Foreign Exchange and Currency
The currency used in Brazil is called Real (R$) and the foreign
exchange rate is published daily in the newspapers and other
specialized sites. Foreign exchange can be handled in banks,
travel agencies and authorized hotels. International credit cards
are accepted at virtually everywhere, including hotels,
restaurants, stores, travel agencies, car rental companies and
businesses that render services to tourists. The Brazilian Central
has a very informative site in English that is worthwhile taking a
look (http://www.bcb.gov.br/?english). There is a list of some
places where you can exchange your money below.

Like any other big city in the world, you have to be careful when
walking through the city:
Do not open your wallet in the street;
Be careful when withdrawing money; avoid using cash
machines outside banks and shopping malls;
Avoid specific places to walk around, especially at night
and without locals. This applies to areas near favelas
(slums), for instance;
Do not walk with valuables showing;
Avoid carrying your original passport, a copy is enough;
Exchange your money for local currency (Real);
Do not take valuable objects to the beach and keep your
belongings in sight.
