To Whom it May Concern,

In response to your posting for a high school math teacher, I am submitting my application for review. I hold
a conviction that an often difficult subject like mathematics does not have to stay a barrier to student
potential, regardless of background or previous performance. I seek a school where students are empowered
through high expectations and academic rigor, but also teaches students to be citizens and explore passions
including sports and arts.

One of the greatest assets I bring to this role is my content knowledge in mathematics, and my goal to show
students that math is achievable. Many students think math is not important to the real world, and so I seek to
apply the skills they need, exploring mathematics in relevant areas. My strong math content knowledge from
Colorado School of Mines helps me to see areas in which mathematics is present in contexts of the world
today. One example from my year as a Boettcher Resident at York International School, is a project where
students chose two items to sell as a way of exploring the intersections of inequalities. We have been
working since the beginning of the year on fostering a classroom environment where mathematical
discussion takes place. This project allowed students to talk with each other, ask questions and revise their
work until they reached an optimal profit. While providing opportunities and supports to engage in
mathematical discussion, I have focused on teaching students to have a growth mindset. We watch a video
about growth mindset to start the week, and students write about the ideas presented. While we work on
problems, I model seeing mistakes as learning opportunities. As a result, students who would normally stay
silent have learned that asking questions and making mistakes are a part of the learning process, and are
more willing to contribute to class discussion.

My core strengths include fostering a learning environment where students feel comfortable taking risks and
asking questions, and reflecting to improve instruction. This past year I have worked to establish
relationships with students as they walk into class every day, and during conferring time. I have used group
roles and language modeling to teach students how to ask questions and connect and critique the ideas of
others. Students have learned to ask more specific questions and look at the process of their peers.

As a Boettcher Teacher Resident I will receive my initial teaching license with a secondary mathematics
endorsement this May. I would like to thank you in advance for taking the time to review my resume. I look
forward to an opportunity to meet with the hiring committee to explore how I can be a beneficial part of your
high school.

Sincerely,

Madison Lopp
