Preposition Snakes and Ladders: Teachers Notes

Time: 20 minutes
Preparation: Cut up cards. Enlarge board, if possible.
Suggested Teaching Method
This game covers many of the most common preposition errors made by lower-level English learners.
Preposition areas covered include:
time (on Monday, in 1994, at Christmas etc) location (in London etc.)
this, next, last go (go shopping, go for a walk, go on vacation etc.)
once a week, twice a week etc. media (in a newspaper, on the Internet)
in a moment, at the moment listen to and more
Students should work in pairs or threes. If you have lots of students, make teams.
Give one board to each group. They also need a dice and counters.
Place all counters on the start square. The cards should be in a pile (shuffled), upside-down.
Roll the dice. Proceed forward by the number on the dice. If there is a star symbol, the other team members
should take a card, and read the sentence. The student must decide if it is correct or incorrect. If incorrect, the
student must correct the error.
If the student answers correctly, he/she can remain on the square. If the student is wrong, he/she must place the
counter back to the last position.
The next player then throws the dice, and the game continues.
If the student lands on the head of a snake, (s)he must move to the bottom of the tail.
Theres no need to answer a question.
If the student lands at the base of a ladder, (s)he can move to the top, providing the
question is answered correctly.
The first student to correctly answer the question on the final square is the winner.
If there is no star symbol on the square a student lands on, (s)he doesnt need to answer a
question.
In the event you run out of questions, the students furthest ahead are declared winners.
