Allah, who has created the heaven and the world, the cherisher and sustainer of the
world; God who has been giving His blessing and mercy to the writer to complete the
thesis entitled " Students difficulties in differing lexical items between British and
American English third year students in SMAN 3 Lhokseumawe
Peace and solution may upon out prophet Muhammad (peace be open Him)
who has been promoted as messenger and has accepted the first revelation in this month
to usher mankind to the straight path of Allah. He is the best creation and the best
messenger and for His household, His companions, and His faithful follower who strive
in Allah religion of Islam.

ABSTRACT
This thesis is entitled An Analysis of Difficulties Faced by Second Year
Students at MAS Ulumuddin Islamic Boarding School Uteunkot in Learning
Listening Comprehension Using American Dialect (A Case Study). Listening is one
of the important skill in order to master English, because the students needed to grasp
the meaning and understand what they had heard. Listening comprehension recording
usually used native speaker or a native dialect which one of the dialect used in it was
American dialect speech. Because of this American dialect, the students felt some
difficulties in learning listening comprehension. Based on the background above, the
purposes of this research were in order to find out kinds of difficulties and causes of
such kind of difficulties faced by second year students at MAS Ulumuddin Islamic
Boarding School Uteunkot in learning Listening Comprehension using American
dialect. The design applied in this research was qualitative data approach in type of case
study. Meanwhile, the techniques of data collection were observation, documentation
and inteview. The technique in analyzing data of this research was Miles and
Hubermans model, which consisted of data collection, data display and conclusion
verification. The result of this research in learning listening comprehension of English
subject was the students often faced some difficulties, such as they were lacking in
recognizing some vocabulary pronunciation in listening to American native dialect and
grasping the information in listening comprehension using American dialect. The cause
of the students difficulties in learning listening comprehension using American dialect
were the students unfamiliarity with the spoken words from native speaker of American
dialect and unsufficient lesson that the students got from teacher or school in learning
listening comprehension especially using American dialect.
