DESCR;>T;/8
The LM35 series are precision integrated-circuit temperature sensors, with an output voltage linearly proportional to the Centigrade temperature. Thus the LM35 has an advantage over linear temperature sensors calibrated in elvin, as the user is not re!uired to subtract a large constant voltage "rom the output to obtain convenient Centigrade scaling. The LM35 does not re!uire any e#ternal calibration or trimming to provide typical accuracies o" $%C at room temperature and $&C over a "ull '55C to ()5*C temperature range. Low cost is assured by trimming and calibration at the wa"er level. The low output impedance, linear output, and precise inherent calibration o" the LM35 ma+e inter"acing to readout or control circuitry especially easy. The device is used with single power supplies, or with plus and minus supplies. ,s the LM35 draws only -* ., "rom the supply, it has very low sel"-heating o" less than *.)C in still air. The LM35 is rated to operate over a '55C to ()5*C temperature range, while the LM35C is rated "or a '/*C to ())*C range 0')* with improved accuracy1. The LM35 series is available pac+aged in hermetic T2 transistor pac+ages, while the LM35C, LM35C,, and LM353 are also available in the plastic T2-45 transistor pac+age. The LM353 is also available in an 6-lead sur"ace-mount smalloutline pac+age and a plastic T2-55* pac+age.

A>>L;CAT;/8S
The LM35 is applied easily in the same way as other integrated-circuit temperature sensors. Blue or cement the device to a sur"ace and the temperature should be within about *.*)C o" the sur"ace temperature. This presumes that the ambient air temperature is almost the same as the sur"ace temperature. @" the air temperature were much higher or lower than the sur"ace temperature, the actual temperature o" the LM35 die would be at an intermediate temperature between the sur"ace temperature and the air temperature, which is especially true "or the T2-45 plastic pac+age where the copper leads are the principal thermal path to carry heat into the device, so its temperature might be closer to the air temperature than to the sur"ace temperature. To minimiUe this problem, ensure that the wiring to the LM35, as it leaves the device, is held at the same temperature as the sur"ace o" interest. The easiest way to do this is to cover up these wires with a bead o" epo#y which will insure that the leads and wires are all at the same temperature as the sur"ace, and that the temperature o" the LM35 die is not a""ected by the air temperature. The T2-/- metal pac+age can also be soldered to a metal sur"ace or pipe without damage. 2" course, in that case the :' terminal o" the circuit will be grounded to that metal. ,lternatively, mount the LM35 inside a sealedend metal tube, and then dip into a bath or screw into a threaded hole in a tan+. ,s with any @C, the LM35 and accompanying wiring and circuits must be +ept insulated and dry, to avoid lea+age and corrosion. This is especially true i" the circuit may operate at cold temperatures where condensation can occur. ?rinted-circuit coatings and varnishes such as Jumiseal and epo#y paints or dips are o"ten used to insure that moisture cannot corrode the LM35 or its connections. These devices are sometimes soldered to a small light-weight heat "in to decrease the thermal time constant and speed up the response in slowly-moving air. 2n the other hand, a small thermal mass may be added to the sensor, to give the steadiest reading despite small deviations in the air temperature. CA>AC;T;#E L/ADS
Li+e most micropower circuits, the LM35 has a limited ability to drive heavy capacitive loads. The LM35 alone is able to drive 5* p" without special precautions. @" heavier loads are anticipated, isolating or decoupling the load with a resistor is easy 0see Figure )/1. 2r you can improve the tolerance o" capacitance with a series 7-C damper "rom output to ground 0see Figure )51. Lhen the LM35 is applied with a 5**-K load resistor as shown in Figure )-, Figure )H, or Figure )4, the device is relatively immune to wiring capacitance because the capacitance "orms a bypass "rom ground to input and not on the output. Jowever, as with any linear circuit connected to wires in a hostile environment, per"ormance is a""ected adversely by intense electromagnetic sources such as relays, radio transmitters, motors with arcing brushes, and ;C7 transients, as the wiring acts as a receiving antenna and the internal Munctions act as recti"iers. For best results in such cases, a bypass capacitor "rom : @A to ground and a series 7-C damper, such as H5 K, in series with *.5 or ) .F "rom output to ground are o"ten use"ul. These are shown in Figure 5/, Figure 5/, and Figure 5H.
