 Health Stats: Looking at the table below, what relationship is there between risks
of depression and how connected teens feel to their school?

 What could make someone feel very connected to school? What could make
someone feel disconnected?
-For someone to feel connected to school they probably would have to have
friends, and be involved with activities. For someone to feel uncomfortable or
disconnected at school they probably wouldn’t have friends, and probably
would get teased, or they could be having problems with family and friends.

-Brain chemicals are called Neurotransmitters.

disrupting communication, so they tend to shut down.

-Medications are used to help open back up, and just to be more
caring and alert.

-The five common factors involved in depression are, Family
history, Trauma and Stress, Pessimistic Personality, physical
conditions, and other Psychological disorders.
 What does a pessimistic personality mean?
-A pessimistic personality means people who have low self-
esteem, and a negative outlook on most things in life.
o Go to the left hand side of the page and click onto Who Gets Depression.
 Are men or women most likely to become depressed? Why?
-Women are more likely to become depressed due to, hormonal
changes by, puberty, menstruation, menopause, and
pregnancy.

Anxiety and Depression.
 Why does anxiety and depression occur together?
-Anxiety and depression occur together because, when your
depressed you are lonely, hopeless, and that can make you
afraid and anxious. (which is anxiety)
 Is it treatable? How?
-Yes anxiety is treatable, you can go to therapy, take
medication, or even do both. You can take antidepressants,
which can treat really bad anxiety disorders.

 What activity did you try? How could this activity help

-I tried the breathing exercise, and this would help me
in my stress, because sometime in stressful situation I
forget to breath, and then I get even more stressed and
tend to freak out.
 Suicide is the intentional killing of oneself. Suicide affects all kinds of people:
young, old, bright, average, rich, poor, female, male. In the United States, suicide
is the third-leading cause of death among young people ages 15-24. Between
19560 and 1990, the teen suicide rate quadrupled. But since 1990, the rate has
declined.
o Is there any way to tell whether or not someone is going to attempt
suicide?
-I think sometimes there is a way to tell if someone is going to attempt
suicide. Someone could be really negative or scared of things, not very
open, and just sad and gloomy and hates life. That person could also
have family problems, and maybe even hurt them self, like cutting the
wrist.

o If we understand these risk factors and protective factors, we can take
steps to further reduce the suicide rate.
-I think we can take further steps to reduce the suicide rates by, being
more nice to people, loving on everyone, and just being there for
people to have someone to talk to and trust. We could also open them
up to God, and have them know that he loves them and feels there
pain, and that He will be with them in all there trials.
o Is there a connection between depression and suicide?
-I think there is a connection between depression and suicide because,
when you are feeling depressed you probably would want to do
suicide because you feel you have no place in this world so why not
die…

Risk Factors
 Mood disorders, such as depression, are a major risk factor for suicide
 A previous suicide attempt or a family history of suicide
 Having both a mental disorder and a substance abuse disorder
 Feelings of hopelessness or isolation
 Lack of access to mental health treatment
 Being influenced by the suicide of family members, peers, or celebrities
