THE SHIELD
In 1928, John F. Victory, Executive Secretary of the
NACA, requested approval from the Secretary of
Commerce for the design of a standardized symbol for
use on the tail surfaces of the airplanes procured by the
Committee.12 The marking consisted of a shield with
red and white vertical stripes beneath a blue header upon
which the NACA number of the specific airplane was
marked in silver. The designer of the shield emblem is
unknown, but shield symbols were common for many
organizations of the day and represented strength
and unity. The proposal was approved by the Office
of the Director for Aeronautics of the Department of
Commerce and became the first systematic marking
for NACA aircraft. The type of arrangement by which
NACA aircraft were assignedpurchased, temporary,
or permanent loandictated the markings applied.

designs submitted, Victory announced that the stan-
dard NACA insignia had been selected for the pin.8
                                                                               The pin, suitable for wear by both men and women, had an overall
                                                                               length of about three-quarters of an inch and could be purchased by
                                                                               employees at the NACA laboratories and headquarters. The NACA
                                                                               insignia design was finished in red, white, and blue with the letters

                                                            An administrative item of great interest at the NACA sites occurred in 1948, when
                                                            it was decided to award meritorious service emblems to members of the NACA staff
                                                            upon completion of 20 years or more service. All of the NACA laboratories were
                                                            invited to propose designs for the pin emblem that would be symbolic of the NACA
                                                            and which will also be striking in appearance.10 Laboratory employees at Langley
                                                            and Ames contributed both serious and humorous designs to NACA Headquarters
                                                            for selection of the final design.
                                                                Two of the most talented artists employed by the NACA responded with several
                                                            ideas for designs. Julius J. Lankes, head of illustrators at Langley, was the creator
                                                            of many impressive works.11 Noted artist Harry DeVoto of Ames also contributed
                                                            several potential candidates for the service pins. DeVoto transferred to Ames from

                                                            would leave the NACA in 1950, but DeVoto remained at Ames through the estab-
                                                            lishment of NASA. DeVoto led the Ames proposals for the design of the NASA
                                                            insignia and seal in 1958, as will be discussed in a later chapter.12
                                                                One of the notable designs for the service pins was submitted by F. D. Morris of
                                                            the East Photo Lab at Langley. Morris proposed the use of the modified standard
                                                            NACA wings with the years of service indicated by number on an auxiliary tab of
                                                            some sort. His submittal apparently had a large influence on the ultimate selection.
                                                                In early 1949, a survey of the NACA staff was conducted to determine the most
                                                            desirable design submission. The service pin design selected by laboratory directors
                                                            and NACA Headquarters resembled the modified standard NACA wings emblem,
                                                            but with the numbers 15, 20, 25, or 30 added to represent years of servicean
                                                            arrangement very similar to the scheme submitted by F. D. Morris. All pins would
                                                            be gold; the 20-year pin would have a ruby stone, the 25-year pin an emerald, and
                                                            the 30-year pin a diamond.13

         The Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel complex at the

     Ames Research Center has long been a key national
     facility supporting the U.S. civil and military aero-
     space communities. Thousands of tests of almost every
     commercial and military aircraft have been conducted
     there since it began operations in 1956, and testing
     continues today. The facility was designed to have
     three test sections using only one set of drive motors.
     A turning vane/valve arrangement is used to divert the
     airflow into one test section while the other two are
     readied for another test or undergo maintenance. The
     meatball insignia had been painted in a prominent
     position on the turning vane/valve used to separate
     flow between test sections.10 This application was but
     one of many in which the old meatball was given pref-
     erence over the new worm insignia.

     insignia and, for the first time, an increased number of logos that identified part-
     ners and sponsors for research projects. Many of the paint schemes were chosen to
     enhance the visibility of the vehicle as well as airflow over and around its surfaces.

SPACE SHUTTLE
For over 30 years, NASA Space Shuttles accomplished
delivery truck missions for a variety of objectives.
The meatball insignia and the names and logos of
NASAs partners typically appeared in the cargo bay or
on the Shuttles robotic arm.
    Following the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster on 1
February 2003, NASA called on the Shuttle Discovery
for a second Return-to-Flight mission. Discovery was
launched on 26 July 2005 and delivered supplies to the
ISS, landing on 9 August at Edwards. Discovery and
its crew carried the meatball insignia on the mission.
Once again, the insignia was on stage during intense
media coverage of the event.
    When the decision was made to terminate the Space
Shuttle program in 2011 after 30 years of achieve-
ments and 135 missions, all active orbiters carried sim-
ilar markings with the meatball insignia prominently
displayed on the aft fuselage and left wing. As men-
tioned earlier, Shuttle Enterprise, a prototype vehicle,
had retained its NASA logotype markings. Museums
around the nation breathlessly awaited the outcome
of the decision that would determine where the four
vehicles would be displayed to preserve the legacy of
NASAs Shuttle activities.

      SERVICE PINS
      The meatball and the NASA seal appear on pins, medals,
      and plaques awarded for service to the Agency. A career
      service recognition award based on the meatball insignia
      is presented to all NASA civil service employees upon
      completion of 5 years of service. Certificates, emblems,
      and length of service mementos are presented at 35
      years of service and for each 5-year interval thereafter.
