Lesson3 Reflection

The teacher candidate taught a lesson on physical and chemical changes to 5th grade students. Most students were engaged in hands-on activities like mixing ketchup, though some students did not participate. The objectives were met through experimentation, but there was not enough time for the writing portion. The teacher's content knowledge supported student learning of scientific concepts through inquiry-based lessons. In the future, the teacher would allow more time for students to independently experiment by dirtying and cleaning a penny.

Lesson Reflective Summary

Teacher Candidate for Science Endorsement: Kristen Muller

Instructor: _____________________________________________________________

School: Shallowford Falls Grade: 5

Lesson Topic: Physical and Chemical Changes

Write a brief summary of your experiences teaching this lesson, addressing the following
questions:

What went well? What did not go well? (Cite specific examples)
The students were actually excited to get messy with the ketchup. I thought for
sure there would be more gross moments, but they all do play with slime. The
2 students that did not want to touch anything ended up just being with a
partner that would do all the work. The writing piece did not go well because we
ran short on time.

How well were the lessons student performance objectives attained?

The objectives were obtained well because it was hands on and the students love
seeing any project work.

Did classroom activity center on science understanding, inquiry, and sense-

making by all students?
Yes- the entire lesson has the students thinking and questioning.

Did your scientific content knowledge enable you to support students

construction of knowledge and understanding of important scientific concepts
and processes?
Yes, this is not a new lesson. We work with our STEM lab teacher to create hands
on learning to support science in our school.

When you have the opportunity to re-teach this lesson, what will you do
differently (strategies, teaching tools, assessments, etc.) to improve student
learning for all students?
Due to time constraints, I wasnt able to have students dirty the penny. We only
focused on how to clean the penny. I would make sure there was time to
research and find new ways to independently dirty their penny, and then clean it!
