TheDirector
TheDirectorofashowischargedbythemembershipwiththeresponsibility
ofseeingtheshowthroughtocompletion.TheDirectorisresponsibleforselecting
anartisticvisionfortheshow;thisvisionshouldanswerthequestionsofwhyStage
Troupeshouldbedoingtheshowandwhichoftheshowsthemestheaudience
shouldunderstandwhentheyexitthetheater.Itistheparamountresponsibilityof
theDirectortoconveythisinformationtoboththecastandcrewoftheshow.
OneimportantresponsibilityoftheDirectoristoobtainscriptsforthecast
andkeymembersofthecrew;detailsonhowtodothiswillexplainedlaterinthis
handbook.TheDirectorshouldmaintainagoodideaoftheproductionsbudgetand
makeimportantdecisionsabouttheshowstechnicalneedsbasedonthat
information,alongwiththeProducer,theTechnicalDirector,andindividual
membersofthetechnicalcrew.
AsuccessfulshowrequiresthattheDirectoractivelyseekouthisproduction
headsanddiscussideaswiththem,aswellastheothermembersofthetechnical
crew.Rememberthatyourtechcrewhasideastoo,andmountingashowisa
collaborativeprocess.Directorsshouldfamiliarizethemselveswiththetheater
policiesandproceduresoutlinedinthishandbook.

SoYouThinkYouMightWanttoDirect?
SonowyouknowwhattheDirectordoesandyouthinkyoumightwantto
takeacrackatit.Whatnext?Wellifyoudonthaveaplaythatyouwanttodirect,
youshouldprobablytrytofindone,itskindofanimportantparttotheprocess.
Youcouldalwaysaskyourfriendsifanyofthemknowofashowthattheywould
liketoseedonebyTroupe.Onceyoufindashowyouthinkyoumightwanttodirect,
besureaboutit;youregoingtobespendingalotofyourtimeonthisshow,seeing
andhearingitprobablymorethanyoucareto,somakesureyouloveit.

Onceyouhaveashowandyouknowyouloveitandyouwanttodirectitfor
sure,youshouldfilloutapitchform(whichcanbefoundontheStageTroupe
website)andgototheGeneralMeetingwherepitchesaremade.Thisisyourchance
totrytoconvincethemembershipthatTroupeshoulddothisshow;trytomake
themunderstandwhyyoulovetheshowandwhytheyshould.Besuretotalkabout
alloftheinterestingandchallengingaspectsofyourshow,notjustfortheactors,
butforthetechniciansaswell.

SomeGuidelinesforDirectingaSuccessfulProduction
Ifyoureadnothingelseinthishandbook,itisimperativethatyoureadat
leastthesesixguidelinestodirectingaStageTroupeshow.Theyarethemostbasic
bulletpointsofthemostimportantrulescontainedinthishandbook.

1. Whenyouvisitsomeoneelseshouse,playbytheirrules.Weareguestsin
everyspaceoncampus.WeareveryprivilegedguestsattheStudent
TheateratAgganisArenaandextremelyprivilegedguestsatTheSpace.
Followtherulesforthesespacesandbecourteoustotheadministration
andB&Giftheycomeaskingquestions.
2.MajorTheaterRules:

a. Maximumseatingcapacityis101.Thereisnoflexibilitywiththis
number.Youmayhaveannumberofpeopleonstage,butonly4
peopleinthebooth(typicallytheLightingDesigner,theSound
Designer,andtheirassistants).
b.Pathstoemergencyexitsmustbekeptclearatalltimes,exitsigns
mustbeplainlyilluminatedandfirealarmsmustbevisibleatall
times.
c.Therearenoflamesofanykindallowedinthetheater.Ever.
d.Youmaynotuseanydevicethatsuspendsparticlesintheairsuch
asfogmachines,saws,dryice,etc.
e.Makesurethetheateriskeptclean,lockedattheendoftheday,
andmakesureyousigninandoutinthelog.

3.KeeptheEBoardinformedatalltimesabouteventsanddecisions,evenif
theyseemunimportantorobvious.TheEBoarddoesnotliketohear
aboutStageTroupefromEric,whointurnheardaboutStageTroupefrom
hissuperiors.Itismuchbetterforinformationtotravelupthechainof
commandthandown.
4.Youractionssetaprecedentforyourcastandthemembership.Be
professional,takecareofyourproductionandyourcastmembersand
strivetosetapositivetoneforyourshowandthegroupasawhole.
EncourageyourcasttoattendGeneralMeetingsandTroupefunctions,
suchasSpecialProjects.

5.Everyoneonyourproductionis,andmustbe,ateam.Yourprimarygoalis
toworktogetherwithyourcastandcrewtocreatethebestpossible
producttofulfillyourartisticvision.Whileyouareresponsibleforthis
vision,youworkwithyourProducerandTechnicalDirectortoaccomplish
yourgoalstheydonotworkforyou.

6.Yourshowispartofagroup;itisnotanindividualentity.Whileyourgoal
shouldalwaysbetomakethebestshowpossible,yourshowshouldstrive
tomakeTroupethebestperformingartsgroupitcanbe.Youareworking
withayourshowsuniqueteam,theEBoard,andtheothershowsto
makethisTroupesbestseason.

TheFirstWeek

TheFirstGeneralMeeting
Atthefirstmeetingoftheseason,dresssharpandshowupreadytopresent
yourshowtothemembership.Youwillhavethreeminutestotellthemembership
aboutyourshowandconvincethemthattheyshouldauditionand/ortechforyou.
Thiswillbeverysimilartoyourpitchoftheshowbeforethevotinglastsemester,
butthistimeyouretryingtoconvincethemembershiptobeapartoftheshow,not
justtoletyoudoit.Beginbyintroducingyourself.Youshouldthenmentionthecast
breakdown,brieflyexplainingeachoftheroles.Youshouldmentionverybrieflythe
technicalneedsoftheshow.Mostofall,youshouldconveytothemembershipwhy
Troupeisdoingthisshow,expressingyourartisticvisionfortheproduction;tryto
makethemexcitedaboutbeingapartoftheshow.Trytomentionanyrelevant
informationaboutyourauditionsthatvaryfromthestandardauditionprocedure.
Afterthreeminutes,themembershipwillhavetheopportunitytoaskquestions.

Auditions
Ah,auditions.Youaresolelyresponsibleforcastingyourshow,thoughyou
mayillicithelpfromanyonenotauditioningfortheseason.Troupesaudition
procedureallowsanymemberwhohaspaidduestoauditionforany/allmainstage
showsandSpecialProjects.Typically,auditionerswillsigninwiththeTreasurer,
thensignupontheindividualsheetofeachoftheshowstheyareauditioningfor.An
EBoardmemberwillgivethemanindividualauditionsheetforeachshow.You
shouldprepareasheetwiththecastbreakdownonitsopeoplearefamiliarwiththe
typesofcharactersyouarelookingfor;youcanalsoincludeanyadditional
questionsyouwanttoask.Asyougothroughauditions,youwillcalloutnamesfrom
thelistandgivethemapartner(ornoneorseveral)andhavethempracticeacold
readingofyourchoosing.Thoughvariancesfromthisprocedureareallowed,
whateverprocessyouchoose,besuretokeepyourauditionrequirementstoa
minimumtofacilitatetheauditionprocess.Anotheroptionistoleavegender
specificmonologuesatthesignintablethateachauditionercanpickupastheysign
in.
Afterthreedaysofauditions,youwillmakeacallbacklistofthoseactorsyou
wishtoseeagain.Nobodycanbecastwithoutbeingcalledback.Sinceallcastingis
donefromageneralpoolandnobodycanbeintwomainstageshowsinthesame
semester,makesureyoucallbackmorepeoplethanyouneed.
AuditionsareusuallyMondaythroughWednesdayfrom6pm10pm,with
callbacksonThursdayfrom6pm10pm.Auditionsarelongandcanquitestressful
ifyoudontgoinarmedwiththisadvice:

Prepare!Makesureyouhaveplentyofcopiesofcoldreadingsespeciallya
lotofsceneswith2females(ifpossible),asyouwilllikelyhavemorewomen
auditioningthanmen.

Arriveat5pmtosetupyourroomsoyoucanbeginpromptlyat6pm.
Movequickly.Youhavealotofpeopletoaudition,sodontspendtoomuch
timewithonlyafewpeople.Makesureyougettoeveryone.

Dontworryifeveryoneyouauditiondoesntreadforthepartyouare
consideringthemforatthefirstaudition;thatswhatcallbacksarefor.The
primaryauditionisatestofskillandinmostcases,youwillknowrightaway
ifanactorisrightforanypartinyourshowregardlessofwhattheyread.
Auditionswillendpromptlyat10pmeachnight.
Noexceptions!

TheCastingMeeting
Youmighthavehearddarktalesfromcastingmeetings,butthetruthis,
castingcanandshouldbeaquickandpeacefulprocessifyourememberthesetwo
things:
1.Thegoalofthecastingmeetingistocastfourgreatshows,notonestellar
show.Certainlyyouwantallofyourfirstchoices,butasyourshowispart
ofagroupandnotanindividualentity,youmustybewillingtobeflexible
inyourcastingdecision.
2.Dontmarryyourselftoanysingleactor.Noactorhasthepotentialto
makeorbreakyourshow.Ifyoufeelthatistrue,youdontknowhowto
doyourjobproperly.Youwillseeoverahundredpeopleduring
auditions;somewillbeawful,somewillbeextraordinary,butmostwill
bejustfine.Yourjobisadirectoristohoneyouractorsintobelievable
characters.Thatskillshouldextendbeyondasingleactor.
Aprovenmethodtomakecastingeasyforadirectoristomakeachartof
eachofyourfirst,second,third,andfourthchoicesforeachroleinyourshow.You
maynotnecessarilyfillinfourchoicesforeachrole,andthatisfine,butbesureto
haveatleasttwo,threeifpossible,foreachrole.Asahelpfulnote,trynottoput
anyoneonthechartthatyouwouldnotwillinglywelcomeinyourcast.Thiswill
helpyoufocusandprepareyourselftomakecrucialsacrificesbeforethemeeting
begins.Inotherwords,makesurethatyoure100%satisfiedwithyoursecond
choicecast.
Followingcallbacks,alloftheDirectors,AssistantDirectors,theStudent
GroupAdvisor,andanonauditioning,unbiasedEBoardmemberwillassemblefor
thecastingmeeting.TheEBoardmemberwillserveasthemediatorandwill
administerthemeeting.Oncethemeetingbegins,eachDirectorwillreadhisfirst

choiceactorforeachrole.WhilethefirstDirectorisreadinghisfirstchoicecast,all
otherDirectorswillsayconflictifanameappearsontheirfirstchoicelists.The
otherDirectorswillsaypossibleconflictifanameappearsontheirsecond,third,
orfourthchoicelist.ThisprocesscontinuesuntilalltheDirectorshavereadtheir
firstchoicelists.

Themediatorwillthenbeginaforumofdiscussionwhereeachconflictwill
beaddressedonebyoneuntilallconflictshavebeenresolved.Onceallconflicts
havebeenresolved,eachDirectorwillreadhisfinallistagain,toensurethatnobody
appearsonmorethanonelist.
Regardingconflictresolution:
Themajorityoftheconflictresolutionstrategyreliesnotonthemediator,
butonthegoodwillandamiabilityoftheDirectors.Forexample,ifDirectorAwants
tocastanactorinasmallerrole,whileDirectorBwantsthesameactorforalead
role,commonsenseandetiquettedictatethatDirectorArelinquishtheactorto
DirectorB.Majorconflictsarisewhenanactorisincontentionformultiplerolesof
thesamesizeandadiscussionmustbestartedtoresolvetheconflict.Iftheconflict
isnotresolvedbetweentheDirectors,themediatorwillmakethedecision.The
mediatormayaskwhateverquestionshefeelswillpreparehimtomakea
responsiblecastingdecision.Themediatorsdecisionisfinal.Itistheopinionof
StageTroupethatcastingdecisionsmadebythemediatoradverselyaffectsthe
spiritoftheatricalproductionandmustbepracticedonlyintherarestof
circumstances.

**NOTE:Alldiscussionthattakesplaceinthecastingroomstaysinthecasting
room.InformationthatleavesthecastingmeetingcanONLYhurtfeelingsnothing
more.Forthatparamountreason,itisstrictlyforbiddentodiscussthemeeting
afterishasended.

TheTechMeeting
UsuallyontheFridayofauditionweek,theTechnicalAdvisorwillcallatechnicians
meetingattheSpace.Youarerequiredtoattendtodiscuss,ingreaterdetail,your
artisticvisionfortheshow,notingthetechnicaldemandsofyourshow.Itishere
thatyourmentionifyouneedafourstoryrotatingsetorifyouneedsixteen
matchingdresses.TheTAwillmakeeveryefforttoassignthepropertechniciansto
eachshowbasedonyourpresentationoftheshowstechnicalneeds.

NowYourShowIsOffandRunning!
Firstandforemost,youshouldmakecopiesofyourshowsscriptforyour
actors,StageManager(s),TD(s),andothertechies.Technically,makingphotocopies
ofascriptthatyoubuyatabookstoreorborrowfromalibraryisillegal.However,
whatStageTroupedoesntknow,wonthurtit.Inotherwords,ifyoumakecopiesof
thescriptonyourown,whowouldknow?Oncethescriptsarehandedout,havea
readthroughofthescriptwiththeactors.Itisencouragedthatyouinviteyour
technicalstafftothereadthroughaswellsothattheymaybecomefamiliarwith
you,thecast,andtheshow.YoushouldalsoarrangeatimewithyourTDtohavea
techmeetingsoyoucanmeetyourtechstaffandstartexchangingideas.
ItisyourresponsibilitytoschedulerehearsalswithyouractorsandStage
Managers.YoumustinformtheVicePresidentofyourrehearsalschedulesothathe
mayreserveUniversityspacesforyourrehearsals.Youwillbeassignedroomson
campusforthetimesanddaysyouspecify.Therearemanydifferentwaysto
rehearseashow,noneofwhichwillbeoutlinedhere.Youllhavetopickupahowto
directingbookforthat;justrememberthatyourresponsibilityistoyourcastandto
StageTroupetohaveawellrehearsedshowonopeningnight.
Aspreviouslystated,yourshowandyourcastmembersareapartofStage
Troupe.StageTroupeistheoldestandlargestperformingartsgroupatthe
University.Itfollowsoverahalfcenturysworthoftraditionofproducing
wonderfultheaterfortheBUcommunity,andofbeingafungroupwhereeveryone
canparticipateintheater,learn,andenhancetheircollegeexperience.Itisthehope
ofeveryEBoardthatyouinstillinyourcastandcrewthefeelingthattheyareapart
oftheTroupefamily.Itisimperativethatyouencourageyourcasttocometo
GeneralMeetings;theyarethemeansbywhichwekeepthegrouprunninganditis
importantforthemembershiptoshowtheirsupportofthegroupasawhole.
EncouragethemtoattendallStageTroupefunctionssuchasCombats!,Special
Projects,andotherevents.Internally,encourageyouractorstobondwiththeir
castmatesbyorganizingeventswithyourcastsuchasmovienights,parties,tripsto
theaterinBoston,sittingtogetheratotherTroupeshowsintheseason,etc.Finally,
tryyourbesttoincludethetechnicalstaffinallbondingactivities.Oftentheyare
involvedwithseveralproductionsatonce,butitsimportanttocreateafeelingof
togethernesswithinyourshow,amongalloftheshowsintheseason,andwithin
StageTroupe.

ProductionHeads
EveryStageTroupeshowwillhavethreedefinedproductionheads:the
Director,theTechnicalDirector,andtheProducer.Thethreeofyouareresponsible
fortheareasdesignatedtoyouinthebelowdefinitionsandareresponsiblefor
workingtogethertoservethebestinterestoftheproductionuntilitscomplete.
TheEBoard:TheEBoardisyourbestfriend.Whilenotanofficialproductionhead
byanymeans,theEBoardfunctionsasanadvisoryboardandaresourceforyour
production.Itsaimistoensurethatfourproductionsgoupwithaslittleheadache
aspossible.Ifanythinggoeswrong,orifyouhaveanyproblemsorquestions,be
theyartistic,personal,orprocedural,theEBoardistheretoofferguidance.For
example,ifthereissomecostumeorpropthatyourproductionsstaffcantfind,tell
theEBoardandtheyllworkonit.Ifyourunintoaconflictamongactors,theyll
offeradviceorstepinifnecessarytoresolvetheconflict.
Director:Youwillformulateanartisticconcepttopresenttotheproductionstaff
andyouareresponsibleforallareasofproductionandkeepingcommunication
openbetweenthestaff.TheDirectorisresponsibleforcastingtheshowandfor
solvingcastproblems.TeDirectorisresponsibleforschedulingandholding
rehearsalsandpreparingtheactorsfortheperformance.

TechnicalDirector:YourTDwilloverseeallthetechnicalaspectsofyourshowin
accordancewiththeartisticconceptpresentedbytheDirector.TheTDwillbe
responsibleforassemblingthecrewforbuildsessionsandseeingthatalltheshows
technicalaspectsarecompletedinatimelyfashion.TheTDwillalsoensurethatthe
properpaperworkgetstotheProducerregardingtechnicalexpensesfrotheshow.
Producer:YourProducerisresponsibleforallofthefinancialaspectsoftheshow
andwillbegivenabudgettoworkwithbytheEBoardTreasurer.TheProduceris
alsoresponsibleforcreatingmarketingmaterialsfortheshow,includingtickets,
posters,flyers,andprograms.Theproducingteamisalsoresponsibleforhouse
managementduringperformances,unlessthatjobisdelegatedtoanothermember
ofthetechnicalstaff.

Themostimportantthingtorememberisthatallthreeoftheseproduction
headsareonthesamehierarchicallevel.Youareallworkingtogetherasateam
tomaketheshowasuccess;itisimportanttoremembernottosteponthetoesof
yourTDorProducer.Eachproductionheadhasadistinctjobandyoumusttrust
thatyourcoproductionheadswillfulfilltheirduties,justastheywilltrustthatyou
willfulfillyoursasDirector.
Thebeingsaid,iftherehappenstobeadisputeamongproductionheads,the
Directorhasthefinalsayintheoutcome.Ifthedisputeinvolvesprincipallythe
DirectororiftheDirectorsfinaldecisiondoesntresultinanamicableoutcome,the
disputewillbepresentedtotheEBoardforreview.TheEBoardwilldecidethe
bestoutcomeoftheconflict;theEBoardsdecisionisfinal.

AWordonCommunication
WiththeEBoard
Ifyouhaveanyquestionsorproblems,contacttheEBoard.Ifanythinggoeswrong,
evenifitseemsslight,contacttheEBoard.WeeklymeetingsoftheEBoardareheld
everySundayat6:00pm.You,yourProducer,andyourTechnicalDirectorare
requiredtoattendeverymeetingthroughthedurationofyourshowsrun.Atthese
meetingsyoumaybringupanyproblemsyouarehavingoranythingelsethatyou
needhelpwith.Remember,theEBoardsdecisionisfinal.
Withyourfellowproductionheads:
Communicate!Itistheonlywaytoguaranteesuccess.YourProducerandTechnical
Directorshouldconstantlybeinformedaboutanychanges,problems,orother
miscellaneousissuesthatariseduringtheproduction.Makesureyouexchange
contactinformationrightawayandkeepthelinesofcommunicationopen.

ImportantUniversityPolicies
UniversityClosings
IfBUcloses,StageTroupecloses.Thisincludesperformances,special
projects,oncampusrehearsals,meetingseverything.TheEBoardwilltryto
accommodateandrescheduleanycancelledevents,butiftheuniversitycloses,so
dowe.

Injuries
IntheeventofaninjurythatrequiresmedicalattentionbeyondaBandAid,
theinjurymustbereportedtotheUniversity.Ifaninjurydoesoccur,followthese
steps:

1.Calmtheinjuredpersondowntopreventfurtherinjury.
2.CalltheBUPDat6173532121andreporttheinjury.Theywillcallthe
ambulanceandtakecarefallthepaperworksoyoudonthaveto.
3.NotifytheEBoardimmediately.
4.Gobacktoyourlife.

InjuriesareaseriousmatterandmustbereportedtotheUniversity,evenif
theydontseemsveryserious.Theremaybelongtermsideeffectsofinjuriesand
theinjuredpartymaywantarecordoftreatment.TheUniversityisinsuredfor
injuriesthathappenduringnormalactivitiesandnoharmwillcometoTroupeifan
injuryoccurredduringnormalactivities.

FireAlarms
Ifafirealarmgoesoff,youronlyresponsibilityistoevacuateyourself.You
havenoobligationtoputyourselfatrisktryingtobeahero.Complywiththe
instructionsofanyonefromarenastafforthefiredepartment.

Nudity
No.Ericsruleofthumbis:Ifyoucanwalkdownthestreetwearingit,then
youcanwearitonstage.Often,thesuggestionofnudityismorepowerfulonstage
thanactualnudityinmanycases.Afterall,theaterisoftenanartofmanipulation;
useyourkeentheatricalskillstocreatetheillusionofnudity,ifitisnecessary,and
youraudiencewillbelievethatyouractorsarenaked.

FireCode
YourtechnicalDirectorwillbewellinformedaboutallofthefirecoderules.
Therearemany,theyareoftenconfusing,andtheyaresetinstone.Youdonotneed
toknowthem,butunderstandthatifyourTDoranymemberoftheEBoardsays

somethingisinviolationoffirecode,itmustbefixed.Theycanallhelpyoucomeup
withcreativealternativestoremediatetheviolation,butwhenitcomestofirecode
rules,thereisnoflexibility.TheFireMarshallisfreetoinspectthetheateratany
timetomakesureitisuptofirecode.Ifhefindsthatitisnot,hehastherightto
closeyourshow,andthatwouldbeabigdisappointmenttoyourcast,crew,andthe
restofStageTroupe.Itisinthebestinterestofallinvolvedthatyouadheretothese
rulesasbestyoucan.

TheStudentTheater
TheaterOpening/ClosingProcedure

1.Whenyouarriveatthetheater,makesureyouorsomeoneonyourstaffhas
signedinintheloglocatedintheProducersbooth.Thisservestwopurposes:It
helpsuskeeparecordofwhoiscomingandgoingfromthetheaterintheevent
ofanydamages,unlockeddoors,etc.anditalsohelpsTroupeprovetothe
Universitythatweareusingthetheateroften,sothatwecankeepitinour
charge.
2.Unlockallofthebackstagedoorssothecastandcrewhaveeasyaccesstothe
areastheyneed.Themainrightdoorscrashbarcanbeopened,butinorderto
unlocktheleftmaindoor,youmustunlockthekeyholelocatedinsidethe

Thestudenttheatercomplexconsistsofalobbyandticketingarea,two
publicrestrooms,ashowandstoragespace(designatedforStageTroupeuseonly),
a101seatprosceniumtheaterandbooth,backstagewaitingarea(greenroom),
unisexbackstagebathroom,andtwosmalldressingrooms.Althoughthehallway
continuesintothearenaspace,thedoorattheendoftheworkshopandthedoorin
thegreenroomareconsideredtomarkoffthelimitsofourtheaterspace.
Rememberthatthetheaterisasharedspace.Arenastaffhavetherightto
comethroughthegreenroomandcorridortoaccessotherpartsofthearena.Itisok
toaskthemtobequietifaperformanceisinprogress,butitisnotpermittedto
denythemaccessthroughthetheaterspace.Youmayalsohangsignsonthedoors
toinformarenastaffthatashowisinprogress.TheywillrespectTroupeifwe
respectthem.Itisimportantthatwekeeprelationswitharenastaffasamicableas
possiblewereplayingintheirhouse.

ConditionsofKeyExchanges
Youareresponsibleforyourkeys.Donotlosethem,orgivethemawayto
