1. I created 4 different sketch ideas of a layout.
2. I picked my favorite sketch and used it as a guide to create a flier in Adobe InDesign.
3. I used white as the background
4. I used long rectangles across the page to help emphasize and backup my words. I made a
banner effect backing up the word Conference to add a little fun to the flier layout.

PHOTODESIGN
Description:
Demonstrate good photography and image editing skills. Incorporating color into a poster layout with
original photo.

Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating graphic elements in Photoshop.
Process:
The first thing I did was decide on a color scheme from the book Visual FOCUS book, I decided
on Monochromatic. I went out to capture a good photo with good light, sharp focus, and on point
composition. I used my Nikon 3100 camera. I then edited the photo into Photoshop and using the specific
editing techniques that we were told to use: levels, sharpness, saturation, and color balance. Then I
designed a 8.511 layout that used the photo I took, text, and all of the design elements. I made different
shades of purple boxes and grey to create a frame effect around her face. I made the font centered
because I feel like it is the best for this design.
MONTAGE
Description:
A spiritual montage made by blending of two images together, and the use of typography.
Date:
May 29, 2016
Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Unify a layout with a consistent theme and dominant spiritual message
Learn to blend two or more images together gradually, using masks
Apply typography principles
Process:
I started with a 8.511 blank layer in photoshop.
I selected both photos, first the cherry blossoms, then Jesus.
I first blended the cherry blossoms into the white background. Then I blended the photo of Jesus on
the other side of the project. I made sure they were evenly blended using layer masks.
I added some type with two contrasting fonts. I made them black so them would be visible and help
to make it not too busy. I then added a layer and just painted white behind the words to help them
pop out even more.
LOGOS
Description:
Logo for an organization
Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator& InDesign
Objectives:
Create three completely different, original logos to fit a company or personal image that will
appeal to the audience. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous designs.
Market research: gather opinions from at least ten people about which logo appeals most to them.
Use only the Illustrator tools to create and draw your logos.
Process:
This was really fun to create a logo in Illustrator. After trying out three drafts and ideas, I took a
vote on which was the best. I chose the one I liked best and the one that the voters liked the best,
because it just so happened be the same. I changed the format a little and then I made the other
two. Since the top on is already boxed I had to do the opposite of the assignment. I used a lot of
lines, shape and typography.

Program(s)/Tools:
Illustrator & InDesign
Objectives:
Use the new logo to design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead. Photos are okay on
business card and letterhead as additional design elements. Letterhead should be 8.5 x 11, full-bleed
optional, but trim only .125. Business card should be 3.5 x 2 and printed above center on a vertical page.
Apply typography rules, keeping small copy. Keep designs simple with light watermarks and drop
shadows and plenty of white space.
Process:
I created the logo using simple shapes in Adobe Illustrator. I also downloaded this watercolor brush
in order to make these shapes. Once the logo was created, I opened a new two page InDesign
document and placed my logo .AI file into this document.

shape to create the letter head.
WEB PAGE

A web page designed to showcase my personally created logo.

Program(s)/Tools:
Text Wrangler
Objectives:
Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page so the long side is 300 500 pixels.
Write content to describe the process of creating your logo and how it appeals to a target audience..
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML. (Include all required tags Doctype (provided), html, head, title,
meta charset (provided), body, h1, h2, p, ol or ul (with li tags), img, br, and a link to blog)
Acquire a working knowledge of CSS.
Process:
I created this web page using only TextWrangler. I had never seen or used any HTML/CSS until this
assignment. It was interesting to see how you could make a web page by only using a simple text
editor. I found it very challenging and time consuming, but in the long run rewarding. After I marked up all
my content and inserted my image, I attached a pre-made CSS document to my HTML. I then used a
color opposite to my logo to spice things up a bit. I found these colors by opening Photoshop and using
the eyedropper tool. I also changed my fonts to Calibri and Orator Std. I also centered the logo so it
would not be too close to the edge of the web page.
BROCHURE
Description:
A two sided three fold brochure.
Date:

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130 Section 05
Ben Pingel
Program(s)/Tools:
Text Wrangler
Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four quality images, not including the logo. One should
be clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text follows the cutout shape of the
image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy in at least three paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.
Process:
I set up and measured the fold in Adobe InDesign. I split my layout into 6 sections with the concept
that the two outer sections would be the flaps of the brochure and the 4 middle sections would be
the body of the brochure. I used a grey scale and a nice deep turquoise throughout the brochure to
create repetition and flow. I choose to use photos that were from Beyoncs most resent album. They
also kind of use a grey scale and turquoise so I thought it was fitting. I used a lot of horizontal boxes and
lines to pull it all together. I created the logo in Illustrator using the shapes tool. I placed it on the back so
people can see when they are finished reading the brochure where it came from.
