The Sun
As the new Moorestown Li-
brary draws closer to completion,
preparation for the move is well
underway, according to library di-
rector Joe Galbraith. With talks
of renovating the library span-
ning almost 17 years, Galbraith
said it has been a long time com-
ing.
We are in high gear for prep-
ping this place for a move, he
said.
The largest part of the move
will consist of transporting close
to 100,000 items, which will in-
clude books, DVDs, CDs and mi-
crofilm, according to Galbraith.
Galbraith explained that pro-
fessional library movers would be
responsible for dismantling each
shelf in the current library and
reassembling and restocking
each shelf in the new library.
Thats a really big undertak-
ing, and Im really glad to be
handing that off to the profes-
sionals, Galbraith said.

Julia Applegate and Katy
Schlechtweg, both members of
the Moorestown Friends School
Class of 2010, received honors
from the Centennial Conference
at the conclusion of their field
hockey careers at Dickinson Col-
lege.
Applegate, originally from
Moorestown, was recently chosen
as one of nine student-athletes in
the conference to be named to the
Centennial Conference All-
Sportsmanship Team. She played
midfield and fullback on the Red
Devils team.
Schlechtweg, whose hometown
is Mount Laurel, was named to
the 2013 Longstretch/National
Field Hockey Coaches Associa-
tion Division III All-South Region
Team. She was also named to the
Second Team All-Centennial Con-
ference as goalkeeper, leading the
Red Devils to one of the best sea-
sons in the history of the pro-
gram.
She was also recognized as the
conference's inaugural Scholar-
Athlete of the Year for field hock-
ey. This award is presented to a
junior or senior athlete who
earns All-Conference honors and
is a member of the Centennial
Conference Honor Roll.
Schlechtweg had one of the high-
est GPA's on the team and is a
three-time member of the Aca-
demic Honor Roll. In addition,
she earned recognition on the
NFCHA Division III National Ac-
ademic Squad.
Schlechtweg ranked third in
the conference in goals against
average at 1.81, and fourth in save
percentage at .750. She started 63
games over the course of her ca-
reer, ranking fifth all-time at
Dickinson, with 488 career saves.
This year, Dickinson's team post-
ed the most wins since 2004, and
was just one win shy of tying the
school record set in 1992.
With both Applegate and
Schlechtweg on the team, Dickin-
son improved from 5-12 in 2011
and advanced this year to the con-
ference playoffs.

Recreation center fee should
not be a hardship for families
In response to the rec center fee, the pub-
lic comments made stating a fee will pose a
hardship for families with limited income:
Lets be honest, $10 per year, per person
will not cause a hardship.
Most spend $10 per person, per week on
fast food. Therefore $10 per year will not
cause a hardship on families.
Its the same old we need everything for
free.
Helena Robinson
A
s the holiday season begins to
wind to a close, we want to
take this opportunity to thank
everyone who stepped up to help those
in need. This time of year usually
brings out the best in people. Judging
from the number of announcements
we received from our readers regard-
ing donation drives, it looks like this
year was no exception.
Last year, Hurricane Sandy created
an immediate need in many communi-
ties. This year, some of those commu-
nities were still in need of help. Food
banks were running low after sending
supplies to those communities hit hard
by the storm.
The same with those who help with
clothing, and even toys.
Over the past few weeks, we have
had the pleasure of publishing stories
about efforts to lend a hand. Like al-
ways, there were the usual Toys for Tot
drives and more. We dont keep a for-
mal count of the number of holiday
fundraising event stories we publish
from year to year, but it certainly
seemed that, in 2013, there were many.
So, we thank those individuals and
groups who organized these efforts.
And, on behalf of them, we also thank
everyone who picked up an extra can
of non-perishable food, an additional
bag of dog food, one more toy and
more. To all of those who reached a lit-
tle deeper into their wallets this year to
help out, your generosity truly made a
difference.
We wish everyone a happy holiday
season and hope for a wonderful 2013.
in our opinion
Happy holidays!
A thank you to everyone who helped to brighten the season for those in need
Stepping up
Thank you to everyone who lent a helping
hand to those in need this holiday season.
But giving shouldnt stop just because the
holidays arent over. Tell us about your
donation drive throughout the year,
and well share it with the rest of the
community.

The holiday season officially
began in Moorestown, as an esti-
mated 1,400 friends and neighbors
gathered on the front lawn of the
Community House to share in the
first-ever tree-lighting celebra-
tion.
This festive, historic event,
which was broadcast live on CBS3
by Moorestowns own Kathy Orr,
truly captured the spirit and com-
munity that is Moorestown.
The turnout exceeded all of
our expectations, both in the
number of people who came out
to join us and in the excitement
and enthusiasm that surrounded
us, beamed George Schulmann,
president of the Board of
Trustees. We believe a new tradi-
tion has begun.
Across the lawn, you could
hear the seasonal sounds from
the Moorestown High School
Madrigals and the Phily Pops
while enjoying warm hot choco-
late and cookies along with a
reading of The Night Before
Christmas with Moorestowns
Elf on the Shelf, Timothy R.
Hollybottom. And, in celebration
of the sixth night of Hanukkah,
the Moorestown Jewish Associa-
tion lit the menorah. You could
also see the generosity of the
community as people responded
to the invitation to give back, car-
rying bags on non-perishable
food, warm clothing and un-
wrapped toys.
The Salvation Army bin was
overflowing, and the Moorestown
Home and School Association
was elated by the results, collect-
ing at least 40 bags of food and
four carloads of clothing, all of
which will make a difference to
many families.
At 6:15 p.m., Orr began the tree
lighting countdown live on CBS3,
with Harry Koons doing the hon-
ors.
Harry has lived here for 54
years. He was the 1992 Citizen of
the Year, has served on the Com-
munity House board for 25 years,
was a past president of Rotary
and sits on the board of the His-
torical Society, to name just a few
of his affiliations, said Laurie
Palko, board trustee and commit-
tee chair. There was no question
he was the most appropriate per-
son to flip the switch.
Everyone watched in wonder
as the 20-foot Norway spruce lit
up the lawn, Moments later, Santa
arrived on the fire truck to con-
clude a truly magical evening.
We wanted Mayberry, and we
got it, Palko said. The Commu-
nity House is part of what makes
Moorestown unique. We want to
create memories here that bond
people and families to each other
and to our town. I believe we have
succeeded and I cant thank our
contributors enough for all of
their support.

Galbraith said he expects the
total number of items moved to
be approximately 30,000 fewer
than the library currently has, as
it is in the process of weeding
through the book collections and
finding new homes for those
items that will not be making the
trip.
For the last couple years,
weve been working with a couple
different places, Galbraith said.
Through book sales and trans-
actions with Better World Books,
an organization that uses book
sale revenue to fund literacy pro-
grams around the world, books
that are still in good condition are
sold when possible.
In addition, Galbraith ex-
plained that he is working with
local residents to donate those
books that cannot be sold to shel-
ters and prisons.
Were actually able to find
new homes for about 90 percent of
the books, Galbraith said.
With construction of the new
library expected to be completed
by mid to late April, Galbraith
said the move into the new li-
brary would take approximately
12 to 15 days.
However, Galbraith explained
that the new library would be
well worth the wait, with ameni-
ties that exceed those of the cur-
rent library.
People are really going to be
wowed when they walk in there,
Galbraith said.
Of the number of features will
be a caf space.
We are in active negotiations
with several different vendors,
Galbraith said.
Other new features will in-
clude a computer-teaching
lounge, which will have 20 com-
puters that will allow the library
to hold computer classes, instead
of just one-on-one lessons with an
individual.
In addition, the new library
will feature its own separate teen
room.
Teens will have their own
space and not feel like theyre dis-
rupting people in the building,
Galbraith said.
The building will feature a
number of improvements, includ-
ing plenty of windows for natural
light, comfortable seating areas
and a state-of-the-art HVAC sys-
tem.
All of the floor space under
the library will have radiant heat
under the floors, Galbraith said.
Thats especially important in
the childrens department during
story time because they sit on the
floor.
Complementing the new addi-
tions in the building, Galbraith
said technology and adult pro-
grams would be expanded follow-
ing the move, while childrens
programs will continue to be leg-
endary.
Well be continuing to provide
the same level of child program-
ming, Galbraith said.
He added that the library was
recently awarded for excellence
in early childhood literacy for
2013 by the state.
Completely funded by a private
donation by the Friends of the
Moorestown Library, the new li-
brary will also be completely re-
furnished with no additional ex-
pense to Moorestown taxpayers.
Although he is excited for the
move, Galbraith said the new li-
brary is for the residents of
Moorestown and that the staff is
only the stewards.
Incorporating residents sug-
gestions into the planning, Gal-
braith said new cardholder sign
ups are an indication of just how
much residents are looking for-
ward to the new building.
Normally, we sign up about
five to 10 new cardholders per
month, Galbraith said. So far in
the year 2013, weve signed up al-
most 1,000.

When Moorestown business
owner William G. Burris and his
wife Linda Burris see a communi-
ty need, they dont hesitate to step
forward and help, even when help
has been given in the past.
Swedes Run Barn Restoration
Project is one such example. Last
November when Bill Burris read
in The Moorestown Sun that
$5,000 was needed to complete the
restoration of Swedes Run Barn,
the Burris family made a dona-
tion in that amount. When Bur-
ris recently read in From the
Front Porch, the newsletter of
the Historical Society of
Moorestown, that an additional
$5,000 was needed, he didnt hesi-
tate to match his donation from
last year.
The additional money is need-
ed to satisfy the outstanding bal-
ance for the revitalization of the
roof. As the project progressed, it
was discovered that the remain-
ing rafters were badly deteriorat-
ed and their need for replacement
doubled the original expected
cost.
Julie Maravich of the histori-
cal society stated, Bill Burris is a
wonderful philanthropist whose
generosity and concern for his-
toric preservation has benefitted
Moorestown not only through his
donations to Swedes Run Barn
Restoration but other historical
projects as well.
According to Maravich, cus-
tom doorjambs and doors are
final touches that are in the
works. Help is still needed, how-
ever, for the construction of a
small landing inside the door. The
landing is needed for safety pur-
poses.
For more information regard-
ing the Swedes Run Barn Restora-
tion Project and to make a dona-
tion, please visit
www.moorestown.com/history.
The Honor Society of Phi
Kappa Phi recently announced
that Emma Sauerwein of
Moorestown was recently initiat-
ed into Phi Kappa Phi, the na-
tion's oldest and most selective
collegiate honor society for all ac-
ademic disciplines. Sauerwein is
pursuing a degree in communica-
tions at Syracuse University.
Sauerwein is among approxi-
mately 32,000 students, faculty,
professional staff and alumni to
be initiated each year. Member-
ship is by invitation and requires
nomination and chapter approval.
Only the top 10 percent of sen-
iors and 7.5 percent of juniors,
having at least 72 semester hours,
are eligible for membership.
Graduate students in the top 10
percent of the number of candi-
dates for graduate degrees may
also qualify, as do faculty, profes-
sional staff, and alumni who have
achieved scholarly distinction.
Couple steps up to help Swedes Run Barn
Sauerwein part of honor society
Kathleen Williams, regional
vice president of Weichert, Real-
tors, announced that sales associ-
ates Jennifer Cotton, Elizabeth
Beth Berry, Nancy MacDermott
and Mary Rogers, as well as Dawn
Schweiker, a gold services manag-
er for Weichert Financial Servic-
es, were named a FIVE STAR Real
Estate Agents by Philadelphia
Magazine and Five Star Profes-
sional, an independent provider
of localized research on the per-
formance of service profession-
als.
Five Star Professionals sur-
veyed residents in and around the
Philadelphia area who purchased
a home worth more than $150,000
within a 12-month period, and
1,000 Philadelphia Magazine sub-
scribers. An additional 250 sur-
veys were sent to mortgage and
title companies to help judge the
agents technical skills and
knowledge.
Recipients of the survey were
asked to evaluate agents based
upon nine factors, and only real
estate agents with whom they
knew through personal experi-
ence. The factors included cus-
tomer service, communication,
ability to find the right home, in-
tegrity, negotiation skills, the
marketing of the home, knowl-
edge of the market, closing prepa-
ration and their overall satisfac-
tion with the agent. Based off the
surveys findings, the final list of
2013 Five Star Real Estate Agents
is a select group, representing
fewer than 7 percent of real estate
agents in the area.
