. I want a new dress, said the first sister. I want a new hat, said the second sister. I would like a red rose, said the Beauty. The father bought the dress and hat, but he couldnt find a red rose anywhere. On the way back, he passed a wonderful garden where he could see a beautiful red rose growing, so he picked one. Suddenly, there was a terrible roar and an ugly beast appeared. Why have you stolen my rose? he said. Its for my daughter. Take the rose, said the Beast. But give me your daughter in return, or you will die. The father went home in a cold weather and told his daughters about the ugly Beast. I will go to the Beast, said Beauty. The Beasts castle was warm and there was good food to eat, so Beauty was comfortable there, although she missed her family. Every evening the ugly Beast appeared and Beauty thought something bad was about to happen. But he was kind to Beauty, so she grew to like him very much. One evening, the Beast gave Beauty a magic mirror. When she looked into it, she saw that her father was sick. I must go to my father, said Beauty. Promise you will come back to me, said the Beast. Beauty went home to look after her father. He was soon healthy, but she forgot her promise to the Beast. One day, Beauty looked in the magic mirror and saw that the Beast was sick. Then she remembered her promise. I must go back to the Beast, said Beauty, and she hurried back to the castle. The Beast lay beside the red rose bush. Please do not die, Beast, said Beauty. I love you. As if by magic, the Beast changed into a handsome prince. I was under a magic spell, said the prince. But your loving words, spoken from the heart, broke the spell,. Soon after, Beauty and the prince were married, and they lived happily ever after.
