2 Outline of the Sevice Manual

This Service Manual contains basic information needed to service the DADF-D1in the
field, conducted for the purpose of maintaining its product quality and a specific level of
performance.

This Service Manual consists of the following chapters:

Chapter 1 General Description, shows the features and specifications of the machine,
as well as the names of parts and how to operate it.
Chapter 2 Operations and Timing, explains the mechanical and electrical systems of
the machine by function in relation to the principles of operation and timing
at which they are driven.
Chapter 3 Mechanical Systems, shows how to disassemble/assemble the machine
and make adjustments.
Chapter 4 Maintenance and Inspection, provides tables of periodically replaced
parts and consumables/durables and a scheduled servicing chart.
Chapter 5 Troubleshooting, contains troubleshooting tables and diagrams of electrical
parts, lists of VRs, LEDs, and check pins by PCB, and an outline of self-
diagnosis.
In addition, an appendix is added to offer a general timing chart, list of sig-
nals/abbreviations, general circuit diagrams, and PCB diagrams.

The machine comes with an Installation Procedure. Refer to the instructions in the book-
let when installing the machine.

INTRODUCTION

The following rules apply throughout this document:

As a rule, the descriptions in this documentation are based on the following:
1. As needed, the work of each function and its relationship with electrical and me-
chanical parts are explained; where applicable, the timing at which associated parts
are driven are also outlined.
In a diagram, the symbol indicates a path of mechanical drive; the symbol
accompanied by a notation indicates the flow of an electrical signal.
The expression power-on means turning on the power switch, closing the front
door, and closing the delivery door so that the parts of the machine are supplied with
power.
2. In a digital circuit, the state of a signal is indicated by 1 if its voltage level is high
and by 0 if low. The level of voltage, however, differs from circuit to circuit.
The machine uses a CPU; however, since the internal functions of a CPU is outside
the scope of a service person, detailed explanations are omitted from descriptions. In
this document, a circuit diagram may cover from sensors to inputs of a controller
PCB or from outputs of a controller PCB to loads, or it may be a functional diagram.

The descriptions of the machine are subject to change for product improvement, and ma-
jor changes will be communicated in the form of Service Information bulletins.

All service persons are expected to be fully familiar with the contents of this Service
Manual and Service Information bulletins to develop a good understanding of the machine,
equipping themselves with the ability and skill to identify faults and to maintain the machine
in good order.

1 Features
a. Exclusively designed for stream reading.
The machine is exclusively designed for stream reading, and reads originals while pass-
ing them over the copyboard in all models.

b. Identifies the size of originals.

The machine is able to detect the length (feed direction) and the width of originals and
send the data to the host machine.

c. Handles double-sided originals.

The machine is equipped with a reversing function to handle double-sided originals.

d. Extra-length mode.
When extra-length mode is selected, the machine will be able to handle originals as long
as 630 mm in length.

e. Deals with sheets of different widths.

Originals of two different widths may be used.
*However, must not be of both metric- or inch-configuration sheets.

4 Operating the Machine

4.1 Original Set Indicator
The Original Set indicator turns on when an original is placed on the original tray. It
flashes when an original jam.

4.2 Warnings and Corrective Action

If the Original Set indicator flashes while an original is supposedly moving, a jam may be
suspected, requiring the following corrective action:

1) Remove all originals from the original tray.

2) Open the feeder cover, and remove any jam.
3) Put the originals back in their initial sequence, and place the stack in the machine.

4.3 Routine Maintenance by the User

Advise the user to clean the following at least once a month.

1) Open the feeder cover, and wipe the
rollers (8 in total) behind the feeder
cover with a moist cloth while rotating
the rollers; thereafter, dry wipe them
with a dry, soft cloth.
Clean the sheets around the rollers in
the same way.

2) Wipe the three rollers (3 in total; figure

on right) with a moist cloth while rotat-
ing them; thereafter, dry wipe them with
a dry, soft cloth.

3) Open the C guide, and clean the rollers
(5 in total) with a moist cloth while
turning the jam removal lever; thereaf-
ter, dry wipe them with a dry, soft cloth.

5) Close the C guide and the feeder cover;

then, open the ADF. Dry wipe the
copyboard glass with a moist cloth;
thereafter, dry wipe them with a dry,
soft cloth.

guide with a moist cloth; thereafter, dry
wipe them with a dry, soft cloth.
Then, close the ADF.

1 Basic Construction
1.1 Outline of Electrical Circuitry
The machines electrical mechanisms are controlled by the ADF controller PCB. The
CPU (IC1) on the ADF controller interprets input signals from sensors and the host ma-
chine, and generates signals to drive such DC loads as motors and solenoids at such times as
determined in advance.

2.3.2 Detecting the Presence/Absence of an Original

The presence/absence of an original on the original tray is checked by the original set sen-
sor (PI5).
When an original is placed on the original tray, the detecting lever operates in conjunction
with the light-blocking plate, which blocks the light of the photointerrupter, causing the
original set sensor (PI5) to generate the original detection signal (DTS). The ADF controller
PCB turns on the Original Set indicator in response to the original detection signal (DTS).

2.3.3 Initial Original Size Detection (feed direction)

The initial original size detection (feed direction) mechanism is executed using the large/
small identification sensor (PI3) designed to find out whether the original on the original
tray is of a small size or a large size. In addition, it serves to distinguish between LTRR and
LGL during last original size detection.
When a large-size original is placed on the original tray, the detecting lever operates in
conjunction with the light-blocking plate, which blocks the light of the photointerrupter,
causing the machine to identify the original as being of a large-size and send the result of
detection to its host machine.
The result is based on real-time detection, and is sent to the host machine at 100-msec in-
tervals.
T02-203-04 shows the mechanism used for initial original size detection.

2.3.4 Initial Original Size Detection (breadthwise)

a. Outline
The initial original size detection mechanism for the breadthwise direction of an original
is performed by the original width detecting volume (VR1) located inside the original tray.
The original width volume operates in conjunction with the slide guide, and the resis-
tance shows analog fluctuations. The ADF controller receives the fluctuations in resistance
in the form of the original size signal (WIDTH), and converts it to a breadthwise size.
The A4R/LTRR identification sensor (PI4) is used exclusively to enable the original
width detecting volume (VR1) to accurately detect the width of A4R (210 mm wide) and
LTRR (216 mm wide).
The A4R/LTRR identification sensor generates the A4R/LR identification signal (1)
when the width of an original is 197 mm or more and less than 214 mm.

If the width of an original is not any indicated in the table at power-on yet is between 140
and 297 mm, the next largest size will be selected.
For instance, if the width is a non-default width of 236 mm, the default width of 238 to
267 mm will be selected. If a non-default width is identified except at power-on, the default
width before a shift is made to a non-default width will be used.
The machine will select a default size based on the width of the original detected by ini-
tial original size detection and the length of the original, and communicates the result to
the host machine.

b. Slide Guide Positioning Roll

The rail of the slide guide is provided with a groove so that the guide may stop at any of
default size positions. The stop positions, however, are closely located for some paper
sizes, possibly stopping the guide at the wrong point.
The machine comes with two slide guide positioning rolls to enable a change of stop po-
sitions so that the slide guide may be stopped at the positions shown in the following table.

2.3.5 Last Original Size Detection

The last original size detection mechanism is executed by the post-separation sensor (S3).
The last original size detection mechanism takes place when the original is held in read
wait position. The mechanism uses the width detected by the initial original size detection
mechanism using the original width volume (VR1), and uses the post-separation sensor (S3)
to find out the length of the original.
If the original is large size, the post-separation sensor (S3) emits light in response to the
reference intensity adjustment signal (SEPAJ), and its light-receiving segment detects the
light reflected by the original, and sends the original detection signal (P-SEP) to the ADF
controller PCB.

2.3.6 Checking Originals When Printing Originals of Different Widths or in

Extra-Length Mode
When printing originals of different widths or in extra-length mode, the originals are iden-
tified as being large size or small size with reference to the state of the post-separation sen-
sor (S3) with an original held in read wait position. The detection is based solely on the
length of the original, and is executed within the feed path.

a. Post-Separation Sensor (S3) Is Off (small size)

The distance over which the original has moved is checked based on the number of
clock pulses from the feed motor (M2) between when the post-separation sensor turns off
(passage of the trailing edge) and when the original is held in wait position.

b. Post-Separation Sensor (S3) Is On (large size)

The distance of feed is detected based on the number of clock pulses from the feed mo-
tor (M2) between when the read sensor (S2) turns on and the read sensor (S2) turns off.

2.4 Original Pickup/Separation

2.4.1 Basic Sequence of Pickup Operations
When the Start key is pressed while originals are placed on the original tray, the following
takes place to pickup up the originals:

a. Pickup
The pickup motor (M1) rotates in reverse, and the pickup clutch (CL1) turns on. As a
result, the stopper and the pickup roller unit move down to rotate the pickup roller. The
separation plate and the separation pad are used to prevent double-feeding of originals.

moved to read wait position. When the original reaches read wait position, the pickup mo-

When the leading edge of an original reaches read wait position, the image leading edge
signal is sent to the host machine to start stream reading, in which the host machines scan-
ner is held in place and originals are slid over the copyboard glass for scanning. The re-

2.4.2 Pickup Unit and Stopper

The pickup unit consists of a pickup roller and a feed roller. When the Start key is pressed
or the original pickup signal is generated, the pickup motor (M1) starts to rotate in reverse,
and the pickup clutch (CL1) turns on.

the feed roller rotate to move the original. To prevent double-feeding, the separation pad and

2.5 Reversal
2.5.1 Operations
The reversal mechanism operates to turn over originals from their first side to their second
side or from their first side to their second side; these two operations are virtually identical,
and the discussions that follow are based on turning originals from their first side to their
second side.

a. Picking Up the 1st Side

The feed roller rotates using the drive of the feed motor (M2), and the 1st side is read.
To move the original, the delivery reversing roller rotates using the drive of the delivery
reversal motor (M3), and the original is moved to the delivery assembly.
The locking solenoid (SL2) turns on in reference to the end of reading operation, and the
delivery reversing roller becomes locked to let the original move.

It is indicated if the lock signal (FLCK) is generated 100 msec or more
while the cooling fan is being driven.

3 Jam
The machine uses the sensors shown in F02-301-03 to check for an original jam. The
ADF controller PCB detects a jam in relation to the presence/absence of an original over a
specific sensor at such times as stored in its ROM in advance.
When a jam is detected, the machine sends the data to its host machine in the form of a
code:
A jam occurring in the machine is indicated by the following two ways:
Host machines service mode screen
LEDs on the ADF controller PCB
Service Mode Screen of the Host Machine

'1' indicates a jam

4 Power Supply
The following figure shows an outline of the machines power supply system.
The machines power supply receives two type of 24V power (24 VP, 24 VL) from its host
machine.
The 24VP supply is mostly used for loads, and is cut off when the upper cover is opened.
If an overcurrent starts to flow into the circuit, the circuit breaker (CB1) will turn on to
cut the power supply, thereby protecting the circuit.
The 24VL supply is converted to 5V power by the IC11, and is sent to sensors and is also
used to drive the controller PCB.

1.1 Making Basic Adjustments
The machines basic adjustments must be
made in the following order:

If you have replaced any of the above sensors (S1, S2, S3), be sure to clean
the reflecting plastic sheet before making adjustments (p. 4-5).

chine in the field are discussed.

Leakage current flows in some LEDs, causing them to emit dim light when they are off.
This is a normal condition, and must be kept in mind.

5 Self Diagnosis
5.1 Outline
The CPU on the machines ADF controller PCB is equipped with a mechanism to run self
diagnosis. If it detects a fault, it will indicate the fact by the LEDs on the ADF controller
PCB, and send a code to the host machine to indicate the nature of the fault.
The data may be any of three types, and the nature of the error may be checked by refer-
ring to the Original Set indicator or the LEDs on the ADF controller PCB. Normally, LED4
flashes at intervals of 250 msec.
