Man Up!
While pastoring in the early 1980s in Oklahoma, I became
acquainted with a touring, full-contact fghter skilled in the
martial art of taekwondo. His nickname was Redwood. He
came to our town on the run and seeking to hide out from
his sensei, his master from Kansas who demanded that
Redwood become his slave. When the 64, 230 pound man
refused to do his bidding, the teacher put out a contract on
his life. Though Redwood could do the splits front-ways and
side-ways, he knew that he needed to split from Kansas
and get out of Dodge! Not knowing Christ, he stumbled onto our church. He
showed me a yellow notebook paper upon which he had written Bible verses
picked at random from the Bible. The Spirit had led him to the greatest plan of
salvation verses possible John 3:16, Romans 6:23, and Romans 5:8. This big
man understood that he needed to Man Up to become a servant of the Savior.
Guys, even though you may be a manly man like my friend who left the fghting
world and eastern religion, the most courageous thing you can do is to become
Gods man under the King of Kings authority. I believe that the Lord is leading
you to be a part of our Band of Brothers, which begins next Wednesday at
6:25 pm in the Chapel. Like Redwood, you dont have to know much about the
Bible to be a candidate for a full-contact encounter with the living Lord.
I am privileged to work with our lay-leader, Mr. Terry Cole, and our staff
coordinator, John David Edie. John David, Steve Hayes, Tom Rider, Doug
Pigg, and I will be teaching on practical subjects specifcally related to being
godly men. We urge you to get involved at a particular table, make friends, and
be under the direction of our Table Disciplers, the fellows who coordinate the
discussion and care for the men around them. We always allow time for prayer
and sharing. This is a terrifc way to get more involved. Come as you are
concerning clothes, lifestyle, and other ways, but know that God will help you to
be what you ought to be. If you have been a part of the Mens Ministry, invite a
friend to sit at your table, even if he is not a believer or an FBCN member. So,
lets man up!
