Lathe Nizam

The document discusses the history and operation of lathe machines. It describes how lathes were initially developed in the 15th century as "bow" lathes and have since evolved with technological advancements. Lathes are used to shape various materials like metal, wood, and plastics by rotating the workpiece and applying cutting tools. The document also outlines the objective, apparatus, and pre-experimental procedures for using a lathe machine to machine a part, including measuring and cutting a steel rod workpiece and setting up the lathe for turning.

0 INTRODUCTION

Machine tool which spins a block of material to perform various operations such as cutting,
sanding , knurling, drilling or deformation with tools that are applied to the work piece to create an
object which has symmetry about an axis or rotation. Usually lathe is used in wood turning, metal
working, metal spinning and glass working. Lathe also can be used to shape pottery and lathe is
the best known design being the potter's wheel. The lathe rotates the workpiece at the rpm set by
the operator. The carriage feeds the cutting tool into the workpiece at a specified rate for each
revolution of the spindle.

Lathes were developed as early as the 15th century and were know as “bow” lathes. After
that , Bessons lathe in 1568 , a type of lathe that driven by a cord passing pulley above the
machine. This turn I drove two other pulleys on the same saft which rotated the workpiece.
Development and advancements have continued to make the process of turning workpiece
become more easier. Lathe machines have allowed the workers to reshape many various type of
metal, wood, plastics and other materials.

3.0 APPARATUS

 Lathe machine - used to remove metals from a workpiece to give a desired shape and
size.
 Vernier Callipers - used to measure internal and external distances accurately.
 Workpiece(Long Steel Rod) – a material that will be reshaped and resized by lathe
machine
 Cutting Tools - . Shaping up different materials and performing various functions such as
facing and turning in lathe machines.
 Horizontal Band Saw - used to cut long materials

4.0 PRE-EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURES

Figure 4.a.The workpiece was measured Figure 4.b. The workpiece was cut into pieces
by using Vernier callipers. by using horizontal band saw.

i. The long steel rod was measured for its length and width using Vernier callipers.

ii. After that, the long steel rod was placed into the horizontal band saw and cut into
pieces to get desired length.

iii. The cut rod was measured again and again for five times to get an accurate length
of desired rod

turning process of lathe machine area.

iv. The lathe machine was tested to ensure that it is safe to use when turning process.

v. After that, the rod was inserted to the chuck area to prepare our turning process.
The rod was tighten by using drawbar.
